pipesandcigars.com Scotty's University Professor

(2.86)
Inspired by an old Professor, this tobacco is an excellent entree into a fine English tobacco blend. Hand blended with Latakia, among others, this is a tobacco that has a smokey taste and can be smoked all day.

The Latakia and Orientals deliver the smoky, earthy, notes desired in a medium English blend. The bright Virginias deliver a very noticeable sweetness. An immediate comparison that comes to mind is Dunhill Standard Mixture. Though it is serviceable and I will continue to smoke it time to time, I do find it to be inferior in quality compared to Standard Mixture, GL Pease Westminster, and other premium blends. An easy all day smoke however. It smokes cool and leaves little moisture at the end of the bowl.

The Latakia is a little less present than the earthy orientals. You really start feeling it after the first third/half of bowl in a subtle sweet smokey barbecue sort of flavour. The balance between these components is good. The Virginia is there to enhance the thing with floral and grassy tones. Notes of fresh bread also enjoyed.

I find it pleasant because it is very well balanced, but I prefer more complex/deep blends. Easy go-to everyday smoke.

This is a fantastic blend. Normally overlooked but every time I smoke it, I wonder why I don’t smoke it more often. It’s a well balanced English with well balanced smokiness. It produces lots of smoke and stays lit. I find it a very satisfying smoke. Not overly complex or luxurious, but a great English blend. I have found most of Scotty’s blends that I have tried to be great all day smokers.

I was able to sample some of this about a week ago at the pipe club from a bag dated May 2020. I really did not get to smoke very much but what I had was okay but for me I found it a little to sparse in the Latakia department. Yes, if you like mild blends this definitely could be an all-day smoke. For now, only two stars as stated previously I prefer more Lat in my blends.

I like this blend. It's got a nice smoky flavor...kind of a mix between campfire and slow BBQ smokes. Earthy and some spicy notes are sneaking around the back end of it. Not sweet per se, but there are some Virginias in here to give some balance.

This was a sample from The Happy Piper. I usually like strong English blends since the mild blends seem for me to lack flavor. Upon opening the sample I was greeted by a pleasant Smoky, slightly BBQ, light earthy, touch of bread and a hint of grass aroma. A ribbon cut that packed nicely. Drying time was a half hour. Normal relights. Burned steady, no bite, very pleasant room note, Burned into a white ash. Very little moisture. It throws a thick smoke at a very slow pace did not notice any nic hit.

Upon lighting I was met by a mild smoky flavor that had a slightly sweet bbq aftertaste that was pleasant. There was a very light earthy flavor with a light grass and bread flavor that danced in the background. Very well balanced. The flavor was consistent from beginning to end. Don’t believe you could get a bite from this. Very pleasant blend.

This would be an all day smoke. It is not complex but pleasantly balanced. Normally light English blends are okay but I like them heavier. However, this is well done. It is light but it has light flavors that are enjoyable and pleasant. Most light English are smoky and not much of anything else to back up the Latakia.

This was a pleasant smoke and I would definitely buy some just to enjoy as I do chores or driving for it is pleasant and there are times one does not need a complex blend, but rather a blend to enjoy as one works. A big thumbs up on this one. A 3.3 out of 4.

This is a very solid 3.0-3.5. Reminds me of Kramer’s FrDempsey, not precisely, but fairly similar. There is a bit of a background flavor, I can’t identity it. Very low to no nic hit. Certainly an underrated blend. No tongue bite either.
