McClelland No. 705 Walnut Liqueur

First, let me say that this is most definitely an aromatic tobacco; and while *I* enjoy quality aromatics, natural-only smokers may wish to avoid this one. This is not the goopy, low-quality stuff that many people detest, but it is very mild and uncomplicated, and it leaves a great room note after smoking. If you're looking for a full, rich blend, however, this will likely not satisfy you taste buds. The leaf is black and dark brown, almost chocolate in appearance, and the cut is in general of medium length. Like most McClelland blends, this is a fairly damp tobacco, though a bit drier than Frog Morton. It packs easily, lights easily and burns well, needing an average number of relights. I chose to try this first in an Edwards apple billiard I reserve for aromatics. In the first third of the bowl, the casing starts off strong and dominating. The first flavor I notice is a sweet, nut-liquor taste with a chocolatey richness, almost like chocolate almond cake. I couldn't identify what I'm tasting as walnut per se, but it certainly is nutty. The smoke is very smooth and mild, sweet without being cloying and thus far free of bite. I suspect that a good deal of the sweetness I'm tasting is coming from the tobacco rather than the casing. In the second third, some of the casing has burned off, though it still is pretty obvious. The smoke is still smooth and mild and bite-free, and is very nice blown out through the nose. This tobacco burns *very* fast (but not hot)! On to the last third, and the sweet nutty flavor is still clearly present. There is no real maturation of the tobacco during smoking, but the one-dimensional taste is far from unpleasant. There is some moisture in the bottom, but a pipe cleaner was not needed during the bowl. It also won't bite or burn hot, no matter how hard I puff. Overall, I enjoyed this tobacco as I would a light, sweet snack. This is not a complex tobacco, but if you're looking for a smooth, mild treat for your sweet tooth, you will likely enjoy this blend. It burns well and is based on quality tobacco; it's easy to go through several bowls of this without noticing it. If you prefer full English blends, smoke this as a nice change of pace; but don't expect a full-flavored, complex masterpiece.

This is a very nice blend. I will say it can be a little sharp and bite you quickly so be aware if your a puffer or New to pipes. I get a really nice with heavy liquor flavor and some walnut and other nutty taste. The taste last to the bottom of the bowl and burns a bit on the hot side. To me this is not a beginner aromatic and as you can see from some of the reviews here if you don't know the correct way to smoke an aromatic you will lose all the flavor and taste to heat. This requires some skill to keep it from getting out of control and getting hot and biting considerably. Once that happens you will lose any flavor and taste and this will be a very disappointing smoke. I find you can BEST enjoy this blend in a meerschaum bowl as it certainly keeps the smoke a bit cooler. This is a good blend that has some real nice flavor and the room note is wonderful. I certainly enjoyed my smokes of this blend and I will purchase more in the future.

I bought this on a recommendation, and it does not disappoint. It burns well, smells nice, and doesn't leave much chemical taste in my mouth.

I burned through my 10g sample pretty quickly. Will definitely be buying more.

For me a good tobacco has a pleasing room note, burns well, and doesn't taste like furniture polish. This ticks all the boxes.

Highly recommended if you like aromatics.

Remember the last time you broke in a new pipe with a naked bowl? You had to smoke it down to the bottom to begin caking it from the bottom up. Remember the taste of wood? That is exactly what this blend reminds me of. Their Special Black is the same, but worse. Liqueur? I didn't taste any. Nuts? I suppose, if nuts are like wood. The more you smoke it the worse it gets.With all the wonderful aromatics out there I can't imagine anyone trying them all, or many of them, and settling on this. But anything is possible. I even know a guy who married my first wife. Maybe he smokes this blend.

McClelland - No. 705 Walnut Liqueur.

The Virginia/brown Cavendish has been cut much finer than the black Cavendish. And, comparatively, there's far less black Cavendish, than brown Virginia/Cavendish. The pouch has quite a pungent aromatic smell, and the moisture's bang-on.

As expected, it's a well flavoured aromatic. At the start of a bowl the brandy's the leading flavour, having alcoholic sharpness and a wine like sweetness. After five or so minutes the walnut flavour comes through and transforms this from a brandy aromatic into the prescribed walnut liqueur blend. Of the tobaccos the black Cavendish gives the least flavour, the main tobacco taste is a honey-Virginia one. My biggest problem with this is the heat from it: way too much.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: pleasant.

The scent of this one is all round fairly strong, but not all that true to walnut. I felt that the brandy was a stronger influence to the overall flavour profile, which itself seems to lack something, caramelized sugars are sorely missed in this aromatic. Its a very earthy profile that requires no preparation to achieve, as this blend seems intent on offering little to the smoker. Room note is quite earthy, with only mild hinting towards walnut or brandy.

This tobacco left such a disappointment in my mind, to the point of nearly forgetting to catalogue its original purchase. I love a good cavendish, but this one is a bit of a flop.

Overall, i wont be purchasing this again as over time i have become less and less fond of it, but nevertheless, a good beginners smoke.

Bulk Purchase. I enjoyed this. Lived up to its name as I could certainly taste the walnut and the liqueur. Goes great with a stong cup of coffee. Packs easy and burns well. Give it a go

No nicotine, tongue bite, or gurgle. Slightly damp and required relighting even at four months old. This despite the fact that I was using a Zippo, which usually gets a bowl well lit and reduces the need for relights. Like other reviewers have noted, the taste is of the bitter skin on the walnut meat. I would not buy again.

Nothing special, that's all I would say if this program didn't insist upon twenty five words minimum. The tobacco is more appealing smoked outdoors than in according to my audience here at home.
