The toasty, woody, earthy, nutty burley is the lead component, and possesses little sweetness. The very citrusy, grassy bright Virginia also offers a drop of honey as a supporting player. The smoky, woody, earthy, floral, herbal, vegetative, spicy, dry and very sour Turkish barely edges out the smoky, woody, earthy, musty sweet Cyprian Latakia. There are a few times I noticed the Latakia take the smallest lead over the Turkish possible. The spicy, raisiny, plumy, earthy perique is a condiment. So is the sugary black cavendish, which helps tame some rough edges. The vanilla and light anise toppings mildly sublimate the tobaccos, and tends to weaken a mite in the last third of the experience. The strength is just past the center of mild to medium, while the taste barely reaches the medium threshold. The nic-hit is in the center of mild to medium. Won’t bite, but can tingle the tongue if not puffed slowly. Has few rough edges and no harshness. Burns a tad warm and very clean with a fairly consistent, sweet and spicy, lightly sour and savory, floral flavor that translates the short lived, pleasant after taste. The room note is a touch stronger. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. An all day aromatic American English with a little punch and character. Two and a half stars due to the warm burn and bite potential.

Read my review of 3-Star Blue, turn the heat up a notch and you've got Gold. Or, in this case, pewter--as in peee-youu! I'll pass.

I agree with the other reviews of this stuff. There is no taste of tobacco and leaves a lingering soapy taste on the palate. Not recommended.

Whereas Blue is decent, Red is better, Gold is too much of the wrong stuff. Very hot burning, and bitey for me.

Highly aromatic and extremely hot, I only smoked a couple of bowls of this before I gave it away. It actually burned so hot that it made little blisters pop up in the varnish of an old Kaywoodie. Tongue bite paradise...

While I prefer Blue, Gold is tasty. That said, I did have to learn how to smoke this. If puffed quickly, this will get hot (so will Blue). Taking the time to puff slowly and gently, (as pipe smokers are supposed to do) it is actually good.

I also found that it can be tamed during one's training period that my Savinelli filter halped tame things a bit. Now I don't use the filter.

Developing the slow puffing habit pays off with other tobaccos.

See my review on Three Star Blue. This is a more aromatic version of their most popular Blue Blend.
