The floral note you encounter upon lighting up isn’t strong, and dissipates a little as you go along, but never completely vanishes. The nutty, toasty, woody, earthy, lightly molasses sweet burley takes a little lead over the black Virginia, which offers some sugar, toast, a few drops of honey, a little grass and citrus. The toppings are hard to define, but I certainly get a sense of caramel and perhaps coconut, a light spray of Irish mist, a few drops of vanilla, and an essence of chocolate throughout the experience. They sublimate the tobaccos to a fair degree. The nic-hit is fairly mild. The strength is a shade past mild, while the taste level falls just short of mild to medium. No chance of bite or harshness. You may want to give it a light dry time. Burns cool and clean, and a tad slow with a smooth, slightly creamy, mostly consistent flavor from start to finish. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, but no dottle. Requires a few relights. Has a very pleasant, slightly lingering after taste. Can be an all day smoke.

I discovered this tobacco on this website. I am a fan of the black Cavendish stuff, even just plain. I smoke mostly aromatics and I am always trying to find a black Cavendish better to my taste.

After three years of smoking, I tried a lot of these types of tobaccos but always had to change blends as I never found the perfect one. I decided to look on TR to help me find that rare pearl on the tin side as I always had house blends in the past. I finally found the definitive aromatic that I would enjoy smoking everyday. And I can order it straight to the manufacturer!

As mentioned in other reviews, it has a little bit of a floral taste when you light it up, but very soon, the flavor comes in. No bite, but lot of flavor. I still cannot tell if it is nutty, buttery, chocolatish or got cased with rum or vanilla, it seems to me like none of them and all of them at the time I like this blend because it doesn't seems to have a particular flavoring other than the sweetening of the tobacco. I usually pass on the "too flavorful kind of tobaccos, and this is a perfect balance.

I am finishing my first tin and will order a new one of this excellent aromatic, the best to my taste.

I made a tobaccoreviews.com account solely to review this tobacco. This is my first and maybe only review, and I must say, this is the best aromatic I have ever smoked. I've tried Uhle's and Boswell aromatics, as well as a few others, and have found Ebony to be the finest.

The tobacco itself comes in tiny cubes, that burn slow and full. The smoke is truely incredible, it rivals the fullness of some English and Latakia blends I have tried. As with many aromatics, they can be all smell and no taste, this is NOT the case whatsoever for ebony. This tobacco has a delicious and sweet chocolaty flavor, but the flavor of the tobacco is also ALL there, and is the reason this aromatic excels where others don't. The Black Virginia in this blend adds a lot of natural sweetness that kicks in half way through the bowl and ends up making the second-half of the bowl equal or better than the first half. Which I cannot say for any other aromatic I have smoked. Ebony is a unique aromatic that has none of the drawbacks that most aromatics have. Burns dry and cool, and never bites.

This tobacco also goes great when mixed with some of Peretti's other blends. Ive tried it with their cuban mixture and this combination tastes like an Oliva V series cigar, except much better. I have also mixed it with Tashkent and that is a very interesting and delicious combination as well.

I recommend this tobacco to any pipe smoker, if I could rate higher than 4 stars I would.

An aromatic masterpiece! This is their Black Virginia combined with the Peretti Signature Burley. It produces a smooth and warm/toasty flavor. It is Sweet, actually very sweet but not cloying. It takes only 1 match to get the party started and after that it is smooth sailing for abt. 30 mins. It is very similar to Wilke's Bohemian mixture. A word to the wise, at first light it produces a Lakeland/ Floral taste which I do not care for but within 30 seconds it totally disappears. This is a really tasty and unique aromatic. Try some and you will be pleased. 4 aromatic stars!

If you own a Peterson system pipe, give this blend a 15% to 20% dry down and put this blend in it. Without the dry time, flavorless. Just SOMEWHAT dried you get all the beautiful flavors that Jim’s review so eloquently and accurately notes. Additionally - the texture of the smoke is not overly thick but appreciably velvety. It is a great combination of subtly dark grassy and subtly sweet. Dark burley not bright. The LJP black Virginia was my first love of a near-perfect blend and gives a good change of pace while staying in the neighborhood. Strength - seems to vary - but just stronger then the middle point of mild. Flavor develops subtly but consistently. This is a bottom-of-the-bowl smoke for sure. Oddly - came up as unremarkable in my savinelli prince pipe and cobs but perfect in the Peterson where the Peterson would sadly dull otherwise prominent Virginia or aromatic flavors. I suspect moderate aging rounds this out well. That’s the BVA base getting fuller, as I have noted in the straight black from LJP. If this blend hits you first as flavorless - be patient, dry it a bit and try some different pipes. I’m very glad I went out on a limb with this one.

This is a really beautiful burley/virginia blend that smokes cool, smooth and delicious, from top to bottom. With low effort puffs, this will give you a long lasting, no fuss high quality smoke. One of my favorites!

A fine aromatic offering from Peretti - and absolutely gorgeous room note. My personal bent is to the English blends because I have yet to find an aromatic that can keep my interest from a flavor perspective. I was hoping this might be the exception, but alas, after about 1/4 bowl the flavor diminishes and leaves me wanting. If you are an aromatic fan I would definitely recommend you give this one a try.

This is good. It is not. Overwhelming easy going and smooth. This perks up middle of the bowl and stay let well. There is a good sweetness and some caramelly notes to this..it may be wrong but this blends terrific with other tobaccos instilling all its goodness to something else when added. Look for this One and enjoy- and hardly any bite- so don't puff too fast.

This is a very mellow, tasty sweet, low nicotine aromatic. It has a distinct and delicious rich vanilla smell in the bag. Burns nice with a sweet taste.Possible vanilla overtones. No tongue bite I notice. Vanilla/carmel room note.

I like it in the evenings because the nicotine level is low and consequently it doesn't keep me up with a nic-buzz. Very mild and relaxing. If you like vanilla this is the gourmet smoke for you.

I have spent a great deal of time trying various tobaccos looking for one with the following characteristics; tastes full and flavorful, burns well, is not in any way "goopy", and doesn't bite.

The result of my search was LJ Peretti's Ebony. For me it's an all day smoke. It's full of flavor, producing a rich velvety smoke, almost like chocolate, but in the "maduro wrapper of a cigar" type chocolate, not aromatic or flavored tobacco.

It burnes extremely well, never bites, and has an excellent aroma (which to me is part of the experience of pipe smoking.)

Regards, ~S
