Dark and full-bodied without harshness. Great for outdoor smoking. Many strong mixtures are harsh and stringent; Accountants Mixture is truly an outstanding exception.

I thought I would give this a try since I've read a lot about it.

It is a standard English blend of Virginias and Latakia. This has a rich leathery scent in the tin with a Virginia piquancy, ie, with a slight fermented smell. The Latakia seems to blend well with the Virginias and doesn't dominate.

Packing is easy, but lighting up takes a little more time than I like. The moisture is a tad higher in the tin than I would like, but isn't bad. I punched a small hole in the plastic top to let it breathe over time and the tobacco has dried a bit more to my liking. Just right.

The flavor is pleasant and full with a slight Virginia sweetness showing through. The Latakia is more layed back in this mixture and blends more evenly with the Virginas. Nice change.

As the description states, is is very nice smoked outdoors, but also gives a very pleasant English room aroma indoors that I always find comforting.

My only two real complaints about this blend is that it can smoke a bit hot for me due to the Virginia component, and it at times is a little strong in the nicotine level. But, that's just me. I tend to smoke a little fast at times.

Good blend for a change of pace and for anyone who wants a little less Latakia in their English blends.

A perfectly named tobacco - not exciting but reliable ,sober, conservative and dependable as a good accountant. I really like this. Full and clean . Some may feel this is a bit monotone but I find this a perfect tobacco to puff away on when engaged in other activities and as the tin notes state it is an excellent outdoor smoke. A very good winter smoke - I find this a bit too full on for warm days. Excellent quality base tobaccos in one of Rattray's most underrated blends. 8 out of 10 . A tobacco I wouldnt horde but will keep in stock and come back to.

Accountants Mix . This seems to get a mixed reaction , because of that I was really eager to form my own opinion ! I find it very enjoyable , it is of a great moisture amount making for very easy igniting and a supremely steady and even burn that requires not many re-lights . The smoke flavour is of a very pleasant balance as it is predominately Virginia with a nice subtle sweetness from the Cavendish and a delicate "lively" hit from the Latakia but it isn't too heavy with the smokey Latakia flavour that you get with some Latakia mixes . The smoke is not too hot and quite forgiving with Tongue Bite , unless you strain it too hard . Nicotine level is good as it is not too strong nor light and if you choose to inhale the smoke it causes no hurt . Room note is quite standard for the Tobaccos used but still nice and not too heavy . In all its very suited to my tastes !

Unlike Professional which I sampled in the old days and found unmemorable, this is one I smoked more than a little of back then. Either it has suffered over the years or my tastes have changed. It's probably both.

This is now a fairly mild tobacco when it used to be rich. As I recall, it was closer to Black Mallory but sweeter and less spicy. I would not call this a "Full" mixture any longer. As with Professional, I just don't see where it fits into the Rattray line any longer. At any rate, this is still a slightly sweet blend with a bit more latakia than Prof, but it still suffers from an identity crisis. This was smoked on occasion over a 6 month period and I kept waiting for more "action" from it, as it used to provide. Now it just seems tired and confused. Again, this is one that could satisfy an all-day smokers need to puff, but little else. If you want to get a taste of how Rattrays used to be, avoid this one and go with Red Rapparee, Black Mallory, Jocks or Highland Targe.

The Virginias are grassy/hay-like with a touch of earthiness, and slight sweetness. The unsweetened cavendish provides most of what sweetness the blend does have, but I didn't think it did that much for it. The latakia has a light sweetness with a little smokey quality, and provides most of the strength of the product. I thought it kind of monochromatic in flavor though my review doesn't read that way. I smoked what I bought, and left it at that. There are a number of English mixture with more complexity, providing greater interest to the experienced smoker.

This was recommended to me while I was out of town and without my stash of favorites. I had packed them in a bag and forgotten them...such is life. Anyway, the tobacconist that I found in a smallish midwestern town did not keep a large inventory and I was unfamiliar with alot of his stock. The stuff I did recognize was not to my taste. After asking for something full and english, he pointed Accountants out to me. I have been a fan of several Rattrays blends for years and thought 'what the hell'.

I could not have been more disappointed. This was not full and certainly not english. I failed to taste latakia at all. This was a blend of light to medium bodied virginias. I believe that there is latakia in here, just not enough to taste. The entire experience was one of monochromatic dullness. I now know why this would be of interest to accountants! After much effort at trying to coax some subtle play of flavors out of this blend, I gave up and packed away the balance to take back to my cellar. I ended up borrowing some tobacco from a kind gentleman that I met at the hotel bar. Don't know what it was, but it fit the bill nicely. I owe that man more than the couple of drinks that I ended up buying him.

Bottomline: Low nicotine, low flavor, low interest. Meh! I will find someone to give the balance of the tin to. It shouldn't be hard as there are alot of mild blend smokers out there. Cheers!

I've just finished my first tin of Accountants Mixture and found it to be a very pleasing smoke. I was surprised to find it contained Cavendish tobacco as I don't detect any of the sweetness you ususally get with all the Cavendish tobaccos I've tried so far. I particularly like the subtle use of Latakia, it's not so overwhelming as you get in some other blends. It reminds me of Dunhills' Early Morning Pipe tobacco as that blend uses a subtle amount of Latakia. I've really taken to this blend and will buy more. I fing Rattrays to be fine tobaccos and would recomend them all (at least the ones I've tried). I can't think of anything bad to say about this blend except the wife hates the smell and wont let me smoke it anywhere near her. This is now one of my favouites and I'd put it in my top three. I like strong tobacco and this has the flavour of a strong tobacco with out being too much. I could happily smoke this all day. Highly recommended.

A Latakia mixture dominated by VA and Cavendish. Nice ribbon cut, which makes for easy stuffing. The tin design may be a little on the bland side, but I do find the contents to be elegant enough.

The tin aroma shows off the Latakia readily enough, but the BC and VA are also noticeable. I find myself reminded of Poul Ilsted's Own Mixture #88, minus the topping, and that makes for a very favourable comparison IMHO. The cut is a long ribbon, which handles and stuffs easily. Takes to the match readily, needs to be smoked somewhat slowly (because the ribbons are somewhat thin), but even so has a beautiful, sweet&toasty taste.

The room note, of course, is a solipsist experience; I like it, nobody else does, women in general hate it (that's as of the returns of my 10-people survey with this 'baccy over the last month). The taste has a note of good leather, a nice acidity, a goodly amount of sweetness, and of course the Latakia toast in it.

This is not one for the Latakia junkies; it'll be far too "weak" for them, and probably too sweet. This blend does fit my need for Latakia while still being gentle and sweet enough for everyday consumption. The strength is not much; it could be an all-day tobacco. Overall, I could compare this blend to Bull Dog Little Dandy, which is similar in characteristic (but a tad sweeter while being just as toasty) and the already-stated Ilsted's blend; it fits right in and is well worth smoking.

According to Kohlhase & Kopp's website, we are in presence of black cavendish, virginia and latakia varieties solely. Yes, this corresponds to a Scottish blend.

If you are looking for a strong latakia taste, you will probably be disappointed with this mixture. What is dominant the first weeks that the tin is opened is the sweetness of the virginias and black cavendish. The latakia is a background player. After those first weeks the Virginia will dominate with the Latakia as runner-up, supplemented by the blcak cavendish.

Not a very complex mixture but still of high quality. Yes it is probably suited for outdoors smoking because it does not require a lot of attention.

Accountant's Mixture is a good start for someone who wishes to gain exposure to the light english blend.

Great smoke when you want to change things up some. I couldn't smoke this all day, just because I like to smoke in a rotation. But this is a great smoke if your going to sit outside and gaze up at the stars or have a really good conversation with a good friend or a lover. A little bit of tong bite if you get it too hot (but that's more an individual experience - what one person experiences another may not). Defiantly worth a try if you like Latakia. So far from my own experience my palate tends to like more Virginia and especially Latakia heavy blends. I used to smoke cigarettes for 20 years, then changed to cigars for about half year, and then to pipes. The latakia has a little bit of a spicy taste to wake up your palate yet it's sweet enough at the same time not to overpower the palate.

Rattray's Accountant's Mixture (RAM) is the English blend I almost invariably reach for when I cannot stand any surprises after a long day if I am in the mood for Latakia, or when I do not want anything overly finicky at work (yes I still can smoke at the office). RAM substitues oriental tobaccos with unsweetened Cavendish, which makes it a 'Scottish' blend if you are into classifications like that. It has just the mix of smokiness, sweetness and spicyness that I like. Anyway, it tastes good, burns clean and dry and is still complex enough to keep the palate interested. A plain good honest Latakia blend that I really learned to appreciate after the second tin.

It's hard to believe that the same company that makes such high quality blends like Red Rapparee, Marlin Flake and Old Gowrie produces such bland, boring blends like Accountants, Professional and 7 Reserve. Is this a bad tobacco? No, it looks good, packs well and behaves in the pipe. Accountants suffers from the same issues as the others mentioned above. There are some subtle tastes to be found if smoked slowly, but for me not memorable enough to buy more.

The aroma in the tin is soft and subtle. Latakia and Dark Virginia scents are thoroughly married, each noticeable but melded into a cohesive whole. The balance swings towards the Latakia, and the whole mixture smells sweet and smoky. Leather, brown sugar and caramel (almost burnt sugar), and even buttermilk notes haunt the edges of the mild, delicate aroma.

Packs well, lights easy.

Dark Virginia leaf provides a warm sweetness, Latakia is much lighter than I expected. Old leather, hay lofts, coffee, and a nice light smoky flavor, hover on the edge of perception in the fog of Virginia and Latakia. No serious complexity here, just pleasant and consistent smoking.

Toasty and sweet, softly smoky. What's not to like? I agree with the reviewer who said that this stuff is good to smoke when you're working or busy doing something, it doesn't require much attention to enjoy the simple pleasures of Accountant's Mixture.

A nice tobacco, where the Latakia is a minority and not really detectable. The key players are the Black CA and VAs. This would be what I could call a "light Scottish" blend.

It is a dark mixture which, surprisingly, can generate some tongue bite if pushed not too hard. The tin aroma is the sweetness of the Black CA.

The main flavors are the sweetness of the CA and the grassiness of the VA. The more I smoke Am, the more I am convinced that the latakia is less than 5% of the mixture.

Recommended for those who would like to venture into more natural blends or seeking a starting point in English blends where the Latakia is quasi symbolic.

Review is based on a 2002 tin, opened November 2009.

By my definitions, this is a Scottish blend -- meaning it contains VAs, latakia, and black cavendish. And I don't think anyone does this kind of blend better than Rattray's.

A rich, supple smoke that is, as the tin says, "full," with a somewhat higher measure of nicotine than I typically smoke. (Not unbearable by any means. More than Black Mallory, but probably less than Hal o' the Wynd.)

I enjoy this one, but if I were picking a Rattray's Scottish for all-day smoking, this one comes in a bit rich. Black Mallory would be a better choice for that -- and also for a first foray into Rattray's Scottish blends -- as would Jocks Mixture, although Jocks is a somewhat different type of blend.

For several rich and satisfying bowls a day. . . well, Accountants' ticks all the right boxes.

A lot of folks like this tobacco, and I myself was lured in by the Sirens song of the reviews. But I really can't quite see what's special here. To me it was very unremarkable, especially when you consider the cost. I'll have to go back to it on a festive occasion and see if a more celebratory mood will bring something out that otherwise remains hidden. At the same time, I'd hate to ruin Christmas for everybody (I'd never live that down). I'll try it again and update.

I cannot understand whay it burns so hot. All the reviewers seem to disagree on this point and, afterall, there is no accounting for taste. I have to state that I do not have a sensitive toung. I like all kinds of tobacco but tend towards "natural or English" blends. One of my all time favorites is GL Pease's Cumberland. Considered by many to be a toung burner.

The smell in the tin of all Ratray blens is sublime. The taste, on the other hand tends to be lacking and did I mention hot!!!

If this qualifies as Scottish tobacco, I like it. Very much so. It is in my top 5 all time. Accountants Mixture is an odd name for such a rich blend. The tin I bought looked like it had been on the shelf for years. Very dusty, and the label was faded. It was the first Rattray blend I have tried. Opening the pop-off tin, I was treated to a dark mixture and a wonderful rich, heavy Latakia, and peaty smell. It was a little dry, but it burned perfectly. I cannot compare it to any other blend, because it tasted different than any I've every smoked. Like many others, I will also say it did have a citrusy, astringent taste. I really love strong English blend and have smoke many. This one is right up there. It is not a silky smooth one and for me it was in the last 1/3 of the can when I really started to appreciate the " different flavor. This review is as scattered as I, and it may not help anyone, but AM has a good, strong latakia and matured Va. flavor, with a good nic kick, and I strongly recommend it, if you want something different in the English blends.

For me, it does not equal British Woods as to depth of flavor but it perhaps surpasses BW in the daily use arena. Lights easily, smokes the same top to bottom and puts the "D" in dependable. A can is always on the shelf.

However, I wish it had a better name. Good blend for a new English smoker to try...and stay with.

I have to join the chorus and agree that this is a pretty unremarkable English blend of moderately sweet Virginias and Latakia. The Latakia presence is quite mild. The cut of the leaf is fine enough to allow for easy (almost quick) burning. The stuff doesn't bite. It's as mild mannered as the stereotype of the accountant suggests.

And I like it. Most of the people in my life are also mild mannered and unremarkable, and so this stuff fits right in.

Currently working on my second tin of this mixture, I must say I am very pleased with it.

Closer to the typical Scottish blend, because of the addition of a significant portion of rubbed-out black VA flake, this good, honest blend features rubbed-out VA flake,Latakia, a small presence of oriental leaf and the addition of, I suspect, some cavendish. To the nose, it definitely is latakia, black VA and VA.

The room note remains pleasant despite the fair amount of Latakia and the sweet, discreet undertone brought by the black VA makes this blend flavorful and tasty while managing to avoid the border of the overwhelming.

I can understand why most of the reviewers are disappointed because they were expecting a full english blend , as advertised on the tin, rather than a scottish.

But this is what I enjoy from the scottish: the black VA reduces the sometimes harsh aftertaste of the Latakia , consequently reducing the bolder taste that it produces.

Of pleasant note, the black VA will settle down past mid -bowl to let the Latakia take a more prominent place with the VA, making it a more robust, traditionnal english blend, which is perfectly welcomed!

The description of this blend is rather ambiguous. It is, however, correct. It is dark and full-bodied. It does seem to lack harshness. It leans toward the darker, virginia flaavors. It has sweetness, zestiness, and richness. The latakia adds a leathery smokiness. Other orientals, if present, are not evident. I expected a powerful, dark, balkan type tobacco. I was surprised, but surprisingly so. This is an excellent tobacco. It achieves what McClelland's seems to strive for, but often fails to accomplish.

This is another one of the three Rattray's offerings in my regular rotation. I believe this to be similar to Professinal Mixture with more strength and a touch more Latakia and unsweetened Black Cavendish.

Again, this delivers a wonderful flavor and pleasant room note rather than the some of the other English styled blends that can be rather astringent. While it does do well outdoors, I confidently reach for Accountant's after a meal and reserve other more rustic coarsley cut blends for outdoor duty.

Accoutant's delivers subtle complexity in a narrower range and my experience is that 90% of the bowl hums a beautiful melody all its own, and for me ... that's the attraction. It's very reliable and consistently excellent quality. It always holds my attention.

This blend, Professinal Mixture and Jocks Blend are the Rattray's trilogy in my rotation. Excellent!

I could imagine that the Accountant's Mixture might be irritating to a majority of smokers, given that one is not presented at all what is expected, considering the way this tobacco is usually described. We are told on the tin that it is a full tobacco and other sources mention that it contains Latakia as well as a goodly portion of black cavendish and Orientals. It sounds like a heady, brooding blend, perhaps with a little cavendish thrown in to keep the furies at bay, the sort of thing one would expect from a company that had its start as one of Scotland's primary tobacco blenders.

This is not the case, not even a little bit. Accountant's Mixture is an interesting foray into the black cavendish aromatic, but with a distinctly English feel. The base is of some good, sweet Virginias, seemingly red and stoved. The next greatest component is the black cavendish. These two pretty much comprise what the blend will taste like. Whatever Latakia or Orientals there may be, why would I have been lied to all of these years, after all, don't seem to do much but make the flavour come through a bit grassy at times. The tobacco is indeed a full one, but it is fundamentally a sweet fullness, not the English or Balkan understanding of the term that proliferates nowadays. Very much like port, in fact and with burnt caramel hints on occasion as well.

The flavour combination of Virginias and black cavendish is an enjoyable one, to my mind, and not often encountered. I imagine that Accountant's was just as much a novelty when it was firs blended in those halcyon days of yesteryear as it is today, but I can still concede that there are a great many smokers that will have no patience for the effect.

This isn't a typical Virginia/Latakia English style blend. The base of this tobacco is a matured, naturally sweet virginia. It also contains unsweetended black leaf. I'm not sure if that is cavenish, stoved virginia or both, but it is dark blend. The latakia in this tobacco is pleasant but it doesn't stand out, and that is what makes it so unique. The blend tastes mostly of matured virginia with a touch of smokiness from the latakia. I like most of Rattray's blends but like the rest of their line, this is not smokable directly out of the tin. I dry this and all my tinned tobaccos for about 30 minutes before smoking, else it will smoke too hot. I'd love to try the bulk version to see if there is a difference. I love the default moisture level and the ribbon-cut. I find it to pack well.

Often (in the mornings) I'm usually either in the mood for a straight virginia, burley or a lighter English. I progress towards Balkan blends at night.

This tobacco perfectly fits my mid-morning bowl; 2nd cup of coffee and AM.

Good, steady taste.

While smoking I am reminded of an undead skeleton in rusted armor. Unable to move yet content to be in full, proper regalia.

Great blend of Virginias and Latakia, in a chunky cut. Kind of in the same family for me as Lancer's Slices or Commonwealth, but with more sweetness and less assertive Latakia. Still has a great leathery punch to it. Complex it is not, but is enjoyable. This has mostly been a deep winter smoke for me.

While lighter than 3 Noggins and heavier than Jocks, it is just as disappointing. After smoking Marlin Flake and Old Gowrie I can't believe Rattray would allow this to be sold with their name on it. Of course this is a perfect example of how shit in a tin will sell with the right name on it.

This is my first go at any of the Rattray tobaccos. I do believe the term "full" may be misleading. The tobacco has a range of color from dark to tan, and the aroma from the tin says English from the first. I find the ribbon cut harder for me to pack and so did some chopping right away.

As to the smoke, well this will never be a full time tobacco for me but I don't dislike it. One feature I found was that it seemed to be very consistant from the first of the bowl to last. I never detected much of a change as the bowl burned down, this I like in some respects.

Bottom line here is this will never be a favorite of mine, but I will keep some on the shelf.

Like many other Rattray EMs, this is as dull and boring as anything you can imagine. A grey taste, with very little variations or pleasant notes. A bit lighter than 3 Noggins, and a bit heavier than Jocks (but less bitey)... and almost just as disappointing!

A friend of mine who is an accountant bought a tin of this mixture, primarily for the name, and gave me a generous sample of it. When you first open the tin, you?ll think you?re in for a real treat. It has a wonderful, all-natural aroma with a slight sweetness and perhaps the scent of raisins. It is lovely in appearance, with beautiful Virginias in the blend, some of which almost appear to be rubbed out flake. The moisture level is good, though care should be taken when packing, as I found it easy to pack this too tightly.

Once under fire, however, this blend doesn?t live up to the expectations created by its tin presence. It is a pleasant though, in the end, unremarkable smoke. For me this rather bland mix falls into the ?decent smoke? category; nothing unpleasant about the smoking experience, but nothing particularly memorable about it either.

It is aptly named. Not because accountants are bland and boring, but because it?s a good mix to smoke when you?re toiling away crunching numbers or some other such task that takes your attention away from the flavor and nuances of the tobacco you are smoking. The blend for a late-night, contemplative smoke this is not.

Accountant?s Mixture is my first exposure to Rattrray?s.

I find AM to be a well-balanced smoke. Not overly potent, something I might have with my morning coffee. It could serve as an all-day smoke as well. Not overly complex, yet not one-dimensional either.

Accountant?s was very well behaved in the pipe, nice and cool. It burned well, and left a fine ash with very little dottle. It isn?t harsh, but there is that hint of an edge from time to time.

The description says it?s great for outdoor smoking, but I have to disagree. I found that being outside, the flavor just didn?t hold its own. Unless you aren?t able to smoke Latakia in the house, you?re better off staying inside with this one.

Accountant?s Mixture isn?t a blend that will take over the world, but it is worth a try. Like the stereotypical ?accountant? as portrayed on TV and in movies; it is reserved, predictable, and unlikely to do anything to really surprise you.

What makes this blend stand out from the rest of the medium english pack is the typical Rattray aroma. This blend smells and tastes to me as though someone took a can of Marlin Flake and added some Latakia and a tiny amount of other orientals. The smell out of the tin is really something for an english blend, but the blend itself is very run of the mill. I prefer Marlin Flake when I want this quality of Virginia. And when I want a good English I will look for it elsewhere as well. A quality blend with high grade leaf, it just doesn't quite do it for me. Typical high quality Rattray fare however.

When I bought a tin of this I recieved the look you usually get when asking for Bolivar Cigars or staight Latakia . "Watch it this is strong stuff". Well I headed home and sure enough the contents looked black and broading. A Full Tobacco Warned the can.

Well Yes its true this is a full on tobacco loaded with the latakia, but somehow this one failed to light my wick. Whats the point in being strong if its not complex. This tobacco did not work on the levels that the best can do and quite frankly getting through 100g of this stuff might prove to be a bit of a chore.

Rattrays Accountants Mixture. My fondest memories of my early days of pipe smoking immediately conjure up having some of this blend in my Peterson. It was heaven. I stopped smoking a pipe for quite a few years and have only recently picked up a pipe again, about 3 years ago. When I did I immediately went out to purchase some Rattrays Accountants Mixture. My tobacconist warned me and said that Rattrays is owned by a different company now and this blend is not as good as it used to be. Boy was he right. This is not the same blend. It is a middle of the road English blend. Nothing outstanding about it. I do not plan on buying another tin of this. It is not a bad blend but just nothing like I can remember. I would rather keep my memories of this blend. 3 stars.

Rattray's Accountants Mixture was one of my occasional blends over the years. I might buy a 4 oz can every couple of years or so, just to have a little different flavor. I recently bought another can and was most disappointed by it. Either now that this is being made by Cohlhacs and Kopp in Germany they have changed the way it is made or my taste buds are different. To me, it is now just another unremarkable latakia blend. There is nothing wrong with it, it simply is just now a rather strong latakia blend and no longer has a distictive flavor.

Quite stinky on opening the can (how do they create that rotten ketchup odor?)and so I was expecting the worst.

Surprise! Took it for an outdoor walk on Thanksgiving and it smoked great. No tongue bite, nice flavor. Had a tight pack in a nice deep bent Urbino, and I had no trouble keping it lit. (For me a minor miracle).Even in the house it was something the kids didn't run from.

So while not the best thing you will ever smoke it is for me a nice non-offensive diversion without being too bland.

Not as dark as the decription would lead you to believe, but a good deal of dark leaf. The aroma was a nice balance of Va., Turkish and Latakia. The flavor was, as expected, nicely balanced and tasty, but not as full bodied as the description. All told, a nce enough blend, but not exceptional to my palate.

An overall good tobacco, not one that would be compared to be the strongest. I of course expected this, but I was somewhat dissapointed. I would compare this to Dunhill's London Medium. or Estorica's Margate. A well blended tobacco, a good helping of Latakia, probably Cyprian, and Turkish, not to mention Virginia's, and some Orientals. I would not be worried about smoking this one in the house, unless smoking is not allowed. My rating; a 6, in a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best.
