After years of trying dozens of brands and mixtures I became a dedicated Aromatic smoker. I love Mira Mattix and I’ve never looked back at anything else. I smoke for flavor, Confort, and pleasure which I only get from aromatics. That said I have found the Black Cavendish is the one I love the most! My favorite for sometime now he’s been Green River black cabinet preferably with some vanilla. I find this black cabinet to be the more chocolate version of the other. And I love it to death! No wonder I was so famous and beloved in the 1970’s! Out of the bag it has the perfect level of moisture, the smell from the bag doesn’t really tell you what it’s gonna taste like but you can tell that is good. I get a consistent chocolate cocoa flavor from it from the beginning to the end of the ball. It burns evenly from the top of the bowl to the bottom with no re-lights. Like every aromatic I’ve smoked it smokes best if slowly drawn small slow paths and you get the full flavor that way. No no matter what you do you cannot get this tobacco to bite. I find the flavor and quality of this pipe tobacco to be equal with Cornell and Diehl’s Vanilla Green River Black Cavendish. There’s a lot of black cabinet is out there that cost pennies compared to some others and I find they’re all good in their own way. Snobs be damned. If you’re a pipe smoker like me who has been smoking since 1970, or anytime really, and you smoke what you like and what tastes good to you as opposed to just following the crowd, buy a bag of this and try it out. If you love aromatics like I do you’ll fall in love with this stuff. I know I have.

Tobacco snobs need not read this review. There is nothing that especially stands out about this Black Cavendish offering and no special claims are made by the producer of it. This just a very simple, basic, old school Black Cavendish. I'm not regularly an aromatic smoker but I enjoy an occasional straight bowl of old fashioned black Cavendish and I like this one. Open the bag and it's very black and has a nice pleasing aroma. The smoke is smooth and doesn't bite. As the bowl goes on it will need a relight or two. It's mild enough but has some very pleasant, sweet but not cloying mild vanilla/molasses like flavor and the aroma is the classic "favorite uncle's" pipe tobacco aroma, which of course draws smiles and compliments, especially from the ladies. This blend won't ghost your pipe like many aromatics do, no soap or strange flavors here. It's inexpensive and if kept properly EA Carey BC will stay at perfect moisture level for years. In fact I hadn't smoked this stuff in three years and it was as if I had just received it. This is the type of stuff that got many of us smoking a pipe to begin with years ago. So indulge yourself once in a while in this guilty pleasure, one you wouldn't dare to tell about to your snobby, aficionado friends who rhapsodize over their favorite expensive Va-Pers, stoved blah, blahs and the like while they complain about PG and ketchup. I won't tell.

Carey's - Black Aromatic.

The smell of this leads be to believe that there is something other than the addition of Prune/Plum, something sweet, maybe Molasses or Honey? The whole of the mixture is very dark, mind you what should I expect as it is a Black Cavendish blend! There is no problem with it being too moist or too damp, it's perfectly hydrated. The pieces of tobacco are fairly small, not microscopic but definitely what I would describe as delicate!

The size of the pieces makes for easy lighting, a match will more than suffice for this, a jet lighter really would not be a requisite! The addition of plum is about the same as University Flake, for me though it becomes more apparent as the pipe burns down. The nicotine is mild in this, it is exactly as you would expect from a black Cav' blend. The burn with this is quite good if you don't neglect your puffing but it does tend to go out quickly if it's not puffed often enough so I don't think this would be good to smoke during conversation as if it was put aside to chat it would become extinguished almost imminently! The temperature of the smoke is more towards the cool side, that combined with zero bite makes for a nice smoke to relax with. The room note is quite fruity and the room doesn't become too filled with smoke either.

This is a pleasant enough blend but it scores three stars as it lacks that 'stand out' quality it needs for four stars!

EA Carey's Classic Black blend is a mixture of Burley with two toasted Black Cavendish. The Cavendish gives "full" flavor to the blend; and a "Room Note" that at times was "Tolerable", as such it has become a "porch-smoke". This blend I found to be "wet", and needed "relighting" to finish. I live in Tacoma-Washington; with it's "cool and foggy" weather, and can only rate it as two star.

This is indeed a classic Black Cavendish, with a pleasant aroma and not too much artificial flavour. I rated the strength Medium as the cut and casing makes for a fairly dense pipeful, otherwise I would have rated it medium-mild.

BTW, I rate most tobaccos I have tried recently as mild to medium, as I remember much stronger tobaccos from earlier times, such as Three Nuns (as it was 30 years ago!), so bear in mind my bias.

Smooth, not much tongue-bite. I found it lacking in any strong character or spiciness, but a very pleasant smoke.
