The name of this blend can be a bit deceptive. While it is based on regular Mixture 79, those flavors are just a little subdued in this over regular 79. Also, this is not a “cherry flavored” tobacco in the usual sense.

A fairly classic American burley blend that runs around medium in intensity and just slightly lower in nicotine, which is strong enough to be satisfying but not obvious. Sort of rough cut, can be a bit difficult to get it burning at the start, but once it’s going it burns well. The flavors of Mixture 79, the most apparent to me being anise/licorice and a brown sugar like background, although there is a lot more to it than just that are there. In addition, the cherry brandy component comes through with a mild hint of brandy with subtle cherry coming and going. Not a chemical flavoring kind of cherry either, but rather natural. As I said earlier, this is not a cherry tobacco but rather delivers hints and an occasional puff of clear cherry. To my tastes, the flavor of the tobacco holds its own against the somewhat stronger flavorings and is not lost or drowned out. This is not a goopy/sticky tobacco in the vein of Lane aromatics and similar blends. It harkens back to an earlier style of American tobacco. The room note is very pleasant to me, lightly sweet and almost floral (sweet flowers, not Lakeland) with a clear classic tobacco smell.

This is a great blend in its genre and for me a wonderfully nostalgic one.

This was still available until recently, actually. In bought a new tub from Pipe's & Cigars in '13. You may be able to find the 14 oz tub from online retailers. Anyway, its the same tobacco and cut as regular 79. The cherry brandy top flavoring is very prevalent and the room note is pleasant. As with regular 79, best when smoked slowly. As slow as you can, in fact, for it can get bitey.

Very similar to its brother Mix .79 original but also unmistakably kin to Holiday Excursion, or Sutliff Holiday Match. Upon opening the tub i was surprised how underwhelming the cherry brandy casing was, its closer to a raisin or prune. If you are expecting a cloyingly sweet cheery blend this is certainly not the one for you, the topping makes it self known subtly through the bowl but is far from the prominent flavor. A sort of sweet mesquite and fig note come through the bottom half of the bowl and things can get really get hot and bitey if you push it. I doubt id buy it again as it was just too similar to the Original 79 mixture and is quite expensive (as far as otc cherry's are concerned)I will finish the tub just the same with no regrets, a pleasant smoke with a different flavor profile that fits my rotation at the moment.

I haven't smoked this for several years, so the review is pretty much based on the recollection of several years ago. If it is still available I may have to buy a bit of it. I remember it being a very good smoke, but as stated below, smoke it slowly. The thing I recall most about it was that people in the room seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. I wouldn't have considered it an aromatic, but a nice smoke.
