A natural blend of 100% Burleys, long cut, great taste and aroma. A soft, no bite experience for the traditional Burley smoker.

This is my granola bar between chewy whole meal bowls. The room note is sweet, buttery with a little grassy-ness, but not a bad grassy, like freshly reaped hay. I enjoy a bowl of this at least once a day, but I also use it to mix down some of my heavier English blends, about half and half is a great way to enliven the taste buds in the morning, IMO.

If you are prone to a heavier tobacco taste and have a tongue of steel, this will be of no interest to you. But, when I get lazy with my cadence on the pipe with a heavier mix (maybe while on an exciting day of fishing), my tongue can use a light burley like this, so that my tongue can rest a bit.

This one definitely gets the big jar in my collection.

Happy piping!!

Mild Mild Mild Pleasant to Tolerable

Out of the bag: Perfect for smoking right out of the bag. Not too moist, a distinct sweet scent in bulk. Not quite sugary. It's subdued and balanced by the scent of the burley itself.

Lighting: Lights quickly, expands nicely in the bowl, and stays lit with no problem. My first light lasted a full five minutes before I had to tamp or consider a true light.

Note: I smelled buttery rolls off the top. My brothers said it smelled like white cake to them. Regardless, it's very light- an almost sweet bakery scent.

Taste: On the palette, the flavor is even milder. To me it was as simple as warm bread. Nothing intense, but pleasant. In the nose, it takes on a spiciness that may bring out a salty-buttery hint, or possibly even peppery depending on how you'd describe the reaction. For me, this was less pleasant, and I tended to keep it in the mouth.

Aftertaste/smell: Due to the mild nature of this blend, the aftertaste leaves only that of the burley tobacco.

Recommended for: Beginners and those who would enjoy a mild, balanced blend with equal parts bakery-fresh warmth and burley flavor. Could be great for those transitioning from cigarettes and want a wonderfully smooth blend that is relaxing to smoke.

Not recommended for: Experienced smokers who seek a strong flavor, those who are sensitive or opposed to the distinct tobacco scent afterward, or indoor smokers who must find aromatic blends to please the wife or other housemates.

My two stars here reflect not so much the overall quality of the puffing experience, but what one reviewer refers to as the "one dimensional" quality of the experience. What I appreciate from this tobacco is the near absence of any kind of topping or casing (there may be a little, but I do not think so). The quality of the tobacco is very good, and it burns very clean to nice light gray ash at first and that becomes more mottled with darker grays as I near the bottom of the bowl. On occasion, I have set a smoking pipe aside for up to 4 minutes to grab a cup of coffee, and when I come back, it needs no relight. It stays lit and smolders nicely.

As others have noted the room note is warm and nutty with just a hint of wet maple leaves on a clear autumn morning. For me personally, this is a preferred puff when I wake from the occasional afternoon nap. Paired with a coffee, it delivers the right mix of caffeine and nicotine to recalibrate my senses.

I also like to use this break in a new pipe. Because it has little if any casing, I will run this through a couple of times before making a decision about its future puffing function (Latakia, Aromatic, Virginia, etc).

Because it is all Burley, it is one dimensional in comparison with other tobacco blends. I do wonder, however, if this one dimensionality is only because most smokers are accustomed to blended tobacco experiences. There may in fact be some subtle surprises in store for someone who chooses to focus only on Burleys for an extended time.

This is a very nice burley blend. In fact, this is probably the best traditional burley only tobacco I have ever tried. Way more quality than Prince Albert or Carter Hall and more American tasting than London Blend Burley.

This blend has a nice woodsy aroma in the pouch. I bought an ounce to give it a try. I notice a 50/50 mix of cube cut and long cut. I don't detect a noticeable flavoring agent. This blend came moist and needs to be dried out considerably. However, once dried, this blend produces a cool, long-lasting smoke.

The smoke is smooth and enriched with the flavor of Burley tobaccos. I liken it to eating almonds in a cigar humidor. It is nutty, cedar-like, and alternates between becoming slightly sweet and then more cigar-like. It is mild and flavor, but tasty. It has a medium nip on the tongue which can be mitigated by slow smoking.

The aroma is nice and this can be smoked all-day without overwhelming the palate. I do not notice the casing in the pouch, the flavor, or the aroma.

I'm not a big Burley fan, so I don't know if Burley aficionados would find this to be worthy of any esteem. I do know that I find this to be a quality alternative to the drug store Burley blends (having just revisited Carter Hall, I assure you that this is superior in every way). This isn't quite worthy of four stars, but is a solid and worth-while adventure for those who enjoy a true Burley. Congratulations to Lane for once again producing a quality product that is readily available.

This is indeed Lane's homage to good old time burley. Best in a cob, there is a very mild topping on it, which serves to sweeten the room note. If you puff gently, it won't get too bitter...maybe some though! A nice change of pace, sipping iced tea on the front porch. A mild, cool smoke.

Pure Tennessee chopped white Burley with mild sweetner. The sweetner is very restrained, and assures the tobacco a plesant aroma. Would be a good change of pace tobacco,or a good mixer. Really good high quality AA Burley grown right here in the Volunteer State. Tastes wonderful, give it a try!

When I simply must have burley, I reach for this or for MacBaren Burley London Blend.

This tobacco is not really "long cut," I would describe it as more of a square cut, but I quibble.

It has a distinctive burley pouch aroma, with pronounced butterscotch overtones. It is not cased. It may be lightly topped, but I could be wrong. It has a delicious, unmistakably nutty burley flavor, particularly during the first third of a bowl. The room note is especially nice. My wife's favorite.

It burns fairly well, leaving a medium to dark grey ash. Unfortunately, it usually develops some bitterness during the last third and must be dumped.

I do blend this, usually with McClelland 5100. My own Half & Half. Yum!

Because I do enjoy a pure burley tobacco every now and then, I recently smoked a couple of bowls of this stuff that I stole (with permission, of course) from a friend's pouch. This tobacco was used last year at my pipe club's slow-smoking contest and the winner kept it lit in a Peterson for almost an hour and a quarter. So, I suppose that means it stays lit well!

I tasted an upscale Prince Albert. This burley tobacco was about an 8 on a scale of 10 as far as burley taste goes. (I give PA a 4). It was not particularly impressive, but it sure was pleasant enough in my Tonino Jacono saddle-stem billiard.

If you are a burley lover and don't want to spend an arm and a leg for a smoke, then here you go.

This bulk-blend from Lane is perhaps their homage to the classic American over-the-counter-burley. The blend, advertised as 100% Burley, in the pouch is a solitary light brown color, with no hint of multiple tobaccos. It is a mix of cube-cut and long cut, with a slightly woody, sweet pouch aroma. The blend packs easily due to the consistent cut, and on first light, burned smoothly with a mild, natural-tobacco flavor. There is a smooth and mild natural sweetness here, but without the sweet added-in flavor of a cased tobacco. The blend has a rather one-dimensional character with a single note reminiscent of leather or wood, but not complex. The aroma and flavor are consistent through several relights, and the mildness continues till the moisture in the dottle makes relights more frequent, and eventually causes a harshness that signals the end of the session. This is a back-to-the-basics experience, without the complex overtones of English blends, and without the mouth-watering flavor of cased aromatics, sort of the table wine of the tobacco world. Good stuff though, and I will continue to smoke this and perhaps use it as a base for experimentation with some additional tobaccos to see if I can create something exciting from these humble beginnings. In short -Recommended for a change of pace.
