Consolidated 105: Royal Viking

(1.75)
A great Danish formula, made from our four base blends. Each blend has been stored and fermented individually, before the final blending. The teasing aroma of Mild Hickory Nuts adds character and brings you a harmony of perfection.

Sometimes you can toss everything in a pot, stir occasionally, and low and behold the end product is superior to any of the components in the mix.

Sadly, this is not the case with Royal Viking 105. The best description that first comes to mind is "simply flat". The blend just doesn't have a "backbone" you can hang your hat on.

One the positive side, the blend burns fairly cool and rarely required a relite. Although I smoked it fairly slowly, there was no hint of bite or burn. This would be a good all day blend for new pipe smokers, but I suspect experienced smokers of aromatic blends are going to find this one a bit on the bland side.

This is a nice smelling tobacco that was available from a neighborhood tobacco store when I started out with a corn cob pipe. The smoke is rich, but the flavor is lacking. There is a vanilla or sweet flavor, but when smoked it more often contributes to making the bowl burn hot. This makes it bitter and bite easily. I suppose it might be a simple, affordable blend if you used to enjoy smoking cigarettes. It's made by Altadis/Imperial who is responsible for high-end cigar brands, but also produces well-known, over-the-counter cigarettes, cigarillos and rolling tobacco. Presumably, their pipe blends are sourced from the same tobacco stock of the latter group. In 2013, Altadis pipe tobacco division was acquired by Mac Baren, and is distributed in the USA by Sutliff which was formed from the Consolidated Cigar division of Altadis.

Consolidated - 105: Royal Viking.

In the pouch resides a very coarse ribbon, of which about 70% is brown/light brown. I can smell it has a nutty touch but it isn't potent, and the hydration's good to go straight away.

The hickory topping is strange. If the pipe's sipped gently the nuts have a buttery, sweet, flavour; like butterscotch. But, if it's puffed too vigorously they can develop a sort of bitterness. So, I OBVIOUSLY avoid doing this! The tobaccos have a fairly soft flavour. Any nuttiness from the Burley becomes confused with the topping but the Cavendish and Virginia can be identified EASILY; there's nothing to become conflated or mistaken with where these two go! I find the burn from it good, but it can issue me a bite.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: nice enough.

105: Royal Viking? The flavour's quite inimitable, there isn't anything particularly 'bad' about it, but after a day of smoking it I'm bored! So, for the remainder of the evening I'm going to smoke an old favourite: Germaine's Rich Dark Flake! This deserves two stars:

Somewhat recommended.

I feel the best way to describe this tobacco is average. I would never buy it but as a freebie from the pipe club I gladly took it. I Like the other review say that it is a rather bland mixture that could use something exciting to make it stand out.
