A combination of crimp-cut light Burleys mellowed with Perique, bright Virginia, and just a dash of toasted Cavendish - all aged to a natural sweetness. Great for new smokers

A very good burley blend, although I like Milan's 101 Burley better.

I'll just steal what one of the other reviewers said: "A natural good burley mixture. No or very little casing added. This blend smokes cool, dry, and has a natural sweet flavor. It burns evenly and doesn't have to be relit often." Yes, I agree.

401 Burley by Milan Tobacconists is a mix of soft, moist, irregular flecks of tobacco ranging up to one centimeter in size, mixed with wide-cut ribbon. It is composed of five or six different shades of leaf from black through various brown-tones, to a very bright yellow-gold. It has a velvety feel and buttery-sweet pouch aroma -- faithful harbingers of the smoke to come. Although it behaves well in all respects at the moisture level provided, I prefer it slightly drier -- which is easy enough to achieve.

Aromatics smokers will probably like this blend from the get-go. It is purported to be non-aromatic; but it might be a naturally "flavored" blend, in which case Milan is splitting hairs. I find it to be a touch carob-like, I think, but I can't attribute that to chemical adulteration or anything other than blending wizardry. Every bowl burns down to dry ash: no gurgle, no dottle, no artificiality whatsoever.

401 Burley, a moderately sweet and nutty blend, is at once spicy and floral, with the suggestion of something rather gamy or musty in the nose. I don't find any evolution of taste -- it's a pretty linear smoke, though the floral note fades somewhat. Its gentle sweetness leans toward that of simple sugar, and away from the complex sweetness of, say, tender-cooked vegetables or the caramel tastes that a good Virginia flake develops, but it's still delightful.

In sum: good smoke volume; fair nicotine hit; packs and lights well; requires occasional re-lights if smoked at an appropriately slow pace; cool, dry and mellow; sweet and flavorful; complex, yet not distracting; minor issues from the Perique tingle; nice salinity; an ephemeral musty or gamy component.

401 Burley is a somewhat inscrutable blend that will challenge your palate if you want it to; and will beckon to you frequently whether you want it to or not. It is sensibly priced and available in sampler quantities.

A natural good burley mixture. No or very little casing added. This blend smokes cool, dry, and has a natural sweet flavor. It burns evenly and doesn't have to be relit often. This is a good alternative to aromatics and englishes. Good old American tobacco blend! If you like a little more kick ask Renee or Dave at Milan to make a blend of 14oz of 401 and 2oz of straight toasted cavendish. That extra 2oz will boost the strength and nicotine content dramatically. Toasted Cavendish is basically a stoved burley. Much like Latakia is a stoved oriental. So it packs a PUNCH! This is an all day mix that is not tireing, nor does it scorch the palette. While you're at it, try the " Poochie's Blend ". If you like toasted marshmallow, maple syrup, and vanilla, Poochie's Blend will be a treat!
