Gawith Hoggarth American Delight.

The first thing to point out with this one is that it is a little on the damp side, not massively but just a touch so if you take a bowls worth and leave it about an hour it will be ameliorated enough to smoke. The aroma coming from the mix is quite a sweet one but not at all strong with a delicate fruity/floral touch in the background.

This blend gives a good burn which is very stable and steady in the speed, it doesn't require too much attention with re-lights! The smoke is unfathomable in many ways, the consistency is lovely, more towards the thick/full end of the scale. The flavour is impeccable, you get a really appealing sweetness which is not heavy, more of a compliment that works along side the similar taste emanating from the Cavendish. The different tobaccos are nicely balanced, they are at a nice level with one and other so they can all be pleasantly appreciated without the aromatic side making the tobacco flavours redundant. To be a little less positive this can be a bit of a biter so by gently sipping this one the flavours can be enjoyed more.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: pleasant.

Four stars.

Is a good aromatic. For Me, it is sweet and it haves notes of fruits, cocoa, caramel and vanilla. Rassembles Captain Black White or the Royal, but is better, although less sweet. Low Nicotine, as other Flue-Cured. I enjoy.

The sugary, lightly toasty black cavendish is the lead component. The Virginias offer some tart and tangy citrus, grass, bread, vegetation, some sugar and mild floralness. They are supporting players. The cocoa, vanilla, fresh fruits, and light, bitter caramel are the stars, although they don’t totally drown out the tobaccos. The strength is a couple of steps past the mild mark. The taste is a couple of notches short of the medium threshold. Has a light nic-hit. Won’t bite or get harsh, and barely has a rough note. Burns cool, clean and tad slow with a very consistent sweet, mildly sour, floral flavor from start to finish. Has a lingering, mildly bitter after taste, and a pleasant room note. Leaves a fair amount of moisture in the bowl, and requires a couple more than an average number of relights. Can be an all day smoke.

This is a tasty fine smelling aromatic. The smell is somewhat remiscent of Lanes 1Q, but not exactly. While 1Q is somewhat sticky to the touch, this GH AD is not sticky, and left no finger residue during packing. This hit the mark for me in taste, smell, and had no tongue bite.

A perfect blend, with nice flavouring/casing, fantastic note from tin to smoke. Taste is mellow, somewhat sweet with hints of chocolate, nuts & vanilla. It offers a perfect balance of taste and room note. It is one of those blends that the fragrance remains constant from tin to smoking through the bowl.

The tobacco moisture if just right and often times I put a bowlful on a sheet of paper and give it about enough time as it takes me to prep my pipe, pull out my matchbox and tamper (about 2 mins) and then pack & light. 1 char light & 1 smoke light is all it takes. It burns evenly and when smoked slowly doesn't get hot, but puff on it and it will let you know... hot smoke and hot bowl.

Overall, this is one excellent smelling blend, smokes well, tastes good, and is a nice relaxing after dinner/evening smoke. One thing to note, even if the moisture content is just right, once you get to cleaning your bowl, you'll notice a small amount of what looks like thin molasses, which I presume if some of the casing for this aromatic. It does clean out well, but is of note for folks wondering about such things.

I first bought this in 2004 with my first pipe a Peterson 303 rustic bent apple. Sniffing the jars I wanted something that might be as close to a certain old British pipe smell I could find. (I was seeking St Bruno flake but I didn't know that at the time yet. The holy grail had begun).

American Delight, being an aromatic, it was lucky that I discovered this first before smoking anything else in a pipe :i hadn't discovered tongue bite yet, or the power of hard nicotine hitters like Condor Ready Rubbed or ropes and plugs which would of spun me out at that time.. American Delight looked after me and it looked after my pipe as well.

At the time a Golden Virginia roll-up cigarette smoker; I was enchanted by the black and gold speckled appearance of this moist tobacco in the jar and I was optimistic this might be the one: It wasn't; but it was still a good one anyway.

The quality this has over other aromatics is 1)'no bloody bite', 2) 'it burns cool', 3) 'it doesn't transition into a vapid ashy hot air' 4) 'it doesn't become acrid wet acidic and chemically artificial, 5) 'it doesn't shit my pipe with gloop, or burn out the briar.

American Delight smokes how I wish every other Aromatic would but doesn't. Sure I have enjoyed other aromatics but I have had to suffer for most of them. American Delight doesn't make me suffer for it.

The description says vanilla /caramel casing, yes I suppose it has and it comes through in a gentle balanced measure ;but to sum up the over all taste of the tobacco and aromatic experience combined; I would say its like a fresh out of the oven 'walnut and date' soft sponge cake with a bit of iced sugar lightly dusted on it. The tobacco in this aromatic actually tastes of tobacco as well.

I went quite a few years without getting more of this tobacco because I couldn't remember the name of it or who made it.. I thought perhaps it was a shop blend, and the original shop I bought it from went out of bizz.

Shortly after I went the route of Peterson aromatics and others which I thought were ok at the time but I since feel are just bitey bastards. I am thankful though for Old Dublin, Irish Flake & Irish Oak though.

So I forgot about American Delight for a few years until I saw the name of it in another shop 11 years later in 2015 and got an instant memory recall. It looked the same and smelt the same in the jar, i smoked it and it was the same. Searching for American Delight again was its own holy grail.

Smoking American Delight now I can appreciate that it really is as good as my first memories of it and I haven't got false nostalgia syndrome. It is a hell of a lot better than many so called aromatics I have smoked since behaviour wise.

The pipes I have generally have narrow draughts which amplify milder tobaccos in taste. I can taste it well and clear in my pipe, but if your pipe has a larger internal draught and an open exhaust of a mouth bit, your pipe possibly wont have enough pinch to amplify. Peterson P'Lips and early Falcon pipes with the more pinched mouth bits work well. (they also have moisture traps)

The smoke produced is a heavy thick and fluffy on the tongue, like a vape almost as well, of a sweet and nutty, even marshmellowy honey, its mapley and freshly baked rather than toasted in taste. It smokes but its like a vape also.

Perfect beginners smoke but well worth coming back to later when you can judge what you have smoked in between what has been pretending to be 'the aromatic of aromatics' etc.. As a generally non aromatic smoker with plenty of jars of unsmoked aromatics from about 6 years ago when I gave some a 2nd chance to remind myself if I was missing anything-(i was in a way but it wasn't them)-i was really missing American Delight at the end of the day.

American Delight I could smoke all day, other aromatics I can only smoke once and have to call it a day after one bowl or suffer accumulated tongue bit after successive sessions.

American Delight is an aromatic I don't have to make excuses for or over look its nature and go to elaborate means to get it to taste. Having tried most of the available flavours of aromatics I rate this one as the best non tiring and consistant version.

I got to give American Delight 4 stars as an aromatic category smoke enjoyed by a generally non aromatic smoker.. I'm not a snob,if other aromatics were as good as this I would smoke them. The others I have stuck in the jars from circa 6 years ago is not for cherishing and ageing, they are just abandoned crap.

The description compares American Delight to Lane's 1Q. Hmm. I have both tins in front of me and my nose is not finding any similarities. 1Q smells of silky milk chocolate and American Delight gives off a sour soapy smell with some sweetness way in the back row. This is not a bad thing, just a different beast here.

It is as spongy as cake and a tad damp. Grab a good mound of it, because it will take a bit more than usual to fill your bowl.

Time to strike a match and put it to the test... Wow, what a light and mild aromatic. Still no 1Q chocolate taste, but something differently pleasant here. I know the idea of tasting soap seems odd, yet each breath transports you to the back of the store where they sell just that (no Ivory or over-the-top odor, just a light clean taste). I could see why this blend draws a line in the sand with ardent supporters and detractors.

I however liked it. When I was done, my mouth felt weirdly fresh.

Worked my way though a fivers worth of this stuff a few years ago whilst at University. Memories are nothing but fond, with the stuff smelling fantastic both out of the packet and lit.

Sweet (whilst not overpowering), Hints of vanilla, smooth, even burning (although requiring a touch of drying first) and a wonderful sweet, aromatic room note.

Cant reccomend this enough for a beginner to pipe smoking, may go buy some more soon to reminisce!

Well, yet another fantastic blend by the masters at Gawith,Hoggarth & Co.!! Having become addicted to Top Black Cherry as my favorite aromatic, I thought I would give this a try as well. In a word Fantastic! VERY mild, a great all day smoke for someone wanting something very simple or a perfect tobacco for the beginner. I am a die hard VA/PER lover, but this, Top Black Cherry and Bob's Chocolate flake will be kept around my home for as long as it is available! Also, much like the previous GH tobacco's mentioned, this is a real crowd pleaser! Everyone around you will love it!! Highly Recommended!!

***UPDATE 7-22-06*** I have to add one BIG warning to anyone wanting to try this wonderful tobacco. If you try it, and love it as I do, do NOT buy this blend in bulk. I ordered 8 ounces recently and it came to me MUCH drier than the tinned version. And it lacked the depth and flavor that you will get from the tinned version. It is a complete dissapointment in bulk. Still highly recommended, but ONLY the tinned version! While more expensive to purchase the tinned version, you will experience no dissapointments!
