Watch City Cigar Boston Blackie

(3.33)
A delicious vanilla flavored aromatic.
Notes: Note from Watch City- This is NOT a Watch City Tobacco. It is BCA by Lane Limited. When Watch City opened in the 1990’s veteran pipe smokers would come in and ask for “Boston Blackie”, “Faneuil Hall” or “Harvard Square” (Lane’s BCA, 1Q, And RLP-6 respectively). These were the names used by the venerable C.B. Perkins shops for the Lane blends. To avoid Confusion, Watch City adopted these names for the Lane blends.

Coal black ribbons and a bag aroma of mostly whiskey with a hint of vanilla. This is no substitute for basic BCA as the vanilla is subtle. Wet in the bag, this needed a bit of drying time to hold a light and to focus the flavors. But too dry was not good.

Whiskey flavor up front and vanilla well to the rear, following the bag aroma. Very little tobacco taste, but that's not why people buy black Cavendish blends anyway. I didn't smoke the entire 2 oz and it'll probably take me a year to finish this up, but I enjoyed it for the most part. Wasn't as well conceived to my tastes as the Old Bastard (also whiskey flavored) but this seems to be geared to a more aromatic audience. No goop in this one, even though it started off very wet. Flavor lasted all down the bowl - didn't get harsh at the bottom. And no chemical flavors. Ernie Quint doesn't make nearly as many blends as the Big Two (Lane's and Sutliff) but manages to avoid the pitfalls of those blenders, even when making a basic aromatic that pleases others. This one will also please the smoker if the flavoring works for them.

This is a very nice, classic vanilla aromatic. The tobacco is all black so it appears to be all cased/flavored cavendish. Smells fantastic in the bag which isn't a big surprise. Very moist. Burns with a nice sweet-burnt taste. I had no problem at all with tongue bite or keeping the tabacky lit.

Personally, English blends are my favorite but I definitely recommend this for smokers who like a quality aromatic.

I grabbed 2oz of this the other day at Watch City Cigar and have been smoking it pretty steadily since. This is a great aromatic. A prominent but not overdone vanilla/whiskey topping over a high quality Black Cavendish. The tobacco comes a bit moist, or at least mine did, but I wouldn't recommend drying it. You'll need to relight it once or twice probably but that's preferable to losing some of the flavor which I think is what would happen if you were to dry it.

All in all a very nice aro, great for casual puffing, especially around non-smokers. It's on my list now.
