Dunhill My Mixture 27

(3.33)
A classic English mixture, nutty in taste. Mild to medium in strength, it is a blend of Cavendish, Virginia and Oriental Leaf.
Notes: My Mixture #27 was first introduced in 1917. Blended in London until 1999, production then shifted to Murray's until 2005, at which time all the blends exclusively available at Dunhill's Duke Street shop in London were discontinued. Described in "About Smoke" (1927) as "A mild Mixture with soft delicate flavor. Cool smoking. Contains only Virginia and Turkish tobaccos. Originally Blended for Capt. Rogers."

Yes, this is an English blend, but the oriental leaf and unsweetened cavendish are very discreetly added, allowing the Virginia base to really shine. If you can find a tin or care to order #27 I think it will be worth your time and money. A rich Latakia blend with so much more!

Notes: Well, No. 27 is no longer available. Dunhill stopped selling their in-house blends when Murray's closed in 2005, so you'll only come upon a tin by sheer luck, and then from a pipe smoker who's selling off his tins. Good luck with that.

I tried this in various pipes and various vintages. It greatly benefits from several years of aging, mellowing with age.

Appearance: Thinnish to medium cut ribbon, ready rubbed. Gold-green, nut brown, and dark brownish black in equal proportions.

Aroma: Sweet plums, dried figs, cherries, dried wheat, smoke, nutmeg.

Taste: A well-balanced mild-to-medium English blend. Well-integrated flavors of dried figs, wheat, walnuts, corn oil, smoke, allspice. A hint of sour-sweet flavor in the aftertaste. Excellent mouthfeel. The oriental leaf (including latakia) plays more of a supporting role here, helping the natural Virginia tobacco flavor to shine in an English context.

Comparisons: Supremely refined, quite similar to Dunhill's My Mixture No. 965, but simply more elegant. Probably the most well-balanced, refined English blend I've tried. It lacks the body and punch of No. 965 or Nightcap however or the sheer voluptuous nature of Peter Stokkebye's Proper English or Lane Ltd's A-100.

Bottom Line: Well, it's no longer made. If you want a mild-to-medium Virginia-biased English blend with a little Oriental leaf to spice it up, this would be a definite choice; however, it's not worth seeking out by any means, when there are many excellent English blends still available.

I found the #27 to be a milder version of the Standard blends. It burned easier than Standard Mild or Medium. The tobacco was definitely an all day anytime smoke. There was a luxurious note to the blend. One of the best of all Dunhill tins and I like a lot of them.
