Sutliff Tobacco Company R-Blend

(2.41)
This unique blend astounds with its dominant yet still subtle fruity notes. The base is an equally complex mixture of Burley, Virginia, Latakia, Perique and Flake.
Notes: Perfect for fans of Revelation.

The HoW version left me with a bad impression all the way around, from the dullness of the burley to the relative lack of sweetness, depth, and flavor of the Virginia and the burley. In this version, the medium brown Virginia has a mildly natural tangy citrus and light dark fruit sweetness while the burley sports some earthy points, plus a light nuttiness and wood. The perique is very lightly added for a hint of spice, hardly noticed in the HoW. The Cyprian latakia brings very mild smokey, woody bass notes to give this mixture a slight flavor push. There’s a mild fruity rum topping that tastes better than the one HoW used, and slightly more obvious, too. it mildly tones down the tobaccos. The HoW version tended to have a cardboard taste that turned bitter near the finish, and smoked hot unless you sipped it. None of these qualities are true of the Match. This is more well rounded, smoother with no bite, and the components work together with greater consistency of flavor than the original. The nic-hit is mild. The strength is near the center of mild to medium. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and needs an average number of relights. Has a nice after taste and is an all day smoke.

When I first smoked this I did not know it was supposed to be Sutliff's attempt at HOW's Revelation. The description seemed really ambiguous ("Mild and Mellow"). I could see the Virginias and Burleys, and I could smell the light Vanilla/Rum flavoring. Upon lighting it I exclaimed "this would be great with loads of Latakia". Little did I know that it does have Latakia in it, although I could not detect much. It's funny how some people can tastes lots of Perique and/or Latakia in it. After a couple of bowls my impression of it was that it was a very pleasant smoking mixture with much potential to be an aromatic or a more spicy, English-like tobacco if one was feeling adventurous for blending. I would buy this tobacco, and I would strongly recommend it for the brave souls who would like to tweet a recipe.

Flavor starts out muddled. Don't get much of a fruity note - more the flavor of typical Sutliff vanilla/rum topping, which mutes other flavors. Once this flavoring dies out a bit, reasonable tobacco flavors emerge, but remain muddled. This continues through the majority of the bowl. Hard to pick out anything that wins or places, but some nutty Burley shows. 2-.

The Burley came through clearly with a hint of Virginia in the background. Perique? Latakia? Where was that?

I liked the strength of R-Blend, but it smoked a little harsh. The topping added provided a subtle, sweet splash that was enjoyable the first half of the bowl, but disapeard on me toward the last half of the smoke.

Another Revelation wanna be. It is definitely not House of Windsor(THATS A GOOD THING). Take this tobacco mixture for what it is with out too much dissection of the product. Burley, its in there and it is in the lead, Old Virginie is there too. These 2 lead th pack with Latakia and good old Perique helping the blend along the way. All of the components come together to make one truly satisfying smoke. Not too spicy, not too sweet just a good balance. This is another tobacco i smoke on a regular basis. It is well worth a try!

This tobacco is labelled "mild and mellow" and therein lies the reviews you will read. There are some of us who seek more power and more differentiation. These smokers want a blend to be forward, specific and memorable. Yet, there is something to be said for a blend based on a different philosophy. Blends that want to be merged in such a way as the components are so well merged and in such a way that no single element dominates.

This is one. All of the components are there and if you work at it, you'll find them. But to me that's not the point. "Mild and mellow" needs to be, well, mild and mellow. Pleasant but still non-aromatic. Woodsy, with just a touch of feeling like you're sitting around a nice dying campfire, watching the coal, having a nightcap and relaxing. Entirely pleasant, a tobacco that will not slap you upside the head. It's memorable in the sense of not being memorable. You won't discover the latakia right away, but it grows and is surely there by the end. As the bowl develops the components come forward, but still in a well integrated sense.

A beautifully smooth blend, complex in the sense that all the components merge into a "mild and pleasant" whole. It states its goal and it meets it.

Another free sample from an internet buddy. This is supposed to be like House of Windsor's Revelation. It certainly looked and smelled in the bag like it. There were some similarities in the smoking - enough so that I could tell it was a gallant effort. The fruity topping was there but not overbearing. The other tobaccos blended together fairly well and each was individually noticeable. The perique was a bit more present in this one.

Once again, the dangers of blend cloning appear. Revelation had a "signature" that's just not present in this one. As with their Barking Dog match, the flavor in this one just didn't live up to the HoW version. It just seemed contrived here, while Revelation is more natural and unpretentious. More harmonious. This one smoked hotter as well. It didn't bite but the temperature just seemed elevated. A bit of the typical Sutliff chemical flavor as well, which HoW did not contain, and the burley wasn't as rich here, either - a bit of cardboard taste that many Sutliff burleys have. Once again, in head-to-head competition, the HoW wins by a landslide. But I don't think that's a product of HoW being "better" than Sutliff. I think it's more that if one is used to the original, usually a copy doesn't suffice. I applaud Sutliff's attempt to bring back out of production blends but they may want to just stick to making their own originals. This is not a bad blend, but it doesn't stack up to Revelation.

The tin reads "MILD and MELLOW", and that is exactly what it is. The flavors of the various components are there, but this is a mild/medium blend. Not a bad entry in a crowded field.

This seems to me as the "Mild and Mellow" version of Sutliff CD Blend (Country Doctor - same components), which is a stronger tastier blend.

So read the comments below, all are correct.

Thought I'd try some of this being a big fan of Revelation (the now departed HOW incarnation). I didn't expect it to be a "replacement" and, IMHO it isn't. I agree that after popping the top on this stuff it looks and smells a lot like burley. It loads and lights easily enough. It offers a nice smoke, not what you'd call remarkable. It's the basic burley flavor with the latakia and perique there in the backround. No harshness or tongue bite. Similar to what I recall of Revelation but not as much "oomph". I've enjoyed the stuff and can't find anything negative to say. But there are a number of similar mixtures around that are as good or better. Will finish my tin and then move on.

Upon popping open the tin, the aroma said to me in no uncertain terms: "Burley". A very light colored mixture, any latakia or perique was well hidden. The cut could marginally be described as "coarse-cut", but contained quite a bit of small pieces. I tried this blend in one of my old reliable pipes: A 40+ year old Brebbia that agrees with most any blend.

The tin aroma was well reflected in the flavor, which had that slightly nutty burley taste. But other flavors were indistinct and did not come forward as I went down the bowl. It smoked a little hot, but not alarmingly so. No real tongue bite.

In short this is an inoffensive blend, perhaps suited for those who just want a tobacco with no dominant overtones. But not one I would reach for again.
