Planta Anno MMXIV (Fruity and Fragrant)

(1.00)
The 2014 Limited Edition blend from Planta is a sweet and very fruity aromatic. A smooth and creamy blend of double fermented black cavendish with zesty Virginias and cooling white burley. This classic continental mixture is given a sweet topping of Mango and Lychees. The ripe and fruity flavours are matched with a fragrant room note. The high quality and extensive processing makes this one of the finest aromatic tobaccos on the sale at the moment. The use of only natural flavourings and traditional blending techniques makes the annual Planta blends something special. Cut in a beautiful ribbon cut for ease of packing and at the right moisture content for a easy lighting and smoking experience. Anno MMXIV is not a strong tobacco smooth and mellow enough to smoke all day long. A great treat for all the smokers with a sweet tooth and because it's a limited edition and when its gone, it's really gone.

The tobaccos have very little say in this mixture as the toppings are the stars. You’ll notice a little grass from the Virginia, a small amount of wood and earth from the white burley, and a light sugariness and touch of toast from the black cavendish. The mango and perfumy, floral, bitter lychees toppings are the main toppings, though there’s an obvious fragrant clove-like essence along with a little spice. Sometimes, I get an undercurrent of rose, though that could be a chemical reaction caused by the toppings if rose was not added, and I'm not sure it was. The strength level is in the center of mild to medium. The nic-hit is just past mild. Won’t bite, but gets warm on the tongue if not sipped. Burns at a reasonable pace with a very consistent, sweet and sour, mildly creamy, incense-like, bitter, savory flavor. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and requires some relights. Has an unattractive, long lasting after taste. Not an all day smoke.

A friend of mine had recently bought this tobacco (in 2015) and was so enthousiastic about it, he got several tins and persuaded me to try a bowl when we met.

It's a colourful tin, but not vacuum-packed. Due to the foil bag in it, the tobacco was still in a good condition. However, the ribbon cut mixture contained quite a few twigs and consisted a lot of Black Cavendish. The tin note was very sweet, pleasant, and smelled of exotic fruit like mango. No tobacco scent whatsoever was decernable.

Filling and lighting my pipe was easy. From the beginning of the bowl right down to the bottom all you can taste is this strong, indisdinct fruity sweetness which has a slight musty finish. Again, it's not unpleasant, but there is no tobacco flavor at all. It needs to be smoked deliberately cool and slow or it'll bite your tongue, and your pipe will start to sputter. The fragrant room note equals the taste. Be careful! This tobacco ghosts your pipe after just one bowl.

Even though I like to smoke an aromatic from time to time, I didn't go out to get a tin of my own.

Planta - Anno MMXIV (Fruity and Fragrant).

Often as not, when I receive a package of blends from bulk I poke my nose into the pouches to get an inkling of how the smoke will be from them. The aroma from this gives an exact idea: strongly cased.

The coarse mixture arrived way too dry for long term cellaring. It includes ribbons, leafy pieces, and a few small broken flakes. Black Cavendish makes up only a small percentage, it's mainly yellow and brown pieces.

The smoke: of course, it lit easily. But the dehydration causes it to burn fast and hot. The toppings account for the majority of the flavour: lychees, mangoes, and a note reminiscent of sharp perfume. Out of the fruits I get more lychees compared to mangoes. The small amount of tobacco flavour's devoid of much black Cavendish, I get mostly VaBurs from it.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: nice, but quite strong.

Fruity and Fragrant? Not one for me. One star:

Not recommended.
