HU Tobacco Joschi's Oriental Sunrise

(3.36)
Joschi’s Oriental Sunrise. Our Joschi is a calm but jovial type. He doesn‘t much like to raise attention to his person, but he‘s always present. Joschi prefers natural or slightly aromatized tobaccos. This classic oriental blend is just after his fancy. A creamy Virginia broken flake forms the basis. It has been mixed with equal parts of Louisiana perique, Kentucky burley and Samson Oriental, which breathe a whole new life into the Virginia. The flavored tobaccos, especially the very expressive Samson Oriental, make for a wonderfully uncomplicated and yet interesting blend which develops its unique taste without the use of additional flavorings. This is how good tobacco can taste on its own. A blend for the calm and quiet bon vivant as pleasure needs no words.

The Orientals are woody, earthy, a little floral and spicy, dry, herbal, buttery sweet and slightly sour, and are prominent, though this is not an Oriental-bomb as this blend is well balanced. The Kentucky burley has a slight pistachio flavor and light, light sweetness with a very slight earthiness and wood to it. It's as light a Kentucky burley flavor as can be and yet, it compliments the other flavors nicely in the background. The perique is very mildly spicy with some raisins, plums and figs, and plays almost at the same level as the burley does. The grassy, woody, earthy, tart and tangy citrusy, lightly tangy dark fruity Virginia sets the base for the other ingredients. Has a slightly more than a mild nic-hit. The strength is just short of the center of mild to medium, while the taste is a step past that mark. Won't bite or get harsh. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with a fairly consistent taste. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a pleasant, lightly lingering after taste and slightly stronger room note. An all day, creamy smoke that especially goes well with tea and coffee. I suggest a big bowl to get the nuance of the varying flavors.

Outstandingly good Oriental-forward - or rather "dancing around the Orientals" - blend, with perfect balance and a genuine, pleasant character! Whilst the Oriental takes a bit of the lead, all the components are so well blended, that this mixture whispers you another story in every puff.

But let's start with the tin note... the tin note is spicy, midly fruity with little sweetness and an ethereal side to it. Joschi's comes perfectly conditioned to be smoked right out of the tin (I like my tobacco on the dry/drier side, this only needs 10-15 mins of drying to be "crispy").

Best to be enjoyed in wide bowls, so all the components have enough room to smolder and tell you their storys. It starts out with a rich Oriental spice. Spicy, dry, ethereal, woodsy and slightly sour and maybe some hints of tart nuts. Virginia, Perique and Kentucky form a wonderful base for this blend and for the Orientals to shine. The Kentucky gives this blend some body, earth and underscores the nutty qualities (which are rather mild), whilst the Periique enriches the Orientals spice by adding some pleasant pepper and fruity edges. The Virginias sweet, fruity and earthy qualities fit perfectly into the taste-profile.

This isn't a "Aroma-Bomb", it's rather discreet in taste and apt to the description of Joschi, who lends this blend his name. calm and quiet... But if you listen carefully, you'll find that he whispers so many interesting storys and rewards you with a most calming smoke. To my taste this is best to be enjoyed when being thoughtful and attentive.. if you do so, you'll find a pleasing and soothing smoke with pleasant complexity and many, fine nuances to be discovered.

A true gem, that occupies a safe place in my rotation! Oriental-forward, with body and tasty nuances. Spicy, fruity, sweet and ethereal. A 4/4 star blend that quickly grew to be a favorite of mine!

This one became my go-to tobacco instantly - if I'm not in the mood for aromatics, I smoke 'Joschi's'.

No surprises here - you get all the characteristics of each tobacco used: creamy virginia, nutty burley, stingy perique, aetherical samsoun. (Only highest quality tobaccos were used!) What's special about this blend: you can actually taste all tobaccos used! Yet it adds up to a very harmonic and pleasant smoking experience: a simple but very honest tobacco blend. Highly recommended!

Actually, this blend is very similar to HU Flanagan. However, instead of Bulgarian orientals, we have throat tickling Samsun tobacco with a lot of smoke. Samsun tobacco is a bit like that. Compared to other Turkish tobaccos, Samsun has a less sour, sweeter taste, slightly spicy, and quite woody. Famous for its unique aroma and flavor, this tobacco, when burned, provides tons of smoke clouds. Unfortunately, the scent during and after smoking is quite repulsive and persistent. If you could smell yourself probably you would want to jump into the nearest creek.

Unlike Flanagan, the components of Joschi's Oriental Sunrise are very well blended and married, so it tastes whole and full-bodied to my palate. And for the very same reasons, it is not easy to tell which tobaccos are used in the blend. I could distinguish Samsun leaf only because of the plenty of smoke it emits and the familiar stench it leaves in my smoking room. Ah ah, every cigarette-smoking Turkish student has tried Samsun cigarettes at least once! And probably had a conversation about number 216 packets 😂

If you read my Flanagan post, then you may remember. I had liked it but, compared to other HU tobaccos Flanagan is not my first choice. There are numerous offerings, such as Edward G. or Louisiana Broken, which I liked more. However, none of those HU blends were Oriental forward. Now I have tried Joschi's, I have to change this discourse because the characteristic sourness and spice bomb of Turkish orientals are subdued here. Samsun leaf lifted this blend to another level. When you light this baccy for the first time, it makes you say ah here! That is a typical HU blend! Yet, through 10 minutes of smoking, it changes to this full-bodied, balanced, delicious Samsun forward tobacco. (A little clarification here. I believe there was not a large amount of Samsun in Joschi's Oriental Sunrise. But, the ratio Mr. Wideman used was enough to make it Samsun forward).

Let me Wrap it all, very woody, slightly earthy, a bit nutty, neither sour nor sweet blend. Excellent burning qualities and stays lit for a long time. Cool and dry smoke from the start to the last sip. Pretty suitable for smoking all day long. But beware, you may need to increase the number of laundry days! 😅

PS. Huge thanks to Mr. Sadan Gungorur. Without him, I would not be able to taste any of these delicious HU offerings. He generously gifted HU blends from his cellar, which I am grateful for.

Personal allday favourite #1 by this blender. Solid smoke, nice broken flake, perique just enough to spice up not to be unbearable. Burns cool throught the bowl, tones of dry fruit, bit of caramel, subtle sourness, little vanilla-like taste. Orientals give their special aroma to the blend, throught the smoke nice overall, not too heavy, not too light. I can smoke a bowl through any time of the day, moring muge, after lunch, evening bowl with pleasure.

Wow!! I am excited with this tobacco. Joschi's Oriental Sunrise is not what I expected judging from the title, an Oriental forward blend, but it's a fantastic natural tasting tobacco nevertheless. It has a wonderful medium strength that allows one to smoke it all-day without fatigue, and what's more without any tongue bite and with plenty of taste so as not to get bored. Cannot place it in any category, i.e. Va/Per, Oriental or anything else. To me however the leader here as far as taste is concerned is the Burley with the other tobaccos adding nuances, body, flavors.

It is a mixed cut, consisting of broad cut ribbons and rather finely cut broken flakes. Colors range from bright to medium brown to dark brown. Tin note has the fruitiness of a Va/Per without much of Virginia tanginess.

It has good moisture to pack and light and it only needs a few relights and smokes fairly dry. Strength is on the mild side of medium and taste-wise what I get is mostly a nutty Burley with a fair amount of sweetness which might be from the Virginias. It is juicy smoke, it shines when kept smouldering where a succulent, sweet nuttiness comes forth and it is quite complex and not fully homogenised in the sense that with every puff you do not get exactly the same notes. I am not sure I can taste the Samsun, nor the Perique but this is not just a plain Burley with some Virginias, it is much more complex than that, so I guess their contribution is significant even if I cannot tell what exactly it is.

The level of nicotine and the strength of this tobacco are one more of its assets, kept at a mostly medium level they allow one to smoke without fatigue. It burns slow, it tastes like pure natural tobacco, what more can one ask for?

This is not only a four star tobacco for me but I see it becoming one of my favourites.

Correction: After smoking McClelland's Black Sea Sokhum, which is a strain of Samsun seed, described as "almost cigar-like, rich and deep and mellow", I can now see more clearly the affinities with Joschi's and it's Oriental character. The Oriental leaf here (Samsun) is not as sour, loamy and tangy as Basma let's say, yet it still has an Oriental taste but also a cigar-like nuttiness which I mistook for Burley. So Joschi's is after all an Oriental forward blend and my initial impression was mistaken...

Joschi's is simply another outstanding tobacco from HU . The broken flake is attractive and fragrant in the can , the orientals give off an exotic scent . The broken flake format makes it easy to pack and lite . The taste is clearly oriental forward but in combination with the Virginia , Kentucky and a touch of burley this becomes a truly great smoke . Surprisingly this is not really a complex blend because the taste remains the same through out . The excellent quality of this blend is that Hans gets them all working together in perfect balance. Although I would still consider it a oriental forward mixture I believe that the other tobaccos are present to bring out the flavor of the orientals . I could compare it to HU Flannigan , a flake offering , which is more direct in it's presentation of the oriental tobaccos . This blend goes very well with a single malt scotch and can be enjoyed any time of day.

Excellent selection, but it is way too mild to interest me. Nice virginia fundamental, the rest is a not exciting nuance. More like a "Va Light" smoke to me.

Joschi's Oriental Sunrise is a fitting tribute to the blender's friend Joschi. The blend is subtle, but interesting just like its namesake. The Virginias and Samson Orientals provide an exquisite floral note that is underlined by a dash of spicy perique, with a lingering earthiness as an afternote. A pleasurable and versatile blend for all occasions.

3.5/4 - try this blend with a German pilsner like Radeberger, it's a match made in heaven.

The Joschi`s Oriental Sunrise is a very nice, mild and naturally blend. The sweet virginias and the oriental leaf are well balanced. So, the Joschi is a complex blend without tounge bite. The burley and the kentucky tobaccos are only in the background and gives this blend a nice body. I like this tobacco during the whole day because this blend needs no attention. Maybe in the evening or for a concentrating smoke, the Joschi`s is for me a bit too light. But this blend is recommended for smokers who like naturally tobacco without a high nicotin level. A very well made tobacco!
