D & R Tobacco Vengeur Platinum Blend

(2.50)
A premium, medium bodied blend, enhanced by the addition of exceptional flue-cured tobaccos and developed to be smooth and flavorful, this interpretation of the classic U.S. Blend style is delightfully complex with a balanced finish. No chemical flavorings added. This premium blend is medium bodied and contains the finest quality Gold Leaf, Burley, and Oriental tobaccos.
Notes: Vengeur Platinum uses a bit more flue-cured leaf than the other entries, for a slightly sweeter blend. D&R means Daughters & Ryan Tobacco Inc.

The grassy, very tart and tangy citrusy, slightly woody gold leaf Virginia forms the base of the blend. The nutty, toasty, earthy, woody, slightly cocoa-ish burleys are an important condiment. The dry and lightly sour, woody, vegetative, herbal, lightly floral, smoky Oriental also offers a pinch of spice in the background. The strength threshold is in the center of mild to medium, while the taste is a step closer to medium. The nic-hit is a rung below the strength level. Won’t bite and has no harsh moments, and barely has any rough edges. Gets a tad stronger in the last third of the experience. Burns cool, clean and a little fast with a very consistent, mildly complex flavor. Hardly leaves any dampness in the bowl, and requires few relights. Has a pleasant, short lived after taste, and room note. An easy going all day smoke that’s smoother than expected with just enough character to hold your interest. Three and a half stars.

Had about 6oz of this blend. Easy to smoke, light it and forget. Very affordable. Comes in bulk.

That is all the good I can say as it bit me like crazy. Harsh chemical like coating left in my mouth. Tried it in a variety of pipes, even added a little moisture to it. Have not had a blend bite me like this so I am marking it up to my own chemistry and not the tobacco.
Pipe Used: Cobs and meers.

The Virginias are grassy, but not excessively piquant or sharp; the Burley(s) are somewhat nut-like, but mostly woody; and the Turkish is easily recognizable -- especially in the finish -- offering an exotic edge without upstaging the other players. (The Turkish tastes amazing similar to McClelland's tinned "blending Turkish".) There's just plain, unadorned tobacco flavor here, without much depth, and about as suitable for cigarette smoking as for the pipe.

I give it a lukewarm recommendation, for while there is nothing to dislike here, there is nothing to rave about either. Amateur blenders will find this a ready and malleable base that can be pushed in any direction; and cigarette smokers moving to the pipe will find a familiar alternative to flavor-loaded pipe blends.

If you like a no frills smoke with a slight sweetness you'll like this blend. Very smooth on the pallate down to the bottom of bowl. A little citrusy with a slight nuttiness, hint of pepper and buttery finish. Room note is subtle and inviting. Easy on the mouth, no bad aftertaste. Should be taken at a leisurely pace. Surprisingly cool smoke for a dry mixture. No harshness. Somewhat monochromatic ( to its advantage). I recommend airing this out for a short while before lighting your first bowl. Jar the rest. All in all a solid blend for a simple, non-aromatic anytime of day smoke.
