Samuel Gawith Pure Louisiana Perique

(3.00)
Pure high quality ribbon cut Louisiana Perique. 100% Perique aged and fermented in hickory whiskey barrels for five years which gives it a fruity, slightly vinegary aroma. Cultivated by farmer Percy Martin in Louisiana it is considered the truffle of tobaccos. Predominately used for blending you would need to be brave to smoke it on its own!

Actually smelled great out of the bag. Had some age on it so it was a bit dry. Light up was fine and aroma was pretty good. Taste was not bad but weak at the beginning. As I went through the bowl the flavor got a little stronger. Got a pepper rush about halfway through the bowl and again near the end of the smoke. Yes I know this is to mix but I wanted to try straight! You will get a nicotine rush as well. I doubt if I will buy again unless I use for mixing. I will say the room note was outstanding. Just could not pull out the flavor I wanted except pepper rushes. Will use remainder for mixing.

On its own, it's smokable but to keep it enjoyable one needs some precautions. First a small pipe for a short smoke no more than 20 minutes, then slow puffing is required. The taste is earthy/musty and peppery for the most part, it's also surprisingly creamy and slow burning. I'm pretty sure that if smoked longer, the nicotine level skyrockets and becomes disagreeable.

As a mixer, this is where it really shines, 10% and more and you will find the flavor profile above, around 5% and you will make your Virginias sing another tune. It will increase the nicotine level slightly but also the dry fruit aspect, you know... what we call figs, prunes, raisins.

So I highly recommend this tobacco as a mixer first but also on its own, in the right state of mind, especially for Burley, Semois and Brun smokers.

Samuel Gawith-Pure Louisiana Perique. If you have a blend to hand that you want to give a bit of 'oomph' to then add a pinch or two of this to it and that should do the job!

This comes in a loose pouch but sadly my expectations of the loose packaging allowing it space to breathe and dry off didn't come to fruition. Okay, it was only a little too damp but considering this has sat in the pouch un-touched for two months it must have been properly saturated at first.

This should have a warning on it saying "caution, don't smoke this neat. Only add to other blends". It's smokeable neat but way to strong. Strong in both nicotine and spiciness.

This burns too hot to smoke on its own. The pipe gets warm in the fingers quickly.

On the plus side although it burns hot it doesn't bite too much!

This is tricky to grade. When it's smoked neat it gets one star but for adding character to a blend it would be worth three stars.

I think as an overall mark two stars is about right!

Recommended.
