If you smoke this straight, you'll find it rather bitter and harsh with no sweetness, with a woody flavor and a mild hint of cedar. I did smoke this in a pipe with an exceeding small bowl and for a quick, short smoke, it wasn't bad, but on its own, it's difficult to recommend. If you're a pure burley smoker, you won't be satisfied. As a mixer, it can be used to good effect, as many blends with white burley can attest. That's the real reason to buy this. I give it two stars, probably deserves two and half stars as a mixer. As for smoking it straight, one star is plenty.

Summary: Most will want to blend this tobacco, which has a flavorful nutty taste but some greenness best balanced by spicier ingredients.

Although C&D "White Burley" is sold primarily for blending, smoking this tobacco on its own reveals some of the secrets of Burley. The bowl begins with a slight bitter undertone in a thin grainy taste, but then blooms into nuttiness and increases strength as the smoke goes on. Throughout the bowl, a faint "green" flavor like lightly-cured vegetative products often have is present, and in addition to the nicotine, something else exists in this blend which manifests itself as a dense feeling in the chest and gut. While it is of medium strength, it is not mild. Imagine stoving this and adding cocoa and small amounts of wintergreen flavor and you have Prince Albert; it is also reminiscent of the many times it appears in other blends as part of the supporting cast. When mixed with another tobacco, it takes on the flavor of the stronger ingredient but then adds its own harmony in the form of a nutty full flavor. Probably few will want to smoke this on a daily basis but it is a better leaf than most estimate.

I am reviewing several C+D blending tobaccos as a precursor to some blending experiments. I know not many people blend, but these reviews may provide some hints to those wanting to do so.

Definitely the blending base of the lot. This tobacco is very bland and seems to have strength primarily in burning characteristic - very cool and no bite. Just a slight almost cedar like flavor and aroma.

Harsh, bitter, and lacking flavor. If you can dry something beyond the state of being dry this is it. Wonder how many years this has sat in the bin it came from? Turnover can't be very high. Longer than my old dog has been alive would be my guess.

Mild in body unless you count the harshness. Mild in flavor unless you count the bitterness. A genuine inferno in the bowl.

Bought this for blending. Found it to be very low quality. Burns nicely, but tastes sour and flat -- like dirty gym socks.

Put some in the oven on 200 degrees for about three hours, which turned it dark brown and improved things tremendously.

There must be better burleys out there. Don't waste your money.

I love Burley. I love C&D, but this tastes like smoking a brown paper bag. Very poor quality low grade burley. A real disapointment and IMHO a total waste of money. I bought 2 lbs of it and a threw away 1.85 lbs of it.
