McClelland No. 800 Black and Lemon

(3.22)
This medium mixture is unusual for an aromatic tobacco. McClelland has purposefully declined to use a top note so that the natural subtleties would not be covered up; therefore, the pouch aroma is delicate, reflecting only the rich vanilla and caramel flavors aged into the leaf using McClelland's heat-seasoning process. Black Cavendish and lemon Virginias...and a burning aroma that is beautiful and light.

I don't understand the low ratings for this one and I'm not sure what the last reviewer was smoking, but it could not have been this blend.. This is a blend that really has excellent Virginia sweetness coming through. It does have a very slight aromatic involved. In this tobacco the aromatic just seems like part of the true Virginia sweetness and doesn't come off tasting foreign. Lights easy, stays lit, and the blend just billows with true tangy, tangy virginia goodness. Outstanding again McClelland!

Update: I forgot to mention that this has a very nice nicotene hit. Perks me up like a cup of coffee.

Update after about going through a pund of this blend. I realized I do truley like it. The Virginia is there up front the Black cavendish is in the background. The Black give it the aroma while mixing with the Virginia therre is an almost faint citrus zest and somtimes a carmel toast flavor . The room note is a bit harsh better for the outdoors. Great summer smoke. The nicotine Med - High level which comes along along with the red virginia. A good old fashion tobacco. Good for the virginia lover looking for a little more aroma and taste. Comes in bulk at a good price. Easy to light not to much goop at the end of the bowl. The flavor of the Cavedish and the black is that of citrus & Carmel but very sublime. A smoke good any time. Friend: If you tobacco has the taste ash your pipe is dirty. CLEAN IT
If it is a cob and it taste lke ash toss it out and buy another for $2.99 Pipe Lesson 101 LOL

McClelland - No. 800 Black and Lemon.

I'm always a touch perplexed when the description reads Aromatic but lists no added flavours. Hey-ho!

Any hoo, the Virginia's cut finer than the black Cavendish, and accounts for more of the blend. This has been cellared for a few months and due to the loose packaging has achieved good hydration.

There's enough flavour for this to quantify as an aromatic. Citrus comes over stronger for the first part of the smoke, subsiding slightly after a quarter to make way for some caramel sweetness. I taste some vanilla but this isn't as potent as the citrus and caramel. If this was still in production, if(!), an apt name McClelland could change it to would be Sharp & Sweet. A bowl burns nicely, producing a bite free smoke.

Nicotine: mild to medium. Room-note: pleasant.

What a fantastic mixture. This has a wonderful tobacco/lemon note and lights easy. The flavor is a cornucopia of different taste. The overall taste to me is sweet Virginias, smoky lemon, a bit of sweet vinegar even some nutty flavors. This is a very delightful smoke that continues to entertain your palate throughout the bowl. Will bite just a bit if puffed to fast and room note is not super strong but again pleasant. This is actually a fun blend to smoke because I find you really never know what taste you will get next. I am unsure of the negative reviews but I guess everyone's palate is different. I smoked this right from the baggie so even fresh it was really pretty good.

McClelland is my go to brand for aromatics and No. 800 is one of the best I've tried. The lemon Virginias are very citrusy and easy on the tongue. The black cavendish is toasty with vanilla and caramel. The finish is very short which is why I gravitate to McClellands aros; it doesn't overwhelm the palate and doesn't get boring. Mild strength, wonderful room note, and bite free.

This well-balanced mixture is straight forward and very pleasant. The room note is wonderful. It serves as my "aromatic", without the gunk and goopy properties of most aromatics. It is inexpensive and a good choice for an all-day smoke.

Seldom finding disappointment with anything produced by McClelland, this is my second consecutive 1 star review of one of their blends.

I'm certain it's not a change in my personal tastes as I'm currently working through tins of Ashton Pebblecut, Holiday Cheer 2011 and Holiday Spirit 2011. A tinned 2004 bulk No 2010, and pouches of No. 1 Balkan, Oriental Mixture and Dark English. All McClelland product, and all ranging from good to exquisite.

Pouch Aroma: Traditional sweet American Aromatic with just a hint of McClellands signature scent.

Visual: Black & Lemon – what else!

Texture: I think most McClelland bends & flakes ship just a tad on the moist side, and that's just fine with me. Nice spongy mix of ribbon with a few chunks of broken flake, not too much tobacco "dust".

Pack: Smoked this gravity fed into the bowl with plenty of tapping to settle tobacco. Then a little more sprinkled on top and pressed down lightly. Definitely don't want to overpack this stuff – turns your bit into a faucet.

Lighting/Burn: Takes a bit to light, one long charring light, then collapse the ash and take your time lighting again. Sometimes wants to burn down the middle. I tried to diligently tamp from the edges inward. Needed a few relights in the last 3rd.

1st 3rd: A little dull and ashy on first light, then settles down into a slightly sweet bland insipid smoke. Where are the Virginias?

2nd 3rd: Very consistent - no flavor. Again, I thought there were Virginias here. Definitely gurgles.

Final 3rd: This portion begins just like the previous. Ends with lots of sticky dottle. Cleaning out the pipe makes me not want to load another pipe with this stuff.

Notes: Another disappointing aromatic from McClelland. Pretty looking stuff with practically no flavor, and mediocre burn qualities. Burned through almost 2 of my 4oz pouch. Will not finish.

Sweet, mild and good priced tobacco, easy to smoke besides. I felt the flavor is like citrus candy rather than vanilla. If you are looking for sweet and mild all-day tobacco, you may try this.
