Mild to Medium Mild Mild to Medium Pleasant

This was designed to be a clone of Amphora Red, and indeed, there is a similarity to the original regarding taste. The fruity topping has the same berry flavor in subdued fashion. I detect more of the burley and Virginia here than I do in AR, all of which led me to suspect some of the topping has flashed off a mite. If you can't get the original, this is a decent, mildly sweet substitute, and maybe more so when it's fresh. Judging it on its own merits, it's a very comfortable aromatic that burns well, leaving no dottle and very little moisture. I suggest you hydrate it a little, and not smoke it dry for full effect. I found this tasted best when sipped, and once it seasons a pipe, the flavor seems to get a little more obvious to the taste buds. The original is a little smoother and is less likely to be hot on the tongue. It's not complex, but it is a decent work and play all day smoke.

Mild to Medium Mild Mild to Medium Pleasant to Tolerable

Amphora Red is a Dutch-style cavendish in a mostly rubbed out slice. It has a mild sweet topping that might have a little fruit or citrus in the profile. I smoked a 12 oz tin of Amphora Red a month for about 8 (maybe 10?) years, and I was recently gifted about 4 oz to remind me of the old days.

The sample of Euphoria I got had been open a while and I was warned some of the topping might have flashed off. It is a short medium-width ribbon with a topping that is slightly sweet and tastes a little "bready." The tobaccos are identified as burley and Virginia. It presents as mostly burley, and perhaps the Virginia contributes to the sweet.

As a match to the Amphora Red, this is a two-star blend. The flavor is vaguely similar, but the original has a fuller cavendish flavor and a little more body.

As a blend to smoke without the comparison, this is a 3 star smoke. It is pleasant and is a mild/medium lightly topped tobacco. It is in the category of "all day" smokes that pleases. It does not challenge you with complex flavors or have nuances that require a thesaurus to describe.

My rating is based on the merits of the blend and not the accuracy of the match.

Very Mild Mild Extremely Mild (Flat) Pleasant to Tolerable

Blend Packaging: Bulk, I received a 1.5oz sample pouch

Test Data

Pipe: Pipe 1: Virgin Cob for first smoke. Pipe 2: Same Cob for second smoke (new filter) Pipe 2: Savinelli Bulldog for 3rd smoke. Fresh balsa insert.

Initial Impression Unlit: 1st opening(pipe 1): very berry, almost bubble gum like and very sticky. 2nd opening(pipe 2): (after 3 days loosely folded in pouch for slow airing), almost minty in smell. 3rd opening(pipe 3): like salem cigarettes.

Lighting: Takes charring light well,

Bowl 1st 3rd:

Pipe 1: No tobacco taste, loads of steam, smelled like Bubble Yum gurgles in a cob.

Pipe 2: No tobacco taste, fluffy white smoke no gurgling this round.

Pipe3: Light tobacco taste, bit like hell.

Bowl 2nd 3rd:

Pipe 1: Bit like hell, steam settled. Vapo-Rub note overpowering the VA's. Burley quietly attempting to hang on.

Pipe2: Burning Vapo-Rub, Burley bite rearing: VA's retreating .

Pipe3: Would not stay lit. When lit Burley without flavor, No VA note Vapo-Rub aroma (medicinal)

Bowl Bottom 3rd:

Pipe 1: Hot, darkened dottle that was very wet. Would not burn to bottom of bowl.

Pipe 2: Hot, less and lighter colored dottle. Not quite as wet. Burned to a non-fluffy light grey ash.

Pipe 3: Cooler, some light and moist dottle. Burned to a non-fluffy light grey ash.

After Impression

Not too sure how to call this one. The difference after drying was quite evident. There is appears to be some PG on this tobacco, and although dryer after 3 days loosly wrapped for slow drying, it is still fairly moist. The ?fruity note? disappeared after 3 days and was replaced by a hint of menthol like aroma. This tobacco went from bubble yum to vapo rub. I will not try this again.

This tobacco would appeal to a younger smoker who is seeking a lighter tobacco that has some aromatic qualities. It is a step-up from the standard drug store fare. This tobacco needs to be kept sealed to retain the topping notes however. There is little tobacco taste even in the third round of tasting. The VA's seem to be suffering a bit under the Burley's, however they are present for duty. Without them the tobacco would fall flat.
