Since I tried this blend, it is all I have been smoking. It is right now my favorite blend. I absolutely love this stuff. It is mild gives no tongue bite is a little of a pain to keep lit --- but in my opinion the flavor is outstanding. Think sweet caramel and you got it . not sickening sweet but a deliciousness you will be going back to again and again. This is pure smoking enjoyment. You will not get a nicotine rush from this but if you enjoy aromatics as I do for the most part, you should give this one a try.

In a nutshell, I'm addicted to this stuff! Tastes of chocolate and vanilla and smells as good as it tastes. Its very similar to MacBaren's 7 Seas Black, but slightly sweeter to my tastes.

Maybe I've just smoked English blends so much for so long that my tastes are changing or I'm just now discovering a few aromatics that I actually like. Regardless, Dansk Black will have a permanent place in my cellar.

Peter Stokkebye - Dansk Black (No.47)

As someone blessed/cursed with a sensitive nose, I’ve never been a big fan of aromatics in general, because they’re usually unbalanced and overpowering. Restraint and subtlety seems sadly uncommon among such offerings, regardless of industry (tobacco, liquor, soaps, deodorants, room fresheners, candles, etc.)

Enough soapboxing. So, as someone who normally eschews aromatics, what is it that drew me to Dansk 47, you ask ? Answer: it has earned honest stars from many sources - not only good quality and value, but blendability, and (most importantly) balance and restraint in a category already crowded with highly aromatized excesses, sold in bulk, from a plethora of sources. Vanilla is, after all, THE single most ubiquitous aromatic there is in the tobacco universe, to the point where it’s almost impossible to say the word “cavendish” without first mumbling “vanilla”.

DB47 is more noteworthy for the common sins it avoids, rather than for any one thing it does particularly well. The moisture level for instance is just right - neither too gummy/sticky, nor too dryish. The black ribbons, although a tad longish (easily corrected with a chef knife), are springy and well behaved, pack nicely on their own, and play nicely with others in homemade blends. The tin aroma, while certainly clear, forward and unambiguous, manages to avoid being overpowering or reeking of artifice. The smoking qualities stay cool and supremely mild, while avoiding gloppiness (from excess moisture or humecants) and tongue bite (from excess alkalinity). DB47 clears these common pitfalls with ease, leaving behind most of its competitors, and it does so at a competitive price.

Could it be improved ? Oh most definitely ... but that would run contrary to its price point. In this range, there’s simply no need for premium boutique vanillas, or rare burleys and virginias from distant exotic lands - they’d be too expensive, and leave the resulting blend too ‘busy’, and it would lose the simple inexpensive elegance that makes it what it is.

So, what’s the bottom line ? This is an inexpensive, gentle, wonderfully cool and mellow black cav that gets little wrong, and a quite a few things right. It’s simple, clean, balanced, reasonably restrained and uncomplicated. Its friendly to buy, friendly load, friendly to smoke, and friendly to blend. A win win.

As for the flavor particulars - there’s the obvious top notes of decent quality generic vanilla, paired with a smooth and pleasant note of caramel/toffee/milkfudge. Further back in the finish I find a touch of chocolate (probably a natural character of the cavendish that may have been discreetly nudged), and perhaps the tiniest whisper of cherry and coffee.

There's a lot of bang for the buck here, and its earned a spot in my blending alcove. I give it 3 of 4 stars (very good), but it deserves a little more. I wish this site used a 5 star system so I could give it 4 (excellent). Add a FULL star if you're an aromatic fan on a budget.

My hunt for the perfect black cav blend is over. This is a perfect example of a harmonious smoke. Tastes great, like caramel, mild licorice, cocoa, and a really nice black Cavendish flavor that isn't hidden under the casing. It all melds perfectly. I am very impressed and will be keeping this in my rotation. Perhaps this isnt for everyone but I believe even people who dont normally smoke aros would appreciate this.
