B&B Tobacconists Doc Piedmont- We’ve combined Red Virginia, a mildly flavored toasted black cavendish and a light amount of Perique to get one of the most enjoyable all day non-aromatic smokes on the market. This tobacco is named for the U.S.S. Piedmont, a destroyer tender. One of our close friends served on her and we wanted to honor both ship and pal.

Given the ingredients I wouldn't have expected to see such a dark blend. It comes from the Perique and Cavendish, of course. The predominant color is a nice, dark brown, with only flecks of lighter colors I would expect from the Virginia. Judging by the taste I'm guessing that the Virginias are Reds, which add to the darker, richer flavor. My sample contained some nice, shorter ribbons as well as smaller pieces. The pouch aroma is very much that of the Cavendish, though I can't quite decide what is the flavoring used on the Cavendish preparation; it is fairly light. The tobacco itself is relatively moist, so for my smoking it needs a fair bit of drying. Once dried, the tobacco packed easily into my pipes. The initial light brought out the sweetness and flavoring of the Cavendish, which stays in the driver's seat through the bowl. However, as the blend settles in to a nice, slow smoke the Virginia's richness and nuance comes through, as does the occasional tang and fruity spiciness of the Perique. At times the fogginess of the Perique and the flavoring of the Cavendish are almost as one. There is a smooth creaminess to the flavor. The Virginias provide some nice high notes while the Perique and Cavendish provide some depth, rounding the smoke out into a good, relaxing break from the usual, unflavored VaPers I generally smoke. The tobacco burns extremely well, and I think that one would have to put in an effort to get a real bite from it, making it suitable as an all-day smoke. It burns down to a somewhat heavy ash some of which is lighter in nature and some which is quite dark. As a regular VaPer smoker I had to reach a bit to consider Doc Piedmont a VaPer, however. Rather, it strikes me more as a Cavendish which is muted and mellowed by the VaPer it is blended with. I would consider it a sort of cross-over type of blend which would be a great introduction for the aromatic smoker to the delights of a VaPer. It is also a nice change of pace tobacco for anyone who smokes unflavored blends, though I don't see it as something I would regularly seek. Still, an interesting and pleasing smoke.

This is a VaPer with a twist, it has a little black canvendish added to the mix, not the sweet kind but the natural. It makes for a very interesting blend that is very tart and great with a cup of coffee or tea. It claims to have just a little perique in it but my palette picks up the perique as dominant in the blend. The VA adds it's sweetness and the black cavendish basically gives it body and rounds it out. It is basically a ribbon cut but with short rough edged flaky pieces throughout and it is mostly a dark deep brown in color with a little lighter and darker here and there in the blend. It's pouch aroma is very peaty and a little spicy and it comes a little moist so I like to dry it out a little before smoking. It does load easily into the pipe and lights up right off the bat, with a little rise but a touch of the finder settles it in just fine. It burns as a nice slow burn, and creates a very tart, spicy, creamy smoke. It burns down to a dark grey ash and will burn all the way down if smoked slow to a fluffy ash. The tartness and spiciness of this blend can fool you into thinking it is giving you tongue bite if smoked fast but it's really not, and I like a drink with it. It is quite tasty as a morning smoke with coffee or tea. It does not get stronger as it burns down the taste is quite consistant, but if smoked really fast it can gain a little bitterness towards the bottom of the bowl. I like this blend and the more I smoke it the more I find little subtle nuances with it. I recommend trying this blend, it's very different but still appealing to a VaPer lover.
