The Virginias provide some citrus, dark fruit, a bit of earth, and a light grass and honey. They form the base of the blend. Competing with them for attention is the earthy, woody, very nutty, molasses sweet burley. The black cavendish offers some rich sugar. The vanilla creme topping has a little depth, and the almond continually acts as a condiment. They tone down the tobaccos a bit without dropping them out. The toppings do sport an alcohol note that some may find distracting, and tend to get a little syrupy in the last third of the experience. Won’t bite or get harsh, but can warm the tongue just mite if puffed fast. The strength level is just past the center of mild to medium. The taste falls a tad short of the medium threshold. The nic-hit is a little closer to mild than it is to medium. Burns at a reasonable pace with a lightly creamy and very sweet, consistent flavor from start to finish. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires just more than an average number of relights. Has a decent, lingering after taste. Can be an all day smoke for veteran smokers.

It consists of fairly dark brown ribbons together with some black pieces, presumably Black Cavendish. The tin note is exquisite, it smells like a high quality Danish mixture, which I think it’s what Limited Edition 2013 actually is. It smells like sweet pastry, I think I can get notes of maple syrup, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, a slight note of alcohol but I am not sure about the almonds which I really like as a flavor and for which I purchased the blend based on description.

It is slightly moist but nothing to prevent from smoking it straight away. Still a bit of drying will do it good. It has medium strength, it’s not shy on flavor, burns well and has a creamy mouthfeel.

Apart from the maple style of sweetness I get a flavor which reminds me a lot of Germain’s Uncle Tom Mixture which itself, in some respects, reminds me of …Best Brown Flake’s yeasty, honeyed Virginia sweetness. Coincidence? Might a tobacco similar to BBF have been used as a base for L.E. 2013? Why not…

Limited Edition 2013 might be difficult to find and a little pricey, but if you like Danish blends – some of which are prone to produce tongue bite – do buy it as it is one of the best of its kind.

Sam Gawith - 2013 ltd edition.

This one I found delectable! The unlit tobacco has a good aromatic fragrance to it but it does not smell too false nor perfume like as some aromatics do. The mixture is of a great moistness level and very enticing aesthetically. It takes to the flame with ease and gives a superbly even burn. The smoke is not too heavy with the aromatic side as you get a good aromatic hit of vanilla and almond but can still identify the different tobaccos in it. It does not bite and can be inhaled with ease as well. Room note is very pleasing and not too heavy either so will not offend non-smokers.

I find this to be the quintessential aromatic! Well done again Sam Gawith!

First of all a very nice tin the run is limited to 15,000 tins, so once it's gone it's gone for good. It comes in 100g tins with a painting of the company founder shame they have to put warning stickers on it. The tobacco is rather moist and may benefit from a little drying out it smells fantastic in the tin very much like Petersons Sun Set Breeze. When smoked the almond and vanilla creme come the forefront with the almond in the back ground and has a very nice sweet taste with no bite a rather fine aromatic, grab a tin before its all gone.

This is a very nice aromatic offering from Gawith. These limited edition runs are always bittersweet do to the limited availability, but it is worth hunting a tin of this down because it is well above average.

To me what makes this unique in the morass of aromatic offerings is the strength of the tobacco and the rich smooth smoke it produces. The flavoring is medium and it is not certainly not the most robust aromatic in the flavor department. It has real backbone, however, and it is an authentically medium strength tobacco. If you smoke this in a large bowl you will notice the nicotine, so if you enjoy that then you have something to look forward to. It also burns much smoother and with a creamier, richer smoke than many aromatics, and is cool unless truly abused by overpuffing, so the experience is one of enjoyment and reward. It also burns very easily and is not overly sweet.

You can readily see in the tin that this is mostly virginias and burley. The cavendish is in the background and rounds out the flavor, but does not overpower the tobacco flavors. The casing is not overbearing on the tobacco and combines in such a way that it compliments to smoke but does not seem separate or intrusive. Gawith calls this "harmonious" and they are correct. Their description of it being a "smooth, medium-strength experience with a plentiful volume of smoke, and a very friendly room-note"is spot, and this does not disappoint. The vanilla flavor is mild, and I have a hard time picking out a real almond flavor, but there is a mellow sweetness that is most likely a result of the almond casing.

It is a tad bit expensive, and for that reason you probably would not want this to be your daily smoke. A tin or two when enjoyed sporadically should last several years (at least if you are like me and have 50 or more blends open at any given time) and it is highly recommended as a real treat from Gawith.

This Limited Edition 2013 from Samuel Gawith is a very good compromise of English and aromatic. My tin was pleasantly dry but still fragrant with light floral vanilla and very mild almond. There was no heavy wet presence of humectant or sticky topping. The tobacco was easy to light and the smoke was cool and smooth. The tobacco taste was sweetly simple, but came through quite nicely. What it lacked in complexity of flavor was compensated for by fragrance, lack of bite, and the easy pleasure it brings. This is a relaxing, delightful smoke. For someone like me who prefers English blends, the seasonal aromatics offered at Christmas time each year are often too sweet and heavily flavored. This blend is a perfect alternative. Samuel Gawith Ltd. Ed 2013 is ideal for holiday gatherings and after dinner conversation. It will serve equally well with slippers, sweater, and a blazing fireplace. Because of it's limited production run, I thought I'd get a few tins to put aside - to age patiently and break open on winter holidays and evenings to come.

I am a serious pipe smoker a very definite taste for the good tobacco. No smoke candy. Basically smoke VaPer as Escudo, Orlik Golden Sliced, Luxury Bullseye Flake, Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls, etc. This is just to tell you that SG - 2013 Limited edition is a highly recommended and excellent tobacco. The acquired to check a review of a pipe smoker in this website which usually follow and consider him a mentor. So is it with disgust opened the can and indeed the smell made me close it immediately. After a few days with some curiosity to smoke it, thinking to dismiss rather to give to others less fortunate than I compadres, load my pipe, stop by for it my bic lighter and vuala !!! glory. It's a dessert that smoke once a week and rest my usual smokes of VaPer divine. So if you still reserve buy it, I assure you on the table that you will be getting a good deal and it will have in mind when you enjoy.

In conclusione:
Ottima la persistenza degli aromi e dei profumi nell'aria.
Un buon prodotto per gli amanti delle miscele aromatizzate.

Buying this tin was a bit of a risk-taking, given the probable age of the tobacco at the time of purchase (around 2022) and it's storage (ordinary tin + flavour-locked plastic bag, which means that the tobacco will, at some point, usually become dry and all the aromas will evaporate, leaving you with a bland mixture with an overwhelming taste of warm air). When opening the lid, I detected a slight scent of vanilla, along with a fair smell of Burley, and so decided to give it a try anyway.

The tobacco had to be rehydrated as it was pretty dry. No surprise there...
What did surprise me, was the fact that not all the aromas seemed to have evaporated. They were probably at least much more subdued than when the tobacco was more fresh, but they were still there.
It was fairly easy to light, gives a taste of vanilla and a slight note of hazelnuts and almonds, which becomes more prominent towards the middle of the bowl.

Room note could probably best be described as "smells like it tastes". Non-smokers seem to find the room note very pleasant.
I found it fairly difficult to keep lit: different pipes, variations in the packing or moisture of the tobacco did not seem to help, Whether this has something to do with the age of the tobacco, I do not know.
Towards the end, it grew a bit boring as the vanilla and almond aromas disappeared. A slight nuttiness from the Burley was still detectable, but other than that: nothing.

Conclusion: After about 10 years, it is still smokeable and still gives off a slight aroma of vanilla and almonds.
However, due to the fact that buying a 10 year old aromatic in a flavour-locked bag is a bit of a gamble in itself, I can only recommend this one somewhat.

Not always easy to get these limited editions on the European continent so I got the 2014 edition before the 2013 edition. As was a little disappointed by the 2014 edition but must say that the 2013 edition fills expectations one has with Samuel Gawith brand.

Nice honey smell when opening the plastic pouch, that smell being behind the virginia aroma. A very good aromatic, rather strong and fulfilling for an aromatic. I must say that the vanilla and almond flavours are quite light but I highly recommend the blend. And the room note if the room note is strong, good remarks from people around! If you have the chance to find a tin, get it!
