HU Tobacco Edward G.

(3.81)
Robinson played the notorious gangster and anti-hero in "film noir" movies and was a fascinating figure in American cinema of the 1930s and 1940s. Gaining fame as the power-hungry slob and gangster, Edward G. Robinson led the life of a sensitive art enthusiast and avid pipe smoker. In its varieties and contrasts Edward G. Robinson's life shows similarities to "Edward G Ready Rubbed Flake". Gaining a tartly sweet character, the dark and pressed Red Virginias of assorted provenances have been finished with a little perique and brown Virginia. A touch of Kentucky tobacco gives the blend that extra something. "Edward G…Ready Rubbed Flake" captivates by its natural sweetness, which makes a mark on it without dominating. It is a blend just as distinctive, complex, interesting and multi-faceted as Edward G. Robinson's life and work.
Notes: The new tins also mention some black cavendish, as well as some Orientals/Turkish on it.

This is a coin cut and loose broken flake mixture. I think it does taste a little like Director's Cut, and the coins are the same as DC's coins. I don't know what the sweet flavoring is (sugar?), but it's exceptionally mild, and doesn't intrude on tobacco taste. This is a little more sweet and sour than DC is, with maybe a little more tartness and malt, too. The perique is noticeable as it adds nice spice, earth, plum, and raisin notes to the woody, earthy, slightly floral, nutty Kentucky, both of which are supporting players. The earthy, tangy dark fruity, tart and tangy citrusy, woody and grassy red, brown and bright Virginias form the base of the blend. Depending upon how you break up the coins (if you do), and add the broken flake, the flavors can change a little as you smoke down the bowl. I prefer to stack the coins with some loose broken flake at the top and bottom. No chance of bite. The strength and taste levels are medium. The nic-hit is a step past the center of mild to medium. Burns cool and clean at a slightly slow pace with no dull or weak spots. Requires a few relights, and leaves virtually no moisture in the bowl. Has a short lived, pleasant after taste, and room note. Can be an all day smoke.

I don't know why they named this after Edward G. Robinson, but it's nothing like the American version, which is mildly aromatic. It doesn't matter. This stands on its own.

Just as I am mourning the loss of Mc Clelland and finding no Virginias on line to buy along comes HU tobacco . I was gifted a can of Director's Cut and really loved it so I thought to try some other HU's .

Edward G is simply an adventure into really first class tobacco . Using high quality Virginias , both dark and lite with a little perique and Kentucky they have created a product that I can only call world class . A fine looking broken flake with a unique tin note greets the lucky owner . I thought the moisture level ideal . An easy to pack broken flake helps with a one shot lite to get you going . The smoke is smooth and refined and quite complex. I can only liken the taste to port wine . It was similar to my first bowl of Mc Clelland 40th anniversary in it's depth of flavor . The Virginias are the major player, sweet and deep , absent the hay like quality it can sometimes have .The Kentucky adds depth and a little spice but it was hard to pick up the perique . The cut facilitates a slow burn so my first smoke was over 40 min in an exel Barling . It must be remembered that the virginia used here is Empire Virginia and tastes somewhat different than our domestic varieties. I have been smoking for over 50 years and there are few tobaccos that I can compare to this . I look forward to trying the entire HU line . The only problem is that this tobacco is only sold in Europe but it is worth the effort . A FINAL NOTE... Storage in the original can , even in a zip lock bag is not ideal as the tobacco will lose flavor that way . Only a locked glass jar or a ball jar will seal in the flavor for this delicate rose .

This is what happens when a skilled blender gets his hands on some quality leaf: a superb end product.

The emphasis is on the word "blend" here. You can see easily enough that there are different component elements when opening the tin, even different cuts with the occasional coin mixed in with the remainder of the coarse rub.

The nose betrays the sweetness of things to come and ah, the taste. Layer upon layer, with no single part seeking to dominate, yet each making themselves known in a sweet, yet tangy and very smooth mix. Cool too and easy to sip, with a total burn away to nothing but the finest grey ash. Absolutely first class in every respect.

Highly recommended.

Due to limited availability, I consumed almost 20 grams straight from the tin, plus approximately 25 grams after a year of simple maturation in the mason jar. My general evaluation under the first half of this limited consumption was only two stars.

Now I feel that most of the fundamental tastes right now are sharper now. I continuously taste the "floral essences" from the first fire to the very last draws. Supposedly it's due to the amount and the quality of burley tobacco in it. Just fantastic. Perique is present, yet, I can't say that it plays a significant role. Maybe it is only included for decreasing the sweetness of the burley.

The blend is enjoyable, burns very slow, no tongue bites whatsoever. An all-day blend, maybe, but for me, it was just once in a week blend. Anyways, this is a blend of high quality, which includes the best of every component. It definitely deserves a straight 4 star!

Well, another excellent example of sweet & sour & slightly smoky tobacco blend from Hans Wiedeman. Quite similar to Director's Cut from the same blender, I consider Edward G. as the meaty big brother of Director's Cut. Sweet raisins, fig, and spices accompanied by woody & nutty Kentucky. I was hardly able to detect Burley. Therefore I assume it's presence is required for the additional nicotine punch. Usually, Virginias play the role of the catalyzer inside a blend; however, with Edward G. I am 100% sure every other tobacco leaf is included there to boost the flavor and presence of sweet & sour Virginias.

Lets cut to the chase, so far 3 out of 3. HU Tobacco is doing a GREAT job at catering the most exquisite blends to the pipe community. Well, at least they are to my liking, and I highly recommend it to anyone who seeks complex, yet smooth and immensely enjoyable blends.

I just finished a small sample of this one that was given to me a few years ago from a forum friend who I met up with while on vacation. This sample was maybe four bowls and I have had them sparingly, because each one was so darned good.

This is also one of those type of reviews that is hard to do as I impulsively want to give it four stars as it was so good, but I know that I honestly have not had a chance to truly get to know this blend yet. It has been a while since I have had director's cut, but would put this one a little below Director's Cut to my own personal taste as I found the latter to be a little more earthy sweet to my tastes.

But to give this one three stars also does not feel right as everyone thus far has given it four stars and it is produced by one of the top blending talents in the world today. Also, I really don't know when I will get to trying this one again as I am seemingly swimming in tobacco at present.

As for describing this one a little more, it is a fine VaBurPer. incredible balanced between the sweet Virginia, spicy perique and nutty and earthy Kentucky. If you like high quality blends of this composition HOTW, Strang, etc. . ., you will undoubtedly like this blend.

So I highly recommend this blend, but if you are ordering from HU and are between this one and Director's Cut, I would opt for Director's Cut first.

The Edward G. ready rubbed flake is a middle to dark brown tobacco. The tin smell is sweet, malty and a bit sour. The tobacco is easily to pack and the tobacco burns very well. The taste of the Edward G. is natural sweet. I feel the taste malty without beeing too intrusive. After a few minutes the malty taste turns into a spicy taste with chocolate tones of the burley grades. In the background I notice the kentucky grades and the light fruitness of the perique and the virginia/perique curlies. The different tobaccos are so well balanced that the Edward G. is not boring sweet. No, the Edward G. is a tobacco with many different notes of taste. The Edward G. has a similary to Marlin Flake, but is much more complex and not so dominant sweet. In my personally range, the Director`s Cut is my number one, because the DC is a bit more complex in taste. But the Edward G. is highly recommended for VAPER lovers who likes the darker tobaccos. Maybe for lovers of Marlin Flake or SG Full Virginia Flake/St. James Flake. With the time the conclusion is almost boring, but once again two thumbs up for this HU blend 🙂

I am just smoking this for the first time as Hans sent me a sample of it along with my order. The tin will read as this: Edward G.Robinson played the notorious gangster and anti-hero in "film noir" movies and was a fascinating figure in American cinema of the 1930s and 1940s. Gaining fame as the power-hungry slob and gangster, Edward G. Robinson led the life of a sensitive art enthusiast and avid pipe smoker. In its varieties and contrasts Edward G. Gaining a tartly sweet character, the dark and pressed Red Virginias of assorted provenances have been finished with a little Perique and Brown Virginia. It is a blend just as distinctive, complex, interesting and multi-faceted as Edward G. Robinson's life and work. …distinctive, sweet, fascinating

Hans himself likens this blend to Marlin Flake but he would be short-selling himself in this matter: Edward G stands head and shoulder above it. But I can appreciate the likeness. His blend has the sharpness of Perique, the sweetness of the different Virginia's, the smoothing properties of very good Burley and some added spice by the Kentucky leaf. And it contains Vaper curlies, 15% to be exact, tying it to another newly introduced tobacco of his, Director's Cut. But that one has 55% of these curlies. It all melds into a beautiful and creamy smoke, mild and very full in taste, with a heady but not overpowering Perique finish. Seriously recommended to lovers of a natural and creatively conceived tobacco.

Bag not is sweet and musky some coco scents. A beautiful mixture of coins flake and ribbon. moisture was prefect in my sample bag. I rubbed mine out. Packs very easily. Upon first few puffs I found a plethora of flavors too many to distinguish but all were quite wonderful. Definitely perique but not too much. Super smooth smoke burns a bit hot if puffed hard. This blend provides much more flavor if puffed very slowly. At the halfway point it smooths out even more and seems to pick up a slightly sweet malt flavor and coco. The very interesting thing about this blend is it seems to rotate flavors while being smoked. Some perique then some nice smooth Virginia with Kentucky to give it more fullness. Highly recommended. HU does not disappoint. Nic hit was mild to medium. Easily an all day smoke.

Roaming through the pipe smokers paradise at Lohmar Pipe Show I stopped by at Hans Wiedemann's HU-Tobacco booth. I wasn't sure whether to again buy a tin of Director's Cut or to try the Edward G. Following Hans' advice I grabbed the Edward G. After a few bowls I'm happy I chose the Edward G. Imho it's close to the Director's Cut, but has its own charme and is more bold.

According to my tin this also has some black cavendish, as well as some Orientals in it, which I find to be within the realms of possibility as there's some black and bright-beige leaf in the mix. The tin note is delightful: Spicy and earthy, slightly fruity and sour with undertones of whole-rye bread and maybe some tart nuts. A mixture of ribbons, flake pieces and curly-cuts - a joy to handle and pack! A tad moist it may need some drying time depending on your personal preference.

In the pipe I perceive it as some kind of 'big brother' to the Director's Cut (DC). Whilst the DC is mellow-spicy and delicately sweet, the Edward G. is more zesty, spicy and full-bodied. The Perique offers rich pepper and spice, as well as a mild plum note in the background. The combination of Virginias, Burley and Kentucky result in a full-bodied melange of rich earthiness and mild woodsy notes with a slight nuttiness. Paired with a mellow and mild sweetness from the Virginias, which also pair very well with the Perique's fruity tones. There may be a hint of Orientals present, as I do perceive a mild dryness I associate with turkish leaf.

I'd categorize this as a Va/Bur blend if I had to... but that category falls short of describing what this really is. It's rich in flavors, bold with a decent strength and the addition of Perique and Kentucky not only adds body and spice to the blend, but make for a complex, full-bodied smoke that's quite unique. Rather spicy, tart and hearty than sweet, it is nose-tingling and its peppery spice pleasantly tickles your palate.

I'll highly reccomend this blend to both lovers of Va/Burs and Va/Pers, who look for a sturdy and bold-tasting blend with depth and rich flavors! This is on its way of taking a place in my rotation.
