| Thought I'd try a popular drug store brand. I didn't hate it, but it's pretty boring. Left a wierd fuzzy aftertaste in my mouth. Burned well, but my pipe was pretty goopy after. The flavour of it was very mild, hardly detectable. Smells nice.

| CB white was the first pipe tobacco I ever smelled from my friend's dad's stint with pipe smoking. When I picked up a pipe I decided to try it. It is similar to Tinderbox's Chartwell in looks and package smell, and just as good tasting. If I can't get Chartwell, I'll smoke CB White. It is particularly good from a corn cob IMHO, and has that nutty flavor I've been searching for. I don't think it is overly flavored/aromatic. All of my first pipe experiences were from bulk blends like the Tinderbox, Lane, Consolidated, O'Leary's Smoke Shop (RIP) so for "slumming it" with an OTC, I have to admit I like CB White alot more than I thought I would.

| Ah, memories! This was almost my first tobacco and I smoked this for a long time because the fine room note actually came through in the taste, though somewhat reduced in its intensity. I enjoyed the flavor scenting my beard, moustache and pipe. My wife LOVED the aroma (that got it a third star)!
Packed well, easily lit and I could usually get an hour of pleasure from it. I especially enjoyed pushing the smoke out through my nose. It wasn't gooey and left my mouth in good condition. But it was subject to inconsistency- either too wet or more commonly, too dry and stale. Almost no nicotine and light in character. Due to politics, this blend disappeared in the EU about the year 2002.
Good choice for beginners and public smoking.

| Yes,Yes,Yes...you are all correct. It is what it is.Sweet, fluffy marshmallow Easter bunnies.and yet...it is such a guilty pleasure. It carbons the tops of my aro pipes, and makes the bowls and stems a little sticky. So what! All my pipes get a good cleaning after a smoke and I enjoy shining and polishing them anyway.Sometimes I just crave the sweet stuff and this is one that I will give in to.Not everyday by any means---but sometimes the mood just strikes.I don't need a can, pouch will do---stays fresh just long enough to finish.I always have a little around---a treat for myself or to share with a friend who might like to try.

| This was my very first pipe tobacco many years ago. If sipped gently past mid-bowl, it does offer a nice taste of licorice or vanilla to my mind. Of course, the room note is very pleasant and sure to get compliments in public or from the non-smoking public in general. Someone said the Capn' Black aroma is a "Lady Magnet" and I must concur. But to be honest, Capn' Black (White) has VERY little taste to it. You could say that you can barely tell if your smoking tobacco. This is as far as you can get from a good English or Balkan blend, or a Va/Per flake. Nevertheless my mood sometimes brings me back to Capn Black (White) since its so readily available, and relatively cheap. Again, if sipped it does offer a nice taste, although very mild with no backbone or any real tobacco flavor to it at all. I don't notice any "goop", and for an aromatic it does burn to an OK fine ash. I tried cutting it 3:1 with an English blend such as GL Pease Westminster to give it some flavor, and while interesting it is by no means a vast improvement. Be sure to try it at least once, who knows, you may end up liking it a great deal. I know some smokers who do. Two and a half stars only from me. Cheers,
Update August 2010: Aromatics are known for using cheap Cavendish and Burley tobaccos as a base for the strong sugar-based casing that typifies the blend. And Capn' Black (White) is no exception. For those of you who enjoy Capn' Black (White) but want more of a tobacco taste, or perhaps more taste than that afforded by the cheap Cavendish and Burleys this is for you: Why not attempt an "Aromatic Balkan". I add in a 1:1 ratio Capn' Black to Balkan Sasieni (the 16 oz. from Cup O Joes rather than the original blend of Balkan Sasieni from Peter Stokkebye Tobaksfabrik A/S - the latter is good as is on its own). The blend from Cup O Joes approximates but does not replace the original in my opinion. Although not an aromatic smoker (I prefer English and Balkan blends almost exclusively, with a little take of Pressed Aged Virginias from McClellen or sometimes Escudo in a group 2 Dunhill), I have always had a soft spot for ol' Capn' Black (White) from my early rambling days in the high desert. I would recommend this 1:1 Capn' Black (White) : Balkan Sasieni (16 oz from Cup O Joes) to anyone, who wants the sweetness of Capn' Black (White) but also appreciates the depth of the Virginia and Orientals afforded by the Balkan Sasieni. In short, the latter replaces the bland Cavendish and Burleys background of Capn' Black. Try it yourself and let me know what you think.

| Some people bash this blend, but the smell of CBW will always hold a place in my heart. My grandfather was a navy guy, and he smoked CBW every day in his old beat up dublin. A lot of life lessons were imparted with the smell of this in the air, as well as a lot of fond memories during winter months. This tobacco burns very well for a drugstore blend, and has a roomnote that can draw women from a mile away. Burns fairly mildly, and as long as you don't push hard, won't goop your pipe. I find myself smoking this during winter, and remembering all those wonderful winter afternoons when all you can do, all you want to do, is watch the snowfall and read a good book.

| This is the only Captain Black tobacco I still indulge in after all my years as a pipe smoker. I get a craving for it once or twice a year. I smoke 6 or 7 pipefuls and am contented.
The room note will convert the worse anti-tobacco nazis out there.
It doesn't cloak and wet your pipe like CB's Blue and is enjoyable to smoke once in a while.

| I found Captain Black Regular/White to be too harsh for my tastes. It might be that this blend contains Burly, which I dislike, but I found that the flavor was too "burned" and acrid in my mouth to enjoy. I've tried several pouches over time, and they've not gotten better.

| Well, I give this review with two caveats:
1- I haven't smoked this in months, making this a less than ideal review... and...
2- I have learned I do not like black cavendish....at all. Maybe, as a condiment, I dunno, but as the main player, yech.
That said-
Not bad. Just not good. It comes off as a benign, at best, vanilla laced aro. Yes, my limited childhood experience says it's one for the ages...
However...
It smokes like all the other black cavendish dominated blends I've tried...heavy on the scent, weak on the flavour.
If, (a big if), you smoke to please the crowd, you're doing ok. But, if you smoke to enjoy the experience, this probably won't do it for you...minding the fact I know what a good cigarette, and even better cigar, can mean as far as individual sensory pleasures go.
It doesn't help it goes for $5 a pop at retailers around here. So what if I can find it easily? Most (all?) bulk (read: good) tobacco's go for less than that for an ounce 'round here. Do yourself a favor and read these pages...they can steer you right without the common BS outlay of money so many beginning pipster's are forced, obliged, to drop around here.
My .02

| I do love captain black white. The aroma is pleasant and the taste is fairly nice. It is an enjoyable smoking experience. I would recommend it as a fairly priced and tasty treat. Not bad for the all day puffer as well.

| I finally picked up a pouch of this at my local drugstore and opened it with rather low expectations.
I'm happy to say I was very pleasantly surprised - it's very hard to not like Captain Black, and I can see why it's a top seller.
It smokes very easily, is mild and smooth, and has a delicious vanilla/rum/clove/something flavor that gets better as you smoke it.
This would be the perfect introduction to the beginner pipe smoker, and I'm sure I'll be enjoying it years from now. It's nice to know that as long as there's a drugstore nearby, I'll have something consistent and satisfying tobacco to enjoy.

| ill be 100% honest...............
i used to be a big fan of CB light..............then i went on a quest for aromatics. looking for the perfect vanilla.
i came back around to trying the white! i actually found it in some ways lighter than CB light?
i highly recommend the creamy vanilla taste provide by white. no need to mention the room note.
i had recently tried other "classier" brands of pipe tobbaco, only to find my tongue scorched no matter how finicky or carefull i was. Capt. Black White has none, no matter how you punish it.
compliments a variety of drinks id imagine. coffee, etc. i have recently found that iced tea and this are wonderful in the backyard while lounging under the shade of my favorite tree.
call it a "drug store" tobac............ill take simple, tasty, and consistent!
im home.

| It is so easy to disparage the so called "Drug Store" blends and refer to them as garbage. But we all have to remember (I try!) that these reviews are only opinions and not "Truths!" In my opinion, Captain Black White is a comfortable, easy smoke. Some might say boring but I find it satisfying when... I'm in the mood for it! And that's the key, isn't it? I don't want to eat steak every night no matter how much I like it. So although the taste is not exciting, it's been around all these years for a reason - It's just right when the mood hits you.

| Not a particularly interesting tobacco. I bought some because I decided to head to a local tobacco shop instead of order some nice tobacco online for my first pipe tobacco endeavor. It is not cheaper than high quality blends, in fact it was slightly more expensive than most blends that I have since purchased online. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone as a first tobacco as it will leave a sour stain on your opinion of pipe smoking, like it did for me at first. Luckily, I discovered decent tobacco and threw away the remaining Captain Black. Garbage.

| Smoking a pipe off and on for over 40 years means one has smoked quite a bit of tobacco. I have never made a habit of smoking any of the high-priced brands or blends. Never made sense to me, because the so-called 'drug store' brands always worked just fine. I don't think I've missed anything, really. Captain Black White is one of the very best. Mild, cool, no bite, no sludge. Great stuff. Room note very nice. I would recommend it to any pipe smoker, with no reservations.

| I found this to be much better than the blue pouch and I do keep a pouch of this on hand at all times, as I find it to be a nice in-between smoke when I am out of the higher-end tobaccos. It travels well and smokes quick. I am still working on a pouch I bought almost a year ago, and it keeps getting better with age. This is definitely a working man's tobacco with almost no bite to speak of.
I smoke this in a Dr Grabow Grand Duke straight.

| Ah, my first review. Going through the drug store stuff first.
CB White is an enjoyable little smoke. Nothing complex about it, just a fairly good aro. A bit pricey compared to other drug store stuff. I pay nearly double what Carter Hall costs me. While others might claim this is only a good 'starter' tobacco I've been smoking dozens of different blends over the years and still like this stuff. Try to get the tubs if you can. The pouches tend to dry out on the shelves too easily and it changes the taste.

| Again, the Captain is over rated, a beginner's smoke, thats all. You can get better quality with "Smokers Pride, BC", real good inexpensive bc, without the toxic goop. Why do I say somewhat recommende?, How else will the new pipe smoker learn if not by trial and err, what and how could he compare and discern with.
