Rattray Accountant's Mixture

(2.79)
Dark and full-bodied without harshness. Great for outdoor smoking. Many strong mixtures are harsh and stringent; Accountants Mixture is truly an outstanding exception.

The earthy, woody, musty Cyprian Latakia has a light sweetness with a little smokey quality, and provides most of the potency of the product. The Virginias are grassy/hay-like with a touch of earth, wood, slight tart and tangy citrus along with a little tangy dark fruit as secondary players. The unsweetened black cavendish provides a light touch of sugar. The strength and taste levels are medium. The nic-hit is just past the center of mild to medium. Won't bite or get harsh, but sports a few small rough edges. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with a fairly consistent, mildly sweet and more savory flavor. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a pleasantly lingering after taste, and stronger room note. Not quite an all day smoke, but it is repeatable. Two and a half stars.

Unlike Professional which I sampled in the old days and found unmemorable, this is one I smoked more than a little of back then. Either it has suffered over the years or my tastes have changed. It's probably both.

This is now a fairly mild tobacco when it used to be rich. As I recall, it was closer to Black Mallory but sweeter and less spicy. I would not call this a "Full" mixture any longer. As with Professional, I just don't see where it fits into the Rattray line any longer. At any rate, this is still a slightly sweet blend with a bit more latakia than Prof, but it still suffers from an identity crisis. This was smoked on occasion over a 6 month period and I kept waiting for more "action" from it, as it used to provide. Now it just seems tired and confused. Again, this is one that could satisfy an all-day smokers need to puff, but little else. If you want to get a taste of how Rattrays used to be, avoid this one and go with Red Rapparee, Black Mallory, Jocks or Highland Targe.

Accountants Mixture.

This seems to get a mixed reaction, because of that I was really eager to form my own opinion! I find it very enjoyable, it's of a great moisture amount making for very easy igniting and a supremely steady and even burn that requires not many re-lights. The smoke flavour is of a very pleasant balance as it is predominately Virginia with a nice subtle sweetness from the Cavendish and a delicate lively hit from the Latakia but it isn't too heavy with the smoky Latakia flavour that you get with some Latakia mixes. The smoke is not too hot and quite forgiving with tongue bite, unless you strain it too hard. Nicotine level is good as it is not too strong nor light and if you choose to inhale the smoke it causes no hurt. Room note is quite standard for the tobaccos used but still nice and not too heavy.

In all its very suited to my tastes!

A perfectly named tobacco - not exciting but reliable ,sober, conservative and dependable as a good accountant. I really like this. Full and clean . Some may feel this is a bit monotone but I find this a perfect tobacco to puff away on when engaged in other activities and as the tin notes state it is an excellent outdoor smoke. A very good winter smoke - I find this a bit too full on for warm days. Excellent quality base tobaccos in one of Rattray's most underrated blends. 8 out of 10 . A tobacco I wouldnt horde but will keep in stock and come back to.

Rich, creamy and full of flavor that washes over the palate in waves. The Virginia is deep and rich, the Latakia nice and smoky in the background and the Orientals tantalize the tongue. One of my favorites in a line-up of already outstanding offerings from Rattray's.

I thought I would give this a try since I've read a lot about it.

It is a standard English blend of Virginias and Latakia. This has a rich leathery scent in the tin with a Virginia piquancy, ie, with a slight fermented smell. The Latakia seems to blend well with the Virginias and doesn't dominate.

Packing is easy, but lighting up takes a little more time than I like. The moisture is a tad higher in the tin than I would like, but isn't bad. I punched a small hole in the plastic top to let it breathe over time and the tobacco has dried a bit more to my liking. Just right.

The flavor is pleasant and full with a slight Virginia sweetness showing through. The Latakia is more layed back in this mixture and blends more evenly with the Virginas. Nice change.

As the description states, is is very nice smoked outdoors, but also gives a very pleasant English room aroma indoors that I always find comforting.

My only two real complaints about this blend is that it can smoke a bit hot for me due to the Virginia component, and it at times is a little strong in the nicotine level. But, that's just me. I tend to smoke a little fast at times.

Good blend for a change of pace and for anyone who wants a little less Latakia in their English blends.

As with Professional Mixture, this was also a surprise to me. I am normally a confirmed latakiaphile, and haven't enjoyed either Marlin or Hal o' the Wynd, so I wondered how I would get on with a blend that is purported to be Virginia-heavy. For me, the proportions of virginias against cavendish and orientals (including latakia) combine wonderfully to make a balanced, sweet and sufficiently complex mixture that is really satisfying. Similar to Accountant's Mixture, this could easily be an all day smoke which burns well to the bottom of the bowl, leaving no waste. The different component tobaccos dip in and out throughout the bowl, with a sweet and pleasant room note. My only complaint is that after an hour, it is gone.

I am starting to think that Rattray can do nothing wrong as long as they remember to add latakia. Slow and easy, tasty and something of a revelation. Highly recommended to those who want a gentle latakia blend with sweet virginias.

This was recommended to me while I was out of town and without my stash of favorites. I had packed them in a bag and forgotten them...such is life. Anyway, the tobacconist that I found in a smallish midwestern town did not keep a large inventory and I was unfamiliar with alot of his stock. The stuff I did recognize was not to my taste. After asking for something full and english, he pointed Accountants out to me. I have been a fan of several Rattrays blends for years and thought 'what the hell'.

I could not have been more disappointed. This was not full and certainly not english. I failed to taste latakia at all. This was a blend of light to medium bodied virginias. I believe that there is latakia in here, just not enough to taste. The entire experience was one of monochromatic dullness. I now know why this would be of interest to accountants! After much effort at trying to coax some subtle play of flavors out of this blend, I gave up and packed away the balance to take back to my cellar. I ended up borrowing some tobacco from a kind gentleman that I met at the hotel bar. Don't know what it was, but it fit the bill nicely. I owe that man more than the couple of drinks that I ended up buying him.

Bottomline: Low nicotine, low flavor, low interest. Meh! I will find someone to give the balance of the tin to. It shouldn't be hard as there are alot of mild blend smokers out there. Cheers!

A nice english, but reminds me more of a lighter Balkan in profile. Each tobacco comes through and is recognizable. The flavors do play nicely with each other, virginias tending to be more forward and latakia taking a background supportive role. Reminds me of a lighter BlackHouse by Russell Oulette Wouldn't consider this a true full English as I smoke it, simply not campfire like enough. Smoke and Sip slowly, this tends to get slightly hot but is extremely manageable and stays lit quite well

Favorite pipe: Boswell Bent smaller egg/billiard

UPDATE 5/312015 Very nice smoke, I wish that latakia was a bit stronger, and tends to be acrid in my itsy bitsy stubby pipes. Corncob does this blend nicely for sure

Long ribbon, smells of Virginia and Latakia. A little wet, better dry it 20 minutes. Creamy smoke, very soft. It starts with the sweetness of the Virginia and the Cavendish, the Latakia stays in the background. Chocolate notes are appreciated, oriental ?? I do not appreciate them. It does not attack the tongue. It is a smoke that is not boring, smooth and without complications, apt to smoke all day long.
