De La Concha Bull's Eye

(4.00)
This unique tobacco is presented in spun disks and is a classic Virginia/Perique mixture. The outer layers of the disk contain a blend of ripe, rich Virginia tobaccos that are then spiced with Louisiana perique. In the center of the disk is a small drop of unflavored black cavendish that smooths out the taste. The result is a perfect choice for those who enjoy pure tobacco taste in a non-English type tobacco. Sweet/Spice…a classic blend…cool smoking and long lasting. Bulls Eye Blend is all of that and more.

Sliced spun tobacco, top quality. Virginia, perique, a touch of unflavoured cavendish to slow down the Virginia.

If you love Wessex`s Brigade Sovereign Curly Cut, because it is just a shade less sweet and a lot easier to smoke than Escudo, you will love this Bull's Eye, which costs only a tiny fraction of the ludicrously overpriced Dunhill De Luxe Navy Rolls.

The red virginia is wonderfully toasty, but made safe by the cavendish, which doesn't taste like anything, it's just there to protect your tongue. The perique is very present (yeay!) and real. The coin-like sliced twist, which I barely rub, burns slow and easy. I loved this.

Before being absorbed by Davidoff, the old De La Concha pipe shop in New York offered some very nice blends and Bull's Eye was my favorite when I ordered their line up of goodies over a decade ago. It was an Escudo style blend with spun discs of Bright and Perique that had the classic VaPer presentation. Not as full as Escudo, and more tart, but still a very nice smoke. I remember transferring my bag to an old ball style Mason Jar and trying it again in 2014, almost 10-years after getting it. The leaf was very dark, very rich and full, and the Perique was really a player. I found this one to be as good as any VaPer disc I'd ever loaded up in a pipe, probably due to all the aging. Wonderful stuff!

Large (1.5 inch or larger) coins of first quality leaf. Wonderful aroma in pouch. Eulenburg review on taste exactly mirrors my experience. A nice touch is that de la Concha packages in premium, thick poly bags (8oz and 16 oz in canisters). De la Concha is probably better known to cigar smokers than pipe smokers but they have always been a stockist of high quality pipes and pipe tobaccos. I know some of their mixtures such as Pieces of Eight have be offered since at least since the 1970s. This mixture can be compared to Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake; based on appearance, however, probably not a relabeling of that mixture. Four stars based on quality of tobaccos and preparation.
