Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Brown Pigtail Rum

(3.50)
A thin hand spun twist. A peppery smoke with lots of earthy/musky flavours. The addition of sugars and rum adds a little extra extra but in no way makes this your usual aromatic. A high nicotine content and good for those looking to replace cigarettes.

The powerful Virginias offer a fair amount of light fermented dark fruit and earth, some citrus, and a bit of vegetative, floral grassiness. The maple sugar topping is barely noticeable, but the sweet rum is more obvious, and very mildly tones down the tobaccos. Won’t bite, but sports a couple rough edges at times. If you are a fast puffer, you may experience a harsh note here and there. The nic-hit is a couple of steps past medium. Burns fairly cool, clean and slow with a very consistent, bold and sweet flavor. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and needs a fair number of relights. Has a pleasant, lingering after taste and strong room note. It’s not an all day smoke.

Gawith Hoggarth - Brown Pigtail Rum.

If you are new to the word of rope tobaccos and a little intimidated by the prep' time but still fancy turning your pipe to one then this is a superb rope to begin with! It isn't the thickest of ropes at all, more slim so this makes it brilliantly simple to prepare. I just cut some thin coins and then treat them as I do flake tobacco. The one thing that is needed is a short airing period, not ages, I just slice mine and let it have an hour or so prior to rubbing it. The aroma coming from it exudes sweet strength, not too aromatic but I get an ample whiff of Rum.

I get it lit and straight away I am impressed by how delicate the added tastes are. By no means are they un-noticeable, just not "harsh". The Virginia comes through as the dominant figure, while sitting further back is a sweet Rum taste that is at just the right volume to compliment the blend. Once lit it burns steadily, not needing re-lighting unless left for quite a while unattended. The nicotine now, if you don't like"N" then I doubt vehemently you will like this! But if like me, you enjoy it then you will appreciate B.P. Rum. The room note doesn't particularly suggest Rum, it's more of a sweet Virginia one, albeit not too heavy so it's not that offensive to others in the room. Another positive now, for me some twists can develop an acrid taste halfway down the bowl but this keeps its mellow flavour from beginning to end. The final positive (for me) is I get no bite throughout the entire bowl.

The only reason this won't become a regular in my rotation is although it has been executed superbly rum aromatics don't really float my boat!
