Very Mild None Detected Very Mild Pleasant to Tolerable

If Dunhill Standard Mixture Mild were a wine it would be a something along the lines of a Pinot Grigio or Orvieto. Light, dry and exceedingly subtle, in the bowl it offers a mix of mild, semi-sweet Virginias and snappy Orientals with just the faintest hint of smokiness. Light in body, the short finish is dry and vapid.

Drawn from a tin produced by Murray's shortly prior to their closing in 2004, the sample on which this review is based is composed of tobaccos of obvious quality which have been carefully prepared. At the same time, however, within the continuum of the original 'Standard Mixture' line (i.e., mild - medium - full) it should come as no surprise that Standard Mixture Mild is what it is: mild. One imagines, perhaps nostalgically, that in the context of Dunhill's long since defunct marketing scheme this would be a mixture delivered to the new, occasional, or trend conscious customer who laid out a substantial sum for a pipe not for the purposes of smoking tobacco but rather for the purposes of being seen smoking a Dunhill pipe which, of course, must be duly filled with Dunhill tobacco, ignited with a Dunhill lighter, tamped with a Dunhill tamper, kept clean with a Dunhill pipe care kit, and placed in a fine Dunhill leather pouch. Style, flair, elegance - the actual smoke is immaterial, being rather a potential source of irritation. There is, of course, nothing wrong with such and it was equally the case the Dunhill also marketed smoking mixtures of rare and stunning quality to an informed and demanding clientele who cared differently about the marque as such. Here one imagines gentlemen whose intentions were focused more on the mixture itself rather than the marque. While adding to the experience, in contradistinction to the former for such connoisseurs it was accoutrement which was immaterial. Rather, it was the actual smoke which was of importance. And thus Durbar, My Mixture 965, Nightcap, London Mixture, Baby's Bottom, Ye Olde Signe, and the other fine smoking mixtures which made it into regular production quite early on. While everyone is a gentlemen some are more gentile than others, yet all are welcome to contribute to the bottom line. Alfred and company well knew what they were doing.

Flash forward to the early 21st-century, where the pleasures of the pipe - perceived or otherwise - are defined by a rather different ethos. Here, Standard Mixture Mild seems to have little place, with its persistence (currently as 'Standard Mixture Mellow' in select European markets) being more of a testament to what the Dunhill marque (for Alfred Dunhill Ltd. died long, long ago) has been able to maintain on cultural inertia alone rather than the intrinsic characteristics of currently produced pipes, smoking mixtures, and accoutrements. While admittedly the continental scene is a bit different than that which has obtained in recent years in North America, in the absence of a ready 'pipe-smoker' lifestyle market it is actually quite amazing that a mixture such as Standard Mixture Mild lasted beyond the 1980s - on both sides of the pond. Whether or not it will return as part of the current Danish-produced Dunhill portfolio once a US distributor steps up to take responsibility for the line is ultimately unclear, but this reviewer cannot imagine that it would do well at all - in fact, does anyone recall it ever doing well amongst those who actually pay attention to what they are smoking (rather than those who pay attention to that in which it is being smoked)?

At the same time, however, an open tin is an open tin and for those interested, perhaps more as obsessive enthusiasts than anything else, it demands comment. While perhaps ultimately unfair to the mixture itself, while not an altogether unpleasant smoking mixture for this reviewer Standard Mixture Mild is a dud. As an open tin presents limited options, however, it must be dealt with. Barring dumping its contents into a flower bed, I would say that it is best smoked in larger pipes which have been heavily ghosted by Latakia. Alternatively, a judicious dash of blending Latakia (Cyprian) and a pinch of Perique added to what remains in said tin does the job even better, with whatever remains of unopened tins in the cellar being turned out to collectors. Given what is available nowadays by way of truly excellent smoking mixtures, beyond acquiring a tin or two for collectible value there seems to be little reason to seek it out, and even less of a reason to open one which might have made it into the cellar when it can easily be exchanged, many times over by weight, for something actually worth smoking.

I am a friend of the stouter blends, and delayed both by reviews here and by the label saying "mellow," I now bought a tin just on basic principles, and found I must contradict a goodly number of reviews here: this blend is definitely not weak. It is mellow though... don't let that confuse you. Let me explain.

Opening the tin, there is a good note of white wine in the aroma; that is something I expect of good VAs, which have been added to this blend to replace some of the Latakia "missing" in comparison with the "standard" Standard Mixture. So, I know there is some sweetness ahead.

The ribbon cut is as I expect; not narrower compared to, e.g., Dunhill 965 or London, as some have noted, but the same width, which makes for easy stuffing straight from the new tin; also for easy lighting. This is a one-match job for me, and the 'baccy keeps glowing until there is nothing but ashes left in the bowl without ever turning hot.

The flavour is much sweeter and, as the blend's name suggests, more mellow than the "standard" Standard Mixture, which is rougher on the tongue. The room note is... well, it's an English. Good one for that, though. Throughout the smoke, I notice the VA sweetness and wine-y-ness (which I enjoy), off-set to good effect by the Orientals' driness and nuttiness, the relatively small amount of Latakia contributing little beyond good burning characteristics and some spice.

As others have noted, this blend can be subtle, especially for those used to the stronger-flavoured, after-dinner blends. The Nic content is nevertheless far from "mild" or "mellow;" the flavour is -- sidestreaming some smoke through the nose gives me a wonderful, nutty and spicy note.

I enjoy this blend mostly in the evenings, day's work done, alongside a nice Irish Single Malt or a good, aged Rum.

Similar in cut and composition to the Medium version, with a strong (and to me rather unplesant) sweet/pungent tin aroma: a clear hint of the domination of the red toasted Virginias and of the spicy orientals. Luckily this strong smell (which reminds somewhat of CAO's Midnight Ride) disappears after a couple of days after opening the tin. The main difference between this and Medium is that here there's very little Latakia! Burning qualities are excellent as usual with Dunhill, but I really don't like this tobacco: in truth, it has a bit more taste than most other light English mixtures, but it is very "empty" in body and ultimately unsatisfactory. When you first open the tin, it is sharp and pungent and taste, spicy like the tin aroma, but it leaves the mouth dry: a very unpleasant feeling. As soon as the tin aroma vanishes (1-2 days), also the taste becomes blander: luckily also the mouth drying effect disappears. Pipestud was right in saying that it is almost like smoking cardboard: I often disagree with his reviews, but this time he may have been right (this tobacco has more taste than other light english mixtures, but it is a very grey and unpleasant taste). Really, Standard Mixture Medium is MUCH superior, with a full spicy sweetness that isn't found in this lighter brother! Overall, it's Dunhill's EM that I enjoy less, and the only one I will never try again: all their other offerings are good (even if I consider EMP a bit too mild and I don't appreciate too much Durbar's harshness, but they are good tobaccos anyway), but this one lacks distinction. It isn't completely bad (there are lots of worse EMs out there), but it isn't worthy of the Dunhill name. If I wanted a light, smooth English mixture for the whole day, I'd pick Frog Morton instead.

Appearance: A medium width ribbon cut, mostly light and medium colors. Ribbons are quite uniform, typical Dunhill attention to detail.

Aroma: Lots of Virginia base, with a fair amount of Turkish and just a little Latakia The aroma leads you to believe that the Va is the star.

Packing: Packs easily in most pipes, group 3 and up.

Lighting: Lights easily, more easily than most Dunhill blends..Probably because of the narrower cut.

Initial flavor: The Va comes across first, but not too assertively. The Turkish adds its flavor soon after, and the Latakia stays discreetly in the background.

Mid-bowl: A classic Mild English/Oriental blend. I would classify it as considerably milder than medium (3 or 3.5 on a scale of 10,), but a gentle beguiling flavor. No gurgles noted. The Va, Turkish and Latakia continue to be the key players.

Finish: Well behaved right to the end, leaves a gray ash and nothing else.

Summary: Reminds me of my dearly beloved John Cotton #1 Mild, only a bit ligher in the Latakia. I think it?s the best English blend for warm weather, and an excellent waker-upper.

Bought several times in mid '80s as Standard Mixture MILD, recently I tryed again as MELLOW: 3 tins in a box, at Ben Gurion Airport Duty Free in Tel Aviv, at a really interesting tax free price. At opening you can see nice ribbons, perfectly cut and a little thinner than other Dunhill mixtures, with a typical EM aroma, but really not strong: more Virginia and less Latakia than usual. Little moisture.

Aroma: classic EM aroma, but quite light.

Taste: I love good EMs, and this is quite good, even if I think that now it's lighter than in '80s, and I usually prefer more strenght. It goes better a couple of days after opening, by me.

Room note: maybe not the women choice, but light and honest, not intrusive or sticky.

Burning: it lights very easily, and burns a bit faster than usual preferred rough cut EMs, but is OK. Silver ash only, at the end.

Best briars: all; EM/balkan dedicated briars too, but this weaken a bit that wonderful strong ghost scent inside...

Elegant, smooth, surely not overwhelming: maybe ideal for beginners or aro smokers to taste an EM. An all-long-day mixture, even if I usually prefer more latakia, orientals and a stronger personality (as, i.e., the Dunhill Medium Mixture...). Recommended.

This is a good blend. Let it get dry, if you try to smoke it straight from a new tin, then it will smoke wet, hot, and bite your tounge. I have had this tin open for several months, and it is nearing its end.

When I first smoked this blend, it was way too moist. It didnt smoke well, and tasted tart.

However, now that its got a bit of age and time to dry out it has developed into something very nice. The latakia aspect is there, but it is really a sweet smoke. It is similar to early morning pipe, but with a much sweeter flavor. It also has a bit of a fresh hay taste and smell that is quite nice. The orientals are also pretty dominant in the flavor.

The blend is a well balanced mild english blend. It has a lot of flavor, but none of the flavors are very powerful like in heavier english blends.

Worth a try!

Tin Aroma: A quite distinct sweet, must odor. Also, this sweet must smell is later present in the dottle.

Tobacco: A very predominant bright, light sand hue, with small amounts of dark-brown and black; lighter in color than SM Medium. Unless my eyes deceived me, by the next day, the overall hue had aged to medium to dark tan. Just the right amount of moisture, being rather light.

Standard Dunhill long thin ribbon cut. One of the key signatures of quality, the ribbon strands are intricately interwoven, producing a thick mat.

Initial: Packed easily enough, after the strands are pulled apart. Took to the match instaneously.

Taste: Mildly sweet VA, not much Latakia, very toasty VA in taste and aroma. Seemed to have a mild nutty honey character mid-bowl. The bottom of the bowl can get hot. Mild tongue bite is a rarity. A nice honey oat quality.

Aroma: Like a drive in the countryside with clover fields in the distance; moderate toasty VA. No Latakia blast, not at all; just a nice, cool honey oat softness.

Nicotine: Very mild, being milder the SM Medium. Still, SM Mild does give a mild buzz.

Room Note: As with other English blends, not extremely fantastic, but natural, like SM Medium, but milder. About as mild a room note as you can get with a traditional English blend, having a moderate toasty VA character.

Overall: Contrary to many others, I like it for the very fact that it is so mild, so VA. This is one of the best smokes I've ever had.

I swear this and SM Med act different in the pipe, and taste and smell different, depending on how they are packed. One packing technique gives less taste and more moisture. It seems that half a bowl, well-packed, works best. In a large bowl, there is initially a lack of flavor, and light moisture. Mid-bowl, the flavors and aroma seem to come to fruition.

This could be your all-day smoke.

This might well become that one perfect standard I've always been seeking.

Of all the Dunhill offerings, this is probably my least favorite, which isn't to say I don't like it. "Mild" is the key word here; it's an apt description of the flavor and strength of Standard Mixture Mild. The flavor is dominated by the Virginias, with the Orientals in the background and the Latakia only adding some light seasoning. The sweet-and- sour tin aroma is inviting, and the ribbon-cut tobacco packs well, lights easily and burns smoothly. Standard Mild is a mixture that won't demand a lot of your attention; it's just not that complex. It's a decent choice for smoking when you're busy doing other things and can't devote your time to concentrating on, and savoring, the tobacco. I like it occasionally as a change of pace from my customary full English or Balkan mixtures. For a Virgina-based blend with more character, the Dunhill line offers Royal Yacht and Elizabethan Mixture, the latter with a dash of Perique to give it a little added zing. Several of McClelland's Virginas offer fuller flavor and greater strength too; Standard Mild is noticeably less strong than most of the other Dunhill tobaccos. For an uncomplicated, mild smoke, Standard Mixture Mild isn't a bad choice, but it's not one I smoke often.

Appearance: Typical Dunhill cut, similar to EMP and 965: a nice ribbon cut that is not overly thin. Fairly light in appearance in comparison to the heavier Dunhill blends with respect to latakia.

Tin Aroma: Upon opening, this has an aroma that I associate with all Dunhill blends when first opened. It is pungent, and slightly sour smelling. This retreats fairly quickly. I have obtained this same aroma in my own blending experiments by steaming in a sealed container..I have always wondered if Dunhill steams in the can, or transfers recently steamed tobacco to the tin before it has a chance to air.

Flavor: This is a flavorful blend to my taste. I would see how this would seem tasteless to someone attempting it immediately upon opening, or if they preferred blends with a higher proportion of Latakia. The flavor is primarily Turkish to me, with enough Virginia sweetness to play a nice contrast, akin to the solo instrument in a Baroque concerto (borrowing some of GLP?s musical figurative language here).

Smoking characteristics are very good, without excessive moisture and comfortable on the mouth.

This is not a full flavored smoke, but is more delicate. Anyone approaching this with an eye toward evaluating it on it?s own merits, rather than in comparison to a full flavored latakia, will be well rewarded for the effort.

A friend & I smoked this blend as I assisted him in gaining an understanding of how a VERY GOOD, mild, ENGLISH mixture should be presented. We sampled other "High Quality", "Mild", ENGLISH mixtures in comparison to illustrate the method of how to select one. Most experienced connoisseurs might automatically disqualify this blend because it is so mild and vacant of the more standard flavor profile presented in a medium ENGLISH, but Dunhill's Std. Mixture Mellow/Mild is the quintessential model in experiencing a mild ENGLISH. This mixture should be in everyone's stable of tobaccos, particularly for the novice enthusiast.

Currently I find Dunhill to be one of my two "go to" brands. (Mac Baren, oddly, the second) However, I felt a bit disappointed by this offering. The light was harsh & sour on my palate. Then, once the pangs subsided from getting the bowl started I could settle in to smoke. And waited.... This mixture is mild, almost bland until the last half to third of the bowl. I kept awaiting the arrival of Latakia, only to catch a faint whisper, "I'll be there in a minute", here and there. The Virginias aren't sweet. They're like your second cousin at the family reunion. In the room, but they have nothing to say.

Perhaps the best description for this mixture is an analogy of an old worn out hound dog. When you first arrive it tries to snarl viciously, then, flops down on the back porch & goes back to sleep. In the end, you're just glad it doesn't try to hump your leg.

I've been smoking a pipe seriously (paying attention to what I'm doing)and frequently for only 2 months but casually and infrequently for several years.

Pipe: smooth un-decorated Meerschaum ("Warrior" artist Tekin) Brand new pipe, first bowl.

Tin was 2 weeks old having been opened several times.

Bites a little but not paralyzingly when getting the char going on the way to the initial tamping. And again when re-lighting in the middle of the bowl.

Had to relight 4 times through out.

Mild is, as mild does.

Nutty, bit of fruit(like dried apple), not sweet. A very pleasant, dry and uneventful smoke.

Doesn't demand allot of attention other than keeping it lit so Id probably enjoy this mid day while reading or focused on some distracting activity.

Even after 7 years in the tin, it still looks and smells new and fresh upon opening. The Oriental leaf is prominent, the Latakia present but not dominant, and the sweet Virginia provides an excellent foundation. It is an excellent English.

As others have noted, it bites if smoked vigorously. Nicotine dose is moderate.

Overall, an excellent smoke, an all-day English, but not a Nirvana experience.

Update, January 2013: I purchased a tin of the new stuff and thought it would be fun to compare and contrast Murray's versus Orlik's.

To begin, the tin note of the Murray's is classic English: Orientals with a touch of Latakia. Orlik's in the tin is much stronger smelling, sour/acidic and fruity. And the new Mellow blend has more bright orange color to the blend.

I suspect that Orlik has added a little sugar-water topping that makes their version a little more moist and causes a little more tongue-bite. But by mid- bowl the bite has disappeared from both versions.

I smoked both in identical small acorn briars, alternating between the two. They both paired well with my glass of Laphroiag. It was a wonderful experience, a great indulgence.

I could nit-pick and say that the Murray's is more 'mild' and the Orlik's less 'mellow.' Perhaps the older stuff has a broader flavor range. But really, the main difference was that the Murray's tin was 7 years older. I suspect that with age, I would not be able to tell them apart. Smoking them separately, I felt a tad more nicotine with Orlik's, earning the name 'Mellow.' But they are both still in the moderate range of Vitamin N.

Overall, I think Orlik nailed it and has faithfully reproduced this blend.

If mild is what you want, this is a decent place to go. It can bite slightly if you puff too fast. There's not a ton of complexity, but it's not designed to give you that. I'd say it's more for those starting on English blends, so don't expect the latakia or the orientals to hit you between the eyes. If you have to add stronger elements to enjoy it, you've bought the wrong tobacco. I like it when I want something light, but need a little latakia in my life. This will do that for you. Take it for what it's supposed to be and you won't be disappointed.

Standard Mixture Mild (Mellow), is one that I just can't seem to latch onto. Most Dunhill blends have a nice kick from Lady N and the tobacco is always of high quality and that is the case with SMM. It's the blend itself that just doesn't work. The flavors are simply too flat. It burns cleanly, packs easily blah, blah, blah, but in a word, it's boring. This review is based on my only two remaining tins of the Murray's incarnation. The age on the tins hasn't added much to the flavor. I'm not a real English blend smoker but I do have a number of tins of various English-style mixtures that I crack open from time to time. Usually I find them overly spicy in the mouth and suffocating but this one is different, seems to me.

Other reviewers have already written about the blend's name change to Standard Mixture Mellow rather than Mild. Whether "mellow" or "mild" this blend suits my taste a little better than some of the heavier blends. The tin aroma is subtly English in character, the taste spicy but not overpowering, and the room note is a nice, warm campfire aroma that doesn't overstay its welcome.

And, I suppose we could all grouse about the loss of the old Murray's days, but there's probably no going back now and we simply have to decide whether we can tolerate the current Dunhill offerings or change to something else. (But, God! Wasn't that Baby's Bottom a treat?)

I like Dunhill mixtures, too. They are all quality tobaccos. SM Mellow is one English blend I will add to my regular rotation.

I note that the tin description has changed to: "A Mellow Blend of Virginia and Turkish Tobaccos - Soft Delicate Flavor"

Not having smoked any Dunhill Standard Mixture before I can't say that this is the old "Mild" or another blend entirely. However, after my dismal experience with the current MM965, I held little hope for this when I cracked the tin (only a week ago); it looked too similar to that impostor. However, one whiff of the tobacco contained therein piqued my interest. This smelled like a Dunnie - and for more like the classic 965 than the new 965 does (even if it doesn't purport to be like it.)

Lighting up I noted the similar flavor to the current 965, but here rather than being overwhelming to the point of rudeness the experience was very pleasurable. If this had been in my 965 tin I might complain it had changed but I would still like it. The Latakia here, while still the same as in 965, is in greater quantity and that I do appreciate. This is tasty, almost addictive. The Orientals are noticeable to the eye and on the tongue.

I bought the only tin I could find and it is dwindling quickly.

I almost hesitated to give this four stars as I have yet to crack my tin of Standard Mixture, but it does deserve it. I will buy more, if any shows up.

UPDATE: 10/10/12 My second tin of this was disappointingly different and NOT in a good way. This one was horribly astringent and very bitey - something I rarely encounter. I would lower the rating to two stars but an average would really be three.

As a comparatively new pipe smoker and one who is trying to venture out from the aromatics and aromatic/English blends, I find this one a nice move toward real English tobaccos. The tin note is a bit weak and just a wee bit sour. The thin ribbon cut packed well in my narrow bowl (11/16”), and burned without more than two relights to the bottom. Mild mannered all the way, starting out thin…spicier in the middle and a bit peppery toward the end where I heard a gurgle or two and the bowl got a little hotter than I like it, but that's probably due the fact that I was trying to draw enough to get some real flavor out of it. I think it's a great introduction to English blends and is now one of my favorites.

I find this a bit too mild for my liking, even EMP and Skiff are stronger than this (on the Lat side).

I got to try this with the re-introduction of Dunhill blends in England, and I bought this without looking at the contents. That done, it does pack and light easily and burns all the way down without a messy dottle. For someone trying Latakia / English blends for the first time, this might be a winner. Vitamin N content is almost negligable which for me is another dissapointment, on the plus side, a good quality leaf is used (or IMHO, wasted) but still two stars as previously stated, good for those starting out on Latakia or English forrays.

I smoked Dunhill Standard Mild for years. It's now called Standard Mellow. I find the new tobacco to be very good. The ribbon cut is a little thinner now and the color isn't quite as light yellow. I've only smoked three bowls, but find it be be of a high quality. I used to also smoke EMP because it was available in bulk and I love it. I have a new tin of that and will probably get that in bulk if it becomes available. I like to stick to one tobacco as a rule. If I switch around, I lose my ability to savor the subtle qualities of the milder English blends. Standard Mild/Mellow is subtle, but very tasty and easy on the tongue.

Traditional English taste. I found it in Bilbao in a very good price for European data and bought several tins. But I was not thrilled, so I shared! I kept one though, hopping it will improve through the process of aging. Moderate nicotine taste. A dull, dry blend of sweet Virginia-Oriental – Cyprus' Latakia, which does not make a significant presence. Rather annoying smell in the room. Ok I tried that one too. That's all.

Definitively an excellent tobacco. But I prefer its brother the medium mixture which is tastier.

My journey through orientals with light latakia officially comes to an end with this one. I've learned a lot, mostly that if a blend is going to contain any latakia, it needs to have enough to drive the blend. Squadron Leader is about as light as I can smoke.

This is certainly the most limp-wristed of the bunch, wimpier even than EMP. There was a dash of flavor but not nearly enough to keep me interested. I believe this is an Orlik-era tin. As someone else wrote, this might be a good blend for someone who just wants to smoke a pipe but doesn't particularly care what goes in it, as long as the tobacco isn't noticeable. Still, it might be a nice sample for someone who is nervous about trying a latakia blend and doesn't want to be overwhelmed by it. Then again, there are other blends more suitable.

As for me, I'll pass. Life's too short to be bored.

A tad wet and needed to dry out before it would stay lit. But then that is a good thing because it is far easier to dry out tobacco to your liking than it is to moisten it. Once dried a bit, it packed nicely and stayed lit.

Hard to describe the smoking experience. Seems to have body but the taste is neutral or flat as others put it. But then there is nothing unpleasant about this tobacco either. The tin says mild so you can't expect mouth party.

Updated April 2, 2008 After letting the can sit a little while, I can smell some creosote in it. I guess I am an impatient person sometimes... ........................

There is latakia in this? I'm pretty sure I have the new stuff. Never tried the old. I bought a tin, cracked it open and decided I like it well enough not to bother with aging it too much. Nice and mellow, packs and burns nice. I could puff on this stuff all day. I won't commit to saying it's my favorite, though.

This tobacco is very very mild (it should not be a surprise it is what the tin says it is). The tobacco is a bit milder than I would usually smoke. The flavors are subtle, and nothing really stands out, but rather all are well blended and in good balance. I could tell you that I would prefer a bit more Latakia or stronger oriental, but that would make it the Standard Mixture medium. The tobacco packs with some effort, but burns effortlessly to the very last drop. The ash is as fine as sawdust, and white as snow. So for what it is a very balanced, mild tobacco, it gets a nod from me.

D's SMM (Mild has been replaced by MELLOW) is disappearing from the italian tobacconists. One month ago I grabbed the last tin of the old production (Murray's) and found five of the newer before it's too late. I have "worked" enough on both editions at the same time, and let me say there's not so much difference, the new production is just a little sweeter. I like very much the interplay of toasted virginias, spicy orientals and the latakia is put in fair quantity; the nicotine lever is just OK for me. Like some others said - due to the medium ribbon cut, the right humidity, and the perfect balance between the components - SMM does not require many attentions, and gives you satisfaction as an all-day smoke. I found it fits very well for the hot season, when I cannot make it with more latakia-oriented products. Highly recommended

I am disappointed to say I didn't like Standard Mixture Mild much at all. My tin is one of the newer ones made by Orlick. The preparation in the tin was excellent, as you would expect of Dunhill products. The aroma was pleasant, that of dried grass plus the mustiness of Orientals. To my smell and taste, there seems to be extremely little latakia in this blend. In the tin the tobacco is light brown, with flecks of darker brown and black tobacco. In my opinion, this tobacco is much more of a Virginia with gentle condimental use of Oriental and latakia than what I would consider to be an English mixture.

In the pipe, though, I couldn't find anything related to that nice tin aroma. I found the tobacco to be flat, with very little flavor, good or bad. I tried it in a number of pipes; Mastro de Paja, Kirk Bosi, GBD, Comoy, Peterson, Falcon, and corn cob. I found a little flavor and sweetness in the Falcon, but otherwise these other pipes, all dedicated to Virginia's, yielded almost nothing in flavor.

I wanted to like this tobacco, but frankly was dissapointed and found nothing to like. I won't buy it again.

This blend isn't sweet or nutty like some Virginias, nor is it overpowering like Lat-laden English blends. That being said there's not anything particularly memorable about it. It's just tobacco.

If you're looking for an all-day smoke that simply tastes like tobacco and won't overload your taste buds as the day progresses, this might be just be it. I give it three stars on that basis and because of the very high quality of the tobacco.

This mixture is now called Mellow - presumably someone in the EU is convinced that the change in name will reduce nicotine levels and other harmful emissions and thus save the ozone layer.

This differs from the Medium only in the amount of Latakia and Mild - or Mellow - is only an indication of that. Otherwise the Dunhill characteristics of good ingredients, impeccable presentation and and adequate nicotine are all present. This belongs to the same family as Murray`s Mellow Mixture and Rattray`s No. 7.

This blend is beginning to become a particular favorite of mine. I am a big fan of English blends, but most blends seem to have a characteristic that just disgusts me after I smoke it for a while. This blend doesn't. Standard Mixture Mild has a very nice Virginia base, with a sweet wood, creamy flavor coming through with an occasional honey note. The orientals help bring out a nice spiciness to this and add much depth. The quality that probably makes me like this blend so much probably comes from the hint of Latakia in it. It has just enough smoky latakia flavor to round out the taste and make it completely satisfying. This tobacco isn't over-produced and doesn't claim to be anything fantastic. Its name even makes it average "Standard Mixture Mild," but you know what, I don't care. I find it every bit satisfying and don't tire from it like I do most blends. Not to mention that the finish is short and doesn't make you want to scrap your tongue. Good stuff!

This is just a classy classic all day English tobacco. It burns well, smokes clean. It has a nice diversity with all the notable parts coming through save the Latakia. The latakia just hides and makes this a delicious blend. The burn is quite kind to the pipe bowl and shank too. No glop!

I smoke it every day.

10/21/2013 Well, something has happened. From 1997 to 2005 I smoked Dunhill Standard Mild Mixture and I loved it. Something has changed. They call it Mellow Mixture now and over the past 8 years I have dodged it as you couldn't get it and then they come out with Mellow. I don't know why this happens, but someone else is making AGAIN and it is not the same. I will finish this can, but no more. Too many other great tobaccos to smoke.

This is a very fine light Latakia English. Sweet toasty Virginia, tangy Turkish, and just a whisper of Latakia.

It reminds me a bit of Wilke's No.10, which is also excellent. If your tastebuds are used to heavier blends, you probably won't even notice the Latakia at all.

As Orlik already produces this blend for Dunhill, I don't think the recent shakeup will change this blend a bit.

Definitely a good starter in the world of English Mixtures. It has the sweetness of Virginias and the smokiness of orientals in just the right proportions. It should be puffed gently and slowly, as too much haste will result in some tongue bite. This will be minimised though by packing it quite tightly - its fine cut will allow this and stay lit quite nicely. A well-balanced smoke, it's not too strong, too hot, too sweet or too sour. The room note takes me back to the pipe-smoking men of my childhood, when it seemed to me that all tobaccos smelt like this one.

Well, count me in as a fan of this tobacco. If you are looking for an English where the latakia and the orientals are used as a condiment, and the flavor of fine Virginias comes through with no harshness or bite, this should do the trick. This would be my first recommendation as a transition to an English blend from Virginas, Va./perique, burleys or aromatics. The operative word here is "mild." But, all the components are there in the smoke, and the tobaccos are of top quality. This is also an excellent tobacco if your are reading or your mind is otherwise occupied. Although it has no spectacular uniqueness, it does provide fine tobacco flavors. Well recommended. Paddy.

The description on the tin says it all for me,"Virginia and Turkish, soft and mild".It is all that and more. The Virginia does seem to have a bit of the English scented plug smell and taste, although it doesn't seem offensive and well,I tend to like it.

I didn't know there was any Latakia in this blend, and if there is it's hard to tell as the Virginia's do seem to be first in taste and Turkish coming in softly behind.

At first light the blend reminded me more of a Dunhill red, Cigarette. The tobacco melowed out after lighting and became soft, mellow, and sweet with that good Turkish leaf ever so good and mistic. I think I'll wear a Pith helmet when I smoke this and try a British accent. I really really like this real English blend. Yum!!!

As a new pipe smoker (long time cigar smoker) I?ve had difficulty with some of the sweeter tobaccos (Virginia blends) I?ve tried. As I?ve also had some difficulty with the stronger English blends as they tend to be more complex than even the strongest or darkest cigars (VSG, ISOM, etc...). This tobacco is the first to become a regular smoke. A light English without an overpowering Latakia and none of the Virginia sweetness. Who knows as my pallet adjusts to the complexities of pipe tobacco i may just find this a little soft, but for now it's almost perfect.

I tried this tobacco shortly after finishing an 8 oz package of 965 and was pleasantly surprised by how tasty it was in comparison. Standard mix mild seems to contain a lot less latakia and more on the turkish and orientals which subdue the smokiness and bring out the spicyness. One of the things I like about this and most Dunhill blends are the ability to smoke with few re-lites and also the fine grey/white ash left over. I can't help feeling satisfied knowing I'm smoking some of the finest tobacco made on a middle class income!
