Peretti Boston Slices

(3.00)
This a blend of all Virginias like the Oxford flake only milder in body and significantly lighter in color due to the tobaccos used.

An easy to break apart straight Virginia flake that offers some citrus and dried dark fruit, grass, wood, light earth, and a very mild spice note. The sweet level is mild. A very monochromatic, mild smoke with a mild nic-hit. The strength and taste levels are just past the mild mark. Has no harsh spots and won’t bite. Burns a moderate pace, cool, clean, even and fairly smooth with a very consistent flavor from start to finish. Requires few relights, and leaves virtually no moisture in the bowl. Makes lots of smoke. An easy going all day work and play smoke that wears well during the day for the smoker who wants a pleasantly light Virginia that he doesn’t have to think much about.

Another product that I would describe as a good mild "fold-&-stuff" flake. These flakes are pressed just enough to provide a lengthy, cool & even-burning smoke, but not enough to force you to have rub them out or cube-cut them. The first portion of the bowl is grassy and citrus like with a dry crisp finish and a pleasant spiciness. The flavor remains fairly consistent through out the entire smoke, although mid to end-bowl flavors are a bit more woodsy & earthy and at this point, the finish develops a subtle tanginess as well as a bit more of a piquant zip.

Altogether Boston Slices are flavorful and I could easily smoke this more than once a day if I felt so inclined. Typically I prefer a slightly sweeter and more complex smoke, but the body, flavor-strength and nicotine of this tobacco are just about perfect for me. As far as Virginia's go, Boston Slices are somewhat of a plain Jane, but in all the right ways. A bit bitey if smoked smoked too fast, and that's all the reason I need to slow down.

I bought eight ounces of this in the search for a milder flake and am not disappointed. There seems to be a slight casing used as evidenced by the aroma from the tin and the initial flavor when lighting to about 1/3 down the bowl. Perhaps it is the figs noted in the previous review. I find this initial taste and aroma somewhat annoying as I like pure tobacco without any additions, but it is not enough for me to dislike the blend or not recommend it. After about 1/3 of the bowl has been smoked this flavor pretty much disappears and it becomes a typical sweet Virginia. It does not have the tongue burning/mouth burning characteristics of Peretti's London and Oxford Flakes which prpbably comes from smoking them too much, thus, it is a good all day smoke or when one needs relief from a stronger tobacco.

Tin note is basic straight sweet Virginia with a hint of grass and hay. Peretti tobacco's (that I have experienced) have all come at perfect moisture levels. The flakes are lightly broken up and easy to pack. I really like this tobacco. It is not complex but it is very flavorful. It burns to a white/gray ash with one light. The flavor is stewed fruits, apricots keep coming to mind although I can't say it tastes like apricots. There is a hint of dried hay in the flavor and it gets a bit like toasted bread with jam after the mid way point. I have found this best in smaller bowled pipes, for what it is worth (lil acorn cob makes it sing). I cannot say this with any degree of certainty but I have found that Peretti has some "magic" ingredient that they case or top their tobacco's with. All of them seem to have something that I cannot put my finger on that adds flavor to the tobacco to enhance the taste and aftertaste that compliments the tobacco flavors and doesn't take away from it. I am not sure what it is, or if it truly exists but whatever it is it always improves the flavor. Well done Peretti!

This is a true traditional Virginia flake; nothing to share with the great McClelland productions, it's much more similar to the European way of manufacturing a flake tobacco.

The slices are thin, pretty large(1 1/2" or so) and about 2 1/2" long. The colour is a light shade of brown with some darker stripes and golden flecks.

The smell is classic Virginia, dry and a little spicy, reminding od dried fruits (figs in particular), very similar to Capstan.

The flakes rub out very easily, the moisture content is perfect, and pack easily too. It starts with just one match without problems.

At the match it again reminds of Capstan, the same intense dried fruits flavour and the same tongue bite at the beginning. Later on the flavour keeps consistent though mild and the bite disappears. The body is light to medium, suitable for an all day smoke. The smoke proceeds without evolution or particular points of interest, it isn't a complex blend, but it goes well: cool, dry, no problem, just a little cigarettish.

All in all a good tobacco, but too mild in strenght and flavour to suit my taste. You can think about it as a milder version of Capstan (blue tin).

It seems the last 6 months or so, all I have reviewed are English/Balkans and aros. Time to get back to the Virginias and VaPers!

So far, theis has to be the thinnest flake from Peretti's I have smoked.

Light brown and bright Virginia make up this flake. Aroma of figs, hay, and grass, this smells amazing in the pouch.

Rubs out very nice, and loads just as easy. Does have some spring on the charring light.

First half of the bowl is a standard straight Va flake. Sweet grassy hay-like notes, with a touch of floral essence. This reminds me a bit of Astley's 109 or an OGS. 2nd half the floral note becomes more intense. If straight Virginia flakes are your thing, you'll enjoy this. It's kinda boring to me, but good quality tobacco nonetheless.

Flavorful Virginia leaf that burns slow due to the cut. I prefer a little more (okay, a lot more) strength in my Virginia leaf and this is one of the lightest Virginia Flakes I have ever smoked. Not much change in the flavor as one meanders his/her way down the bowl.

A very pleasant smoke in a convenient and neat flake or slice format. Rather than rubbing this out, I simply folded it and it lit up nicely and burned slowly. The tobacco gave a mellow Virginia flavor with no bite. So, this might be a bit too mellow and plain for the VaPer smoker, but I could easily smoke this all day. I preferred this tobacco flavor compared to Park Square.

Mild as previously noted, but also subtly sweet. A pleasant and straightforward sweet Virginia that is smooth and inviting. I found zero bite and no harsh edges. My flakes were quite moist but it still burned like a champ and did not steam my tongue. I’m terms of behavior this would be an excellent introduction to Virginia flake. In terms of subtlety it may be less so for newly initiated. Patient and gentle tasting unlock the natural graham, honey, and hay notes I enjoy in straight Virginia. The smoking experience and flavor reveal excellently sourced components.

Smoking now:

An unassuming medium brown flake that smells like Virginia tobacco. Sweet, slightly tart, hay, grass. It’s nice. Breaks apart, packs, and lights just fine.

A mild and easy going Virginia flake. Woody, vegetative, hay, grass, naturally sweet, some malty bead in the background. Smoked half the bowl and forgot I was reviewing it. No mouth tingle or bite. Smoked very well. Slight hay and bread on the retrohale with a slight nose tingle. It’s unremarkable but in a good way. It’s a pleasant natural easy flavorful straight forward Virginia flake. Would smoke this anytime anyplace. Consistent flavor start to finish.
