Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Kendal No.6 Shag Cocoa

(2.33)
Kendal's No. 6 is a great, mellow tobacco, and thanks to the little dark fired leaf, smokes cooler than the gold. The aromatic comes with a tasty cocoa topping, giving the sweet tobacco a little extra flavor. Does bite if smoked too quickly and loosely.

So far as I know, this tobacco is only being sold in bulk. Despite of its given name, I cannot detect much of a Kendal essence here. The cocoa tin note, on the other hand, is quite pleasant, but this barely shows in your smoke, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I am not keen on aromatics, so I am not quite sure what to make of this blend. It seems like it tends to bite a bit, but this could be explained by the moist content. If let to dry properly, there is a chance it might improve, though I cannot tell for certain as I haven't tried yet. The smoking experience seems to improve a bit the more you smoke, but you never get to a point where it leaves you fully satisfied. And I think the culprit might be the casing and not so more the tobacco itself. I have detected a slight earthy undertone, but only in the last quarter of my bowl. As an overall achievement I'd not call this an awful smoke, but it is way below my standards anyway, so it is going to get a 2 star rating.

Gawith Hoggarth - Kendal No6 Shag-Aromatic Cocoa.

My initial impression of this isn't a very enthralling one. It resembles cigarette tobacco with a really slight aroma of cocoa, and I mean REALLY SLIGHT!

Once lit I find it to be quite enjoyable, apart from some bite which I'll get to later! The cocoa is added very sparingly, in fact if you were to smoke this whilst you have a slight cold the aromatic side would seem totally absent! The room-note also lacks any aromatic side, it could be a straight Virginia in the pipe for all I know! I mentioned bite earlier and like it says in the description "does bite if smoked too quickly and loosely", I can't argue with that! I find the nicotine to be medium airing towards mild, if you want N then you will have to be prepared for some tongue bite by zealously puffing for some!

This is by no means a horrible smoke but considering the few negative points two stars is my final rating.

No. 6 Shag-Aromatic does appear in the pouch to look like cigarette tobacco. There is little to no pouch scent at all. In the pipe it smokes with a mild added sweetness, but I wouldn’t have known it to be cocoa had it not been mentioned in the description. The Virginia takes the lead with a hint of dark fired in the background. Like many of the GH Virginia's, they offer up a little straw and wood. Unlike many other GH aromatics, No. 6 is mild in the nicotine department, only rising to a notch just below medium prior to the end of each smoke. I pack this on the firm side and have had the best results in a cob. There isn’t any complexity to this baccy either. It didn’t bite me, nor burn too warm when I packed this with care. I keep a number of GH shags in my cellar as they tend to be very “set it and forget it” type tobaccos. This is a simple blend, no doubt about that, but I found myself enjoying it more than expected, but still prefer the depth of flavor offered by some of the other GH shag cuts that offer a little more dark fired.
