I can appreciate all of the enthusiastic reviews about this rather unusually named and tasting blend, but I don't think I'll be joining the band wagon.

Moose Scat is not sweet enough for me. It is bold and somewhat salty in the English tobacco sense. I found it to be a rather palate numbing blend that is sure to be appreciated by those who enjoy dark beer and Highland Malt.

If a bold English taste with lots of variance as you work your way down the bowl suits you (and apparently, it suits plenty of folks) then have a dose of Moose Scat. It'll leave an impression on you, that's for sure.

And, as is the case with most all of the Jack's blends I have tried, Moose Scat is more coarsely cut than fine, burns evenly and cleanly, and is hard pressed to bite.

This is one of those unusual blends that doesn't offer a great deal of strength, but sure does offer plenty of flavor.

Ahh... Joe at Jack's Tobacco has done a great job here. The Moose, like the other Syrian blends at Jack's is top notch. While not as sweet as Mongrel Dog, the Moose is still a very rewarding smoke. This is not a beginner's tobacco, and requires a solid appreciation for English blends. But, for those with a refined taste for top quality Syrian, this is a must try.

12/04 After some age a sample I have is absolutely fantastic. Sweet and smokey in equal measures. It is literally confection like without added goop. A shame the supply of this wonder may be running low. A slightly high bulk price when compared to other equally good blends, but IMO worth buying a pound of before it becomes unavailable.

----- Others have described the attributes of this blend, so I won't go over that ground again. My sample is very dry, which gives it a nice, even and pleasant tasting burn. At first it is so savory that I was convinced there was some topping. Working through the bowl I find it is just extremely flavorful tobaccos blended with skill.

Reminscient of Black Frigate or possibly even Night Cap, but a bit more varied and lighter in flavor than either of those.

I got a one-ounce sample of this blend when I ordered some of Jack?s Tobacco?s 12th Anniversary, which this blend resembles. I would say that Moose Scat is like 12th Anniversary but with the Orientals component toned down (since this blend predates the anniversary blend, I guess it would be more accurate to say that 12th is like Moose Scat but with the orientals component beefed up). I prefer the anniversary blend to Moose Scat, and Firehouse Dog to both, but it is still a wonderful smoke. I highly recommend trying them all, and I look forward to sampling more of Jack?s mixtures.

I found that the orientals in this blend really came through much clearer when I smoked it in my meerschaum, but it lost much of its character when smoke in my Cavicchi billiard or Castleford prince. The blend is rather delicate, so the ghosts of previous smokes in these latter two pipes probably overpowered the Moose.

Moose Scat. What a name. The folks at Jack?s had to have an awful lot of confidence in this blend to give it a name like that!

The Latakia content is well over 50% according to those ?in the know?, but somehow it comes off as being lighter, taste-wise. For the coolness and smokiness that Latakia brings to a blend, the Moose has it in spades. There is a bit of an underlying taste that is almost (but not quite)floral, but it doesn?t jump up and grab you like some other blends do. This Moose is mellow.

A very cool and well-balanced blend in spite of the high Latakia content. A must-try for Latakia lovers. Set your coprophobia aside and fire up a big ol? bowl of Moose Scat.

Moose Scat. April 2004. 'Delicious' Not as strong as Penzance and some others. But would still be considered strong in a delightful way, compared to some others. 'Not at all overwhelming' But totally enjoyable. The latakia shows up front with the perique suttlely noted at times. The turkish is definitely there but doesn't take over at all. I agree totally, with the comments made by the previous reviewers. I detect no bitterness and no negative after-taste,also easy to keep lit and leaves a nice clean white ash. Top accolades for this one and highly recommended.

Moose Scat has wormed it's way into my pipe smoking heart to become one of my absolute favorite tobaccos. I was introduced to this blend by a neighbor of mine, and I have become a devoted follower of the cult of the Moose ever since.

Moose Scat is a wonderful full English blend impresses me on every score. Colored mostly dark brown and black with a few lighter strands about, the cut is a mix of ribbon, broken flakes and finer bits. The leaf smells so good in the bag that I almost want to grab a pinch and eat it (so far, I have been able to resist the temptation).

The tobacco is fairly moist when fresh, and I prefer to dry it out for a few days before smoking or canning. When dry, the leaf packs well into the bowl, and lights easily. The first puff gives a clue as to what is coming: a remarkably flavorfull and smooth smoke. Descriptive terms that come to mind include rich, (naturally) sweet, smoky, full bodied, and cool. To my palatte, Moose Scat is the finest English blend that I have ever sampled. If I had to list the primary reason I think that I like this stuff so much I would have to say that it was to to the quality of the Virginia components used in the blend. I have yet to find another English tobacco where the Virginias marriy so well with the Latakia and other leaf.

Although it is really not fair to do so, if I compare Mose Scat with two of my "reference" English blends I find that Dunhill Nightcap tastes a little dull and flat. Compared to the Moose, I find Dunhill 965 to be almost on the bitter side. Remember, these are my impressions and your milage may vary.

Moose Scat is my desert island smoke - you know, the one I want if I am ever stranded on a desert island and was limited to only one tobacco. I know that my review may sound a little over the top, but my enthusiasm gets reinforced every time I light up a bowl.

I first tried this blend at the 2002 Milwaukee pipe show and have been smoking it ever since. Wonderful flavor that keeps me coming back for more. If you like latakia than this is a must try. You will not be sorry.
