Although the country they operated out of (Switzerland), was known for flavored tobaccos, this brilliant old blending house went against the grain by producing some of the finest English style blends ever produced. And believe it or not Wellauer & Company also was known for its brand of chocolates and other confections. The only way I could get their tobaccos back in the 1980s and early '90s was to swap tobacco with an old Pipe Smokers Ephemeris member who had me send him tobacco he couldn't get there.

Erste Mischung was a very popular Wellauer tobacco and you can still find old tins in great shape today. It was absolutely a fine mixture with the cigar leaf serving only to bolster the Latakia and Virginia components. The result was a full and satisfying smoke that reeked of quality with every puff. It was easily my favorite in the Wellauer stable.

A very fine cut ribbon, with good variety of colrs evident. This came very moist, absolutely unsmokeable right from the can. The aroma was definitely of an aromatic nature, but not pleasant at all. I couldn't identify it, nor did I want to. After drying it for a few days, and allowing some of the aroma to dissipate, I tried a few bowls. The flavor was sort of a mild crossover of English/Aromatic. I had difficulty picking up the "Havana" leaf, and found Latakia also elusive. There is some Oriental leaf. My impression is that it might do for a hot weather smoke for anyone not seeking a latakia flavor. It might be a good intro for an Aromatic smoker who wishes to try an English blend (assuming it can be found). My can was given to me by a friend who bought it in Europ.
