Saw this in Walgreen on clearance. None of their other tobaccos were being cleared out. This made me curious so I looked up the other review and thought "why not"? I went home and lit some up in a new Missouri Meershaum and was very pleasantly surprised. However, after half a can (3-1/2 oz) it became irritating and I can't exactly say why.

There's been a debate in the past few years among us pipesters whether OTC's are inferior to some of the big name labels like MacBaren, Peterson, Stockebeye, etc. Consider the debate solved. Did a little digging and this brand is made by Sutliff. Which also manufactures Admiral's Choice and Super Value. This is not inferior product. BG is Walgreen's private label. These are, more or less, Cavendish style blends which by their very nature are meant to be moist blends. There was an issue with the bulk bags for a few years, but that has changed now that the 3.5 oz tins preserve the tobacco longer. That being said, the BG blends such as Toasted Cavendish and Natural are designed as blending components. The Burley and Black, Cherry, Vanilla and Golden Burley are meant to be smoked unilaterally. Although you could mix them with other blends if you wanted to stretch things out. I found airing out BG Natural and Toasted Cavendish on parchment paper, mixing the two and jarring for two to three months results in a quality and rewarding smoke. BG Natural has a light cognac/vanilla/nutty note. The quality of the leaf has also improved. I did notice a slight sourness to the virginias, which might be offputting at first. A good tamper or two keeps things in check. I noticed the sourness more when I used a Medico paper filter, so smoking without one offers best results. In short, you'r getting Sutliff quality at a drugstore private label price. Did I mention the money you save...
