Bright cross-cut Virginias, brown, earthy Burleys, rich black Cavendish, and a dose of broken flake are here combined into a hand-blended smoking mixture, before finally being topped with a flavorful aromatic to produce a balanced, complex blend that is utterly unique to Mac Baren's Halberg series.

I got a brick of this at the Chicago show. It's a very luxurious presentation, and the tobacco is very good quality.

In the bag, it smells terrific, the red is a lot more mellow smelling than the others, less fruity.

In the pipe, it packs fine and lights easily, but I can't get either a tobacco taste or the aromatic flavor out of the burn. So it leaves me a little flat. Smoke-able stuff, no bite, no kick. But if you want an outright aromatic, there are certainly better choices. In fact I prefer Black Ambrosia from the same blender.

EDIT: bump this up to 3. I think I was expecting too much, but smoking this head to head with other aros leads me to think that it's pretty good within the category.

A complex mildly aromatic mixture full of satisfying flavour. That's my strongest overall impression, without putting too fine a point on it.

Everything about this blend is a treat to behold. The packaging is a marvel. But the main feature is the variety of beautiful, flawless tobacco leaves. The cuts range from ribbon to broken flake to wide colourful strands.

From a visual inspection the main components are Virginia, black cavendish, burley and oriental. The pouch aroma is discreet but mouth watering. There's nothing conspicuously "aromatic" about it in the usual sense, other than that it smells very very good.

My wife remarked on the pronounced room note but I failed to detect it to any great degree. The flavour was the chief player for me: genuine tobacco taste softened and made even more attractive by the hint of flaky pastry, toast, and high butterfat cream. Somewhat similar to Larsen 1864 in that regard.

Also there's a satisfying bass note that develops early and continues throughout the smoke, without becoming harsh or overbearing. Like the reassuring toll of Big Ben. In other words it's not light in the nicotine department, but it's not heavy either. Neither boring nor exciting. Just right.

Solidly recommended.

The Virginias have a natural sweetness, and some earthy notes from them and the burleys, which play in the background. There's also a slight toast note to the burleys. The black cavendish chips in with an very mild vanilla that compliments the sweet, almost fruity topping. Ribbon cut with broken flake that burns smooth, even, and dry without much moisture. Not one hint of a chemical taste exists here. Presented within one of the classiest boxes ever designed for a tobacco product, it's a well crafted, mild all day smoke that doesn't wear out your tongue or senses with a full flavor that never quits.
