Mac Baren Mixture Modern

(2.75)
This blend is at the mild end of the taste spectrum in the Mac Baren Mixture Line. Mixture Modern is a touch sweeter than Mixture Scottish Blend, but distinguishes itself with a more complex flavor, yet similar room note, while still retaining the special Mixture flavor.
Notes: A.k.a. "Danish Mixture". Introduced in 2000. Previously sold as Mixture Mild. Name change due to EU laws that words like "Light" and "Mild" cannot be used on tobacco products anymore.

There's a natural citrus sweetness and a little grass from the Virginias that comes through even with the toppings, and the cavendishes vying for attention. I get some honey, oats and earthy, nutty notes, the latter coming from the burleys. The gold cavendish provides some slight citrus while the black cavendish adds a mild vanilla flavor that doesn't dominate. It's a mild aromatic, very smooth and creamy. Light on the nicotine, it burns at a reasonable pace with no bite, little moisture in the bowl, and makes a very pleasant all day smoke that won't bore you. Nice after taste and room note, too.

This is what a true Danish blend should be. Lightly sweet tasting, with a sweet old school aroma, and tobacco taste plus some nicotine to boot. I love this ! Its Scottish blend with a little more sweetness basically. Its full of flavor and very pleasant on the nose of all. Folks will say( That pipe smells good!) when u smoke this. This is the closest thing to the old Skandinavik aromatic in the blue tin that is discontinued. I love these types of Danish ! This is what sailors of old and merchant marines put in their pipes, blends like this and Plumcake ! It sweetens and breaks in a briar nicely too ! Anyone wanting to start pipe smoking or someone who wants a real aromatic in their pipe that's not syrupy and hot smoking, this is what you should try. If there were more aromatics like this you wouldn't have to resort to English as laden with latakia! I personally don't want a heavy latakia laden tobacco all the time. In fact, an everyday, all day main tobacco should be like this or Scottish blend too. Imho, Mixtue, Mixture Modern, and Plumcake are the best tobacco Mac Baren has. You can't go wrong with any of those 3 ! Mixture Modern has that aroma of your grandpops pipe. Sweet clean aroma without the goopy, cloying, high fructose corn sugar that makes you sickly disgusted. You English smoking folk would like this blend, give it a shot !

This reminds me a little of Wessex premier rich aroma ! The flavoring is cherry liquor and hickory nut extract but way lighter than Wessex. Also more strength. This is different than Scottish blend in flavor and kick. Its lighter and sweeter. A true classic Danish blend. I like this for a change up from Scottish mixture. This is a good tobacco for beginners looking to get into classic tobacco and away from the slop syrup bulk stuff.

The tobacco is a loose ribbon with some black cavendish in the mix. Pouch note is slightly sweet and a little grassy. It came at a good level of hydration for smoking and I smoked it "as is."

The tobacco burned well, and it was a pleasant smoke although a mild on mild experience. It got a fairly consistent flavor that was slightly more intense in the last half of the bowl. I can taste just a little of the Virginia in a light citrus note. The black cavendish adds a whiff of vanilla. The topping is very light and hard to identify. It tastes a little like an over-ripe orange. Room note was pleasant.

This one is good in a mild "all-day" sort of way.

I like MacBaren's blends a lot but for some reason I never tried this one. I bought some in an auction on PipeChat.info and I was very pleasantly surprised! This stuff is good, very good! If anyone claims that MacBaren's blends bites, they need to try this one, you can't make it bite. And it has a burst of flavor that I really like. It has the hay like flavor of a good VA with just a little top note. It has a lot of flavor but it smokes cool and dry. It is a mix of different colors in a rubbed out ribbon cut and runs from light khaki in color to a dark almost black. It comes at the perfect moisture content when opened and needs no drying out. It smokes all the way down the pipe without any moisture in the bottom of the pipe and leaves a grey ash with just a little dottle. It tastes good from the first puff and never gets too strong to the bottom of the bowl. The room note is very pleasant, is not overbearing at all and will not get complaints. Just ask my wife! This tobacco really surprised me, I have been smoking almost just this one since opening it. It is for sure one I am going to buy for my cellar in quantity and is already one of my go to blends. Very highly recommend this blend!

The Virginia's are lightly sweet and grassy, the burley adds depth and the Cavendish lends a hint of sugar and a subtle vanilla note to the finish. However, it's the flavor of the tobacco that's on display here and like any good Danish style aromatic, the room note is very pleasant but the aromatic attributes are mild and play second fiddle to the flavor of the tobacco.

Mixture Modern is reminiscent of Davidoff's Danish Mixture, but this blend has slightly more flavor depth and a bit more complexity. Mild and bite free, Mixture Modern is a solid spring/summer smoke. Recommended.

Not bad at all. I'm currently smoking this as I am writing this review. Tastes great, burns well, and stays lit, plus makes me happy! I actually enjoy this more than Davidoff's danish mixture. That part surprised me. You get a good amount of tobacco for what you pay. Definitely recommend it!

I picked up a tin of this to try to get a handle on Mac Baren's "modern cavendish." I'm a big fan of Mixture - Scottish Blend, and they got the flavor fairly close. There's a malty taste in Scottish Blend that I don't get in Modern, but otherwise it's right on. I think if the EU hadn't outlawed the words 'Mild' and 'Light' they'd fit well here, Mixture Mild was more descriptive.

I do get some burleymouth from Modern that doesn't happen with Scottish Blend. That seems to be its biggest drawback. It is mild in all ways - nicotine, flavor, room note. Textbook Danish aro.

Nothing about Mixture Modern is better than Mixture in my book - Mixture wasn't a full-flavored blend to begin with, so Mixture Modern is basically a light version of a light blend. After 100gm of Modern I won't buy any more. However, the big caveat: this might be my new benchmark for blends to recommend to a new or inexperienced smoker who is having trouble with packing, lighting, and temperature regulation or tongue bite.

I'd rate it highly recommended for the new pipe smoker, and that seems to be who Mac Baren made their modern cavendish and Mixture Modern for. It's a fantastic starter tobacco. Old hands will have long since moved on to a daily smoke with more character. It's an entirely unremarkable but inoffensive 2 stars.

There's an air of mystery to this one. It's similiar to Carter Hall in many respects, except for being slightly sweeter and having the Virginias dominate. The aroma is similiar (coffee/cherry/nutty) and was hard to pinpoint at first. The taste is wine-like, with the Virginia fighting it out on one's pallate-slightly heavy. I detect a hint of Latakia somewhere in the mix, which adds a nice smoky element. This is a blend that you should try at least once. Personally, I prefer Carter Hall and MacBaren's Navy Mixture to this. One drawback, it smokes hot midway through which causes the pipe's stem to overheat and the smoke to turn slightly bitey. It's very noticeable in a cob and in hot and humid weather. Living along the river in South Dakota I can vouch for that. So if you use a cob pack a full bowl. Otherwise, save this one for sipping, the briar and indoors. It's a good smoke, but not a favorate. UPDATE 4-9-17: Took out a mason jar of MM tonight and fired up a bowl. Sweet, creamy, a little peppery. It was nice but too sweet for my palate. No bite, but rough on the throat. This works more as a dessert type than daily codger. Just before smoking a bowl, I had spent the day smoking Blender's Gold Burley and Black. To be honest, I prefer the BGBB to MMM (I can almost hear the laughter and gasps when I say that). I found BGBB to be smoother with no roughness on the throat. It's not as sweet and works really well as a daily with a decent room note. Both blends follow the classic Virginia, Burley and Cav model but BGBB costs much less for the same amount of leaf. Mixture Modern has a little more black cavendish but can burn hot and be a little too much to take in at once. Whereas BGBB has more emphasis on the burley (leaning more toward Carter Hall). MM is a decent smoke but doesn't quite make it to three stars.

Disappointed to receive this McBaren blend when I actually ordered Scottish Mixture (4noggins refunded it after I mentioned the mishap), I was surprised by its elegance - confirming the praise it has received by other reviewers. I normally would never dare offering a tobacco review since I never quite detect the fig, raisin and citrus flavors so often mentioned as typical of the intriguing Vapers I favour. Well, a 1:1 blend of Mixture Modern and Orlik Golden Sliced allowed me to at least imagine them, as the slight amount of Perique in OGS sings in rich bellows of smoke, often exhaled through the nose. Sorry, that's as far as I can competently hint at the wonderfully satisfying experience of this chance encounter. Needless to say, I reordered this gem of a tobacco.

Mac Baren has always been a company of either home runs or strike outs with nothing in between. Either their delicious burley blends or the hottest scorching Virginia's you have ever smoked. MM is a great mix of Burley and Cavendish with their distinctive Honey type topping. Something in this mix allows you to taste the top grade leaf without having to wear asbestos over your tongue to enjoy them. I really cannot smoke these topped Danish blends anymore but I would most definitely recommend MM and will give it 3 stars for little bite and a nice amount of flavor.
