The 1897 blend is a colorful combination of light, golden Virginias, bronze Burleys and a touch of Black Cavendish. The base of rich vanilla combines with notes of mild, sweet honey for a gentle aromatic sweetness.

Mild Mild Mild to Medium Pleasant

Got this as a free sample from smokingpipes.com.

Somewhat sweet with the mild flavor of bright Virginias and the added flavors of honey and vanilla. Didn't expect to like this, but it's actually pretty good. No bite, but will burn hot if you push it. Smoked at a moderate pace it maintains flavor and stays relatively cool.

This blend isn't bad, but its not great. The taste is okay if you like aromatics. The room note is great, very sweet and the vanilla is strong.

I didn't enjoy it in either pipe, it was too light in the church warden. The aftertaste isn't very good but it is light.

Wouldn't recommend for most.

Like the 1957 member of the 4th Generation series, the 1897 was a disappointment. It is too expensive for what it is. But the good news is: you can enjoy virtually the same tobacco by purchasing Mac Baren 7 Seas Royal in bulk at less than half the price!

The aroma is pleasant: again, fresh creamy vanilla, but this time with a slight undertone of tart fruit. Both the flavour and aroma are well balanced, and hold up during the entire smoke.

Being overly moist out of the tin, I dried it several hours before smoking. This had a very positive effect on the flavour and burn. I recommend doing likewise.

The tobacco appears identical to Mac Baren 7 Seas Royal, but the tin and room aroma are better in 1897. However, that doesn't warrant the outrageous price tag. Particularly considering how economical the 7 Seas tobaccos are.

In general I have a very high opinion of Stokkebye tobaccos: excellent quality and value, with a good range of cuts, flavours and aromas. However the 4th Generation line is a bit of a let down, barring of course 1931 which is an absolutely top notch flake.
