Vauen No. 7 Crunchy Blend

(3.60)
A very gentle and pleasant blend with a high proportion of black cavendish, golden Virginia, burley and broken Virginia flake. Deliciously flavoured with aromas from walnuts, vanilla and Mirabelle plums.
Notes: Formerly known as "No. 7 Mellow Nut", the name was changed to conform to the new EU laws.

What are most of the complaints about aromatics....burn hot, bite, flavor over-the-top, goopy, hard to keep lit, gurgle, ghosting(with all these pitfalls, makes you wonder why anyone smokes 'em).

And the there's Vauen Crunchy Blend. While there's nothing "crunchy" about this tobacco, it has, to my experience, NONE of the aforementioned aro problems. Smoked 8 bowls so far. If there are demons in this tobacco they are in hiding.

Plum is the dominant flavor, backed up nicely by Vanilla. Walnut is a backup to both. Yes, you can taste tobacco which is of fine quality. Casing isn't overdone. Doesn't need more than 1 relight. Burns clean and to the bottom. Yeah, it's not cheap. You get what you pay for. And I'll be getting more.

This one hits all the marks for me. Has a wonderful, nutty-smooth aroma from the tin. Packs well and once lit you really can taste the nuttiness. I find this to be one of the most amazing translations from tin note to smoke note to room note. It stays the same and really does give you a mellow, flavorful smoking experience. Smokes really dry and leaves your pipe with a sweet, nutty aroma. I truly can taste walnuts. This is becoming my favorite tobacco and my only complaint is that it's not cheap!!!! Room note is superior.

The tobacco is a very pleasant and very mild mixture with high amount of Black Cavendish togehter with Golden Virginia, Burley and Broken Virginia Flake. Out of the pouch comes a very pleasant and fruity note. It burns very well and the flavour of walnut-vanilla and mirabelle is very good. The tobacco is very mild. It can be your daily tobacco. The price for the tobacco is a little bit higher but the quality is also high.

Vauen - No.7 Crunchy Blend.

When I opened this I had no idea what I was dealing with. The name Crunchy wasn't too indicative of what type of blend it could be. But, upon opening the aromatic character jumped out!

It has an beguiling appearance. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a broken flake, none is in much of a flake form, but it's a display of large leafy ribbons (the bright Va), to smaller pieces. ''Plums'': the plums are the strongest aroma. My tin's decently hydrated, so on with the smoke.

Upon first light the taste is synonymous to the aroma: there's no question about it being plum flavoured. To me, the vanilla and walnut meld together, being equal in weight, giving a kind of ''sticky nuttiness''; if that makes sense? The tobaccos? Very nicely blended. Plenty of quite lazy tasting black Cavendish, which creates a cool temperature, also. The golden Virginia gives a definite sharpness, fresh and lemony. I notice a slight ripe-fruitiness from the broken Va flake, but not loads. The Burley? This is the blends backbone; rugged and caustic. It burns at a medium pace, without tongue-bite; IMO.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: nice.

Crunchy Blend? A very good aromatic. Four stars:

Highly recommended.

An outstanding aromatic. What amazed me was that I recently found a small 4 ounce jar with just two or three bowls of this that I had set aside for a blending project, but had forgotten all about. Most aromatics have a short shelf life, but this one, now with seven years on it, yes, seven years, not seven months, and now quite dry, though not turn-to-dust dry, is still packed with delicious creamy walnut flavor! It burns nicely, and the flavors stay steady until the very last minute or two, which can get a little ashy. But who cares, after enjoying forty minutes of delicious bite-free aromatic goodness?

So, looking at my old notes, I see that I always liked this, and had looked to buy more, but it was unavailable for some time. It has now reemerged with a new name due to EU regulations. My tin was one of the older tins with the “Mellow Nut” name and walnut artwork. The new name “Crunchy” seems kind of lame to me; this was the best that marketing could come up with?? When I think crunchy I think crisps, or a crunchy apple. Anyway, now that I’ve found it again, I will be buying more!

From my old notes (2016): Deep and mellow tin note, wonderful flavor and steady burn, like baked walnut pastry. When fresh the last couple minutes were actually the best, with the most concentration of flavor. In a wide chamber more of the fruity plum essence comes forth, but the creamy walnut flavor is always the prominent flavor. Forget Peterson Nutty Cut, or Nutty Irishman, if you like nutty flavors this is the one to get!
