A careful blend of Virginias, Burley and Cavendish make this blend perfect for the "student" of the pipe. This tobacco has a wonderful aroma and has pleased many pipe smokers.

The vanilla from the small amount of black cavendish is not strong and is very smooth, leading me to suspect a little of the vanilla syrup comes from the topping. The burleys are very nutty with a molasses sweetness, and a hint of earth and toast. The Virginia cavendish is honey sweet, lightly toasty. I've wondered if this is an attempt to duplicate Nut Brown Burley because it tastes much like a slightly toned down version, though NBB has more black cavendish and could bite if pushed hard. The nic-hit is very mild. Won't bite or get harsh. This burns a little fast, but very cool and clean with a consistent flavor that does not weaken at the finish with virtually no moisture in the bowl. Produces lots of smoke, and leaves a very sweetly pleasant after taste and room note. An all day smoke, and tastes even better with hot tea or coffee.

There's a slight smell of vanilla in the pouch, but none discernible in the taste. The feel of the tobacco is quite moist; possibly PG or some other humectant is present. As I smoked this tobacco, I asked myself the following questions: How do you make a burley milder and cut the nicotine? Add some cavendish. How do you make a burley sweeter? Add some Virginia. Do that and you'll get University Student. According to the blender, there's no flavoring added save the cavendish and the Virginia, (though I detect a hint of vanilla,) and the overall effect is to highlight the taste of burley, which comes through quite nicely. It reminded me of Pipeworks and Wilke's Nut Brown Burley, though reissued in a milder version. The maker describes it as a tobacco to learn on, but I think experienced burley lovers will find it quite pleasant as well. It's a light, mild tobacco; one that can easily be smoked all day. The nicotine is low, though it's certainly detectable, but hard core lovers of Vitamin N will probably want to pass this one by. And of course if you enjoy the taste of burley, this is definitely a tobacco you'd want to look at.

August 2018–I see that this tobacco has been deleted from P&C’s lineup. Recent Tobacco regulations prevent the blend from being sold as such. Sad, because I really enjoyed it. However, if you really want It, P&C sells it as a “Blend Kit,” which means they’ll sell you the components along with instructions, and you can blend it yourself. I have no idea how close the finished product will be to the original, but if you really want some, here’s a good place to test your blending skills.

This blend is more of a...classic blend in my opinion. It has a nice flavor and aroma for a non-aeromatic. When I first started smoking pipes 15-years ago I was looking for a pipe tobacco that had a nice aroma and flavor but wasn't too sweet. It took me a while to find this but I am glad that I did. Me being an English blend fan this is a nice blend that fills the need for a non-aeromatic blend when you are out of your full bodied English and Balkan blends.

I would highly recommend this blend to experienced smokers, new smokers might find it a bit full bodied. But some poeple like full bodied blends, so new smokers go ahead and give it a try but remember it's a bit full bodied.

After being forced to quit by my wife 20 years ago I recently decided to go back to pipe smoking. I used to like English tobaccos and one of my favorites was Ehrlichs DPE and also Balkan Sobranie. I though I had better start with something mild and work my way up again. After smoking 2 pounds of University Student blend I find that this is a very pleasant smoke and the family can also tolerate the odor. My grandaughter actually likes it. I have since graduated to some of McClellans tobaccos but still like an occasional pipe of Students blend.

For a burley based bulk aromatic, this certainly has a lot going for it. It's just a good, all-around tobacco. It is non-descript, but I mean that as a positive. Its taste is all tobacco, a little on the sweet side but not cased or flavored to my palate. It's mild but not wimpy, smokes cool and doesn't bite, stays lit well and provides lots of big fluffy white smoke clouds. It's beginner-friendly and as such will not satify the hardcore Balkan and latakia lovers among us, and if you like to be backhanded by your nicotine, pass this one by.

Someone here recently compared tobacco supply to a wine cellar, and stated that any decent wine cellar needed to be rounded out with everyday housewines. I thought it was a good parallel, and in my stash University Student gets the same billing as other blends like Carter Hall, Half & Half and Burley Light --- simple, reliable, inexpensive bulk blends to juxtapose my prized (and pricey) tinned favorites. I've been smoking this one with my coffee almost every morning for the past couple of weeks, and it's a good way to start up the day. A very nice little blend.

One of my first tobaccos. Part of the appeal for me (a university student!) is that it's so cheap! I've found it tasty with a room note resembling vanilla and plums.

I've ordered this four times. It can come a bit moist, and may gurgle fresh out of the pouch. It smokes very well after a bit of time exposed to air, requiring no relights, burning to a fine white ash.

Creamy and cool smoke, with a good strength. All around, very smooth. And no tongue bite! If the taste leaves something to be desired, it mixes well with other tobaccos to balance them out.

The Student tastes slightly vanilla, in a very good way. Its fairly moist right out of the bag; however, burns well, and unlike many aromatics, does not leave my mouth with the odd feeling of having been coated with an acrid film. I had no issues with the Student, and look forward to smoking this blend again soon.

I'll revise this description later and do this blend some justice. For now I just wanted to get it on the record that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this blend! I've never ripped through a stash of tobacco with more alacrity or zest! Get some now!

The other reviewers to date describe this as a non-aromatic. I find that incredible. Based on the reviews of this tobacco, I recently purchased 4 oz to give it a go and and was startled by the strong vanilla smell when I opened the bag the first time. I am not a fan of aromatics but I tried to keep am open mind as I smoked my first, second, third......pipefuls. I don't care about the room-note as long as my wife doesn't complain. I'm only interested in the taste and Student is too perfumy to suit me. If you enjoy the unadulterated taste of tobacco, Student isn't for you. I'll smoke what I have, but no more.
