Sometimes, under an impulse I cannot explain, I choose to smoke an aromatic tobacco from a blender other than C&D. And, nearly always after these incidents, I find myself asking, ?Why did I bother?? Plum Duff is unusual for C&D in some ways, but still clearly demonstrates the proper way to make an aromatic blend, the method that so few blenders choose to follow. The aroma of this blend is sweet, fruity, rich and slightly musty, with an almost ?liquor-like? undertone. I suppose that I smell plum, but I don?t know that I would have guessed so without knowing the blend?s name. The leaf is ragged and varied in cut, ranging from smallish fragments to large chunks, all of an unvaried, totally dark black hue. The moisture level is high, almost sticky; something almost unheard of in a C&D blend. It will need to dry for at least ½ hour before smoking. It dries quickly, however, and the moisture appears to be water, rather than the ?chemical? hydration used with many other aromatics. Packing is easy except for the large chunks, which need to be broken or torn first. It lights easily, even when partially wet, and burns with about the average number of relights required. For the first third of the bowl, the flavor is sweet, a darkly fruity/vanilla taste that is not overwhelming. This rides on a dark, mild tobacco base that is readily apparent in the smoke. It is smooth and totally bite-free, and very pleasant to exhale through the nose. The second third is still sweet but somewhat less fruity; I cannot tell that there is plum in the tobacco. The tobacco base is still dark and mild, producing a smooth and nonbiting smoke. There is some moisture at this point, but no more than a single pipe cleaner can handle. The room aroma is very nice to non-smokers. In the final part of the bowl, the flavor has become a bit less sweet, while the fruity note is almost totally gone. The underlying dark Cavendish flavor is strongest at this point, still smooth and mild. There is a bit more moisture toward the end, but the bottom of the bowl is remarkably dry for an aromatic blend. Overall, this is a very decent aromatic tobacco. While far from complex or full, the sweetness and mild smoothness makes a refreshing change of pace for me. I would gladly recommend this to anyone who enjoys aromatics, even if only occasionally, as it is free of the majority of the cheaper alternatives? problems. A high quality blend, as expected from C&D.
