There are times when our blending operator adds the wrong ingredient, sometimes we have tobacco left from trying new blends, and sometimes we have other samples. When we have accumulated enough tobacco to make a batch we blend it all together and sell it at a reduced price. Our Bargain tobacco is not always available. When it is sold out, some time may pass before the next batch will be made and it will not be like previous batches but the tobacco will be priced very economically.

Actually I was the one who posted this blend on this site. And my logic was simple - I wanted to know other people's experience with this this type of blend. From the description it is obvious that a consumer will not get the same blend on the regular basis - as it is ever changing.

My frustration stemmed from trying to find out what other people thought of it. To me - part of the 'fun' is the surprise of getting a tobacco and giving it a spin and either loving or hating it. Whether you like it or not is entirely up to your palate and taste.

Being said - I found my sample of Bargain Blend to completely enjoyable. The pouch aroma smelled like Swiss Chocolate and the taste - was a mild, not overly complex tobacco. It had no bite and left no pipe funk in the bowl or in the mouth. The notes although rather monochromatic were of a cocoa, vanilla and blackberry and I assume the room note was the same.

If you are on a budget - don't mind an ever changing blend - want a lot of tobacco that is quality without busting your wallet - then this is the blend for you. For what it is - I give it 4 stars.

This is kind of a fun little game. Like a grab bag sort of thing. It is also pretty ingenious of them to be giving free samples of this blend. It is not something I would have purchased on my own, but now that I have tried it I would certainly throw a few ounces in with another order just to play the game.

The first thing to note here is the quality product. Whether a Virginia, English, or aromatic blend, the tobacco from a quality supplier comes off as just that. Before I even loaded my pipe it became apparent to me that we were dealing with a quality product. The moisture content was perfect. The cut was very nice as it packed and burned well.

The taste was very interesting. I do believe the whole anonymous nature of this blend makes it very fun to smoke. My pouch had the smell of cherry and other fruits. If the label had said cherry, I would not have thought twice about it. Due to the anonymity of the blend, I spent the whole bowl trying to diagnose the different flavors that were popping up. It was a fun little game.

I believe there was some cigar leaf or very stout burley in my pouch too. It made for a great contrast.

Overall I really enjoyed this experience, and maybe one day I will play again.

The batch I received as a free sample seemed to have the characteristics of an aromatic- and since I am not an aro smoker......ultimately, it didn't do anything for me. Like most aros, it smelled great, but was like smoking air.

It appeared to be made of very high-quality tobaccos- and the pouch note/room note was exquisite. It packed well and lit/stayed lit easily; and produced a nice volume of smoke. I smoked the entire 2 ox. bag...only because I was addicted to the aroma! Absolutely no nicotine to be found in it. :(

Like I said, I don't like aros- I like the heavier English blends, and full-flavored "strong" tobaccies- but IF you like mild'd probably LOVE this stuff (Or at least this incarnation of Bargain Blend- but of course, the actual blend changes from time to time, so you never know what you may get- but since the majority of Sterling's tobaccies seem to be mild aros, I'd imagine that they will often be the principle ingredients of the Bargain Blend).[EDIT: I've noticed from trying several 1776/Sterling blends, that they seem to use the same base tobacco for many of their blends- so chances of getting some consistency with this bargain mixture should be quite good- Yeah, toppings and subtleties might change from batch to batch, but I'd bet that you'd basically get the same general base in each load]

If I liked aros, I would have LOVED this. The fact that I actually smoked the whole bag says a LOT! I would recommend it to aro smokers- and feel that it is unfair to penalize this tobacco just because I don't care for aros. Me? I'll stick with SG&C's Black Irish X.

Hey, this blend is what it is. Not bad by any means. I added some Samuel Gawith Black XX to it and it made for quite an enjoyable smoke.

Soli Deo gloria.

My sample of this random mix of a blend was quite enjoyable. I agree with the previous reviewer in that Jack uses top quality tobacco, so regardless of how this changes, or what all gets put into the mix, it has a good base.

My sample was rather dark, & had a very sweet smell. It had lighter flakes that looked exactly like his sweet briar, and a small bit of latakia. It was easy to smoke, no need for relights. While I was smoking one of the females I work with walked by and commented that it almost smelled floral, like rose petals or something similar. I got a little of the room note, and from what I could tell, it was quite nice.

Overall, a clean burning, nice tasting, good smelling tobacco, that was free. Thats worth 4 stars to me.

clanobucklin wrote that he was interested in seeing what others were experiencing with this type of tobacco--

i can understand that--i found this review by accident, and am glad to see what others are experiencing--not so much a "review of blend" as a 'comparison of experience'??

my free sample was mostly rough cut burley--pouch aroma had a bitter/sour smell--not sure if is casing or ...???--after the char i got it going and burning easily--still a bitter taste for the top quarter of the bowl--as i progressed further the bitter became less noticeable and the burley began to appear--by the end of the pipe the flavor was at least enjoyable, if unique--never did decide if the bitterness is a case or something else--it was 'quite' bitter--

for the price (in my case free) of 15 bucks per pound one can do considerably worse--the leaf seemed to be good quality--this can be blended with something else to produce a really decent smoke with a bit of experimentation--of course you'd have to do the experimentation every time you got a new batch--but that might be fun--

This is a mixed blend of left overes or mistakes. It does not cost allot per LBS. I like this idea. In my eyes to make a blend like this work, its got to be top shelf tobacco to begin with. I think Jack starts with top shelf tobacco to begin with. Relize that this blend changes in the fact of what tobaccos are in this blend, what I like is the idea what am I going to get this time? Makes it's kind of fun! In mine I tasted chac, peach and a nutty full strong but not to stong flav. The woodmens like smell remineded me of being by the camp fire. I enjoyed this bacth and will get it again. Never know what you might get but that to me is part of the enjoyment. Picking out what you taste, how it taste to you and the mind set the blend can put you in and the room note. Again it changes each time but I love to idea behind it. The plus is, you get pipe tobacco to smoke in your pipe so when you have more time than money somtimes you can get a couple three LBS. and be set for a while and its left overs or mistakes of top shelf tobaccos. That's a preety good deal I think. May your pipe always smoke smooth. Jimmy

I was surprised to find this listed here. How can you rate something that changes every time you get it? My 'sample' tasted a lot like Super Value Vanilla and was rather unpleasant.

If you're dead broke and don't really care what you smoke then it's cheap enough.

This is the "garbage-can" blend that has a strong topnote of Maple. I got this sample free so I won't complain, well not too much. Its alwasy nice to see B&Ms trying their best to get business by offering their wares for nothing. This was very flat in taste, but did have a pleasant maple/vanilla aroma that was entertaining for about 1 minute. This did not burn hot but needed some drying time before packing. If you are on a budget, not that picky about your smoke and want some really cheap tobacoo this is 15 bucks for a pound.

I mean NO disrespect to whoever posted this blend, but I have to ask: Why is this here?

Bargain blend is made up of leftovers at the end of the day (as is done in countless B&Ms across the country). As such, it is ever changing - not only from bag to bag, but from bowl to bowl!

Because of this, Bargain Blend is completely unratable, and should be removed from the site (I've rated it medium across the board simply because I am required to rate in order to post, and I wanted to take a midline in the interest of fairness. It is not, and cannot, be a representation of what you will experience with this blend.).

This is both easy and difficult to recommend. On the one hand it is very cheap tobacco if you happen to be broke and need something to smoke. On the other hand you never really know what you are going to get. The sample I received tasted a lot like Super Value Vanilla. I've spoken to others that claim something different. I made this a little more to my liking by adding some maple extract so I didn't have to toss it out.

Basically if the economy has got you down and you are willing to take a chance then go for it. It's really hard to review something that can change each time you get it.
