Bright to medium brown Virginia in various cuts and some mildly-sweet Black Cavendish, finely tuned with flake slices, which also make for a quiet glow and cool smoke.

Wappen von Hamburg is a richly aromatic, soft mixture; in the taste, a genuing tobacco taste prevails. The rather unobtrusive aroma only serves to enliven the natural sweetness of the Virginia tobacco.

Recommended for larger bowls.

Mild to Medium Very Mild Medium Pleasant

Yet another blend from the series "Hamburger Pfeifentabake" by Dan Tobacco, sharing the tin format and basic label design with the others (Wittkittels, Seute Deern, Alter Pinnas, Fleetenkieker...). The tin belies the name: It shows the sigil of the city of Hamburg, not the advertised coat-of-arms.

Opening the tin, the topping really seems to be that in the aroma -- just a topping; I can smell the VA with some added fruitiness, and the mustiness of the BC. The cut is only slightly varied; mostly a medium ribbon cut with the occasional small bit of ready-rubbed flake. Stuffing is easy enough, and I concur with the package note that the larger pipes should be preferred.

The smoke starts out with a single light, plus maybe one char. The taste is creamily sweet, gentle, no bite. The room note has a trace of fruitiness in it; apart from that is toastily sweet in a good way. The strength (and toastiness) goes up a little throughout the bowlful, though never reaching truly remarkable levels. Wappen von Hamburg burns down gently and quietly to a light grey ash in most pipes, relights being a rare necessity.

Not being one to downrate a blend just because it is not extremely strong, for me this one has a good taste and aroma; it's not a truly exceptional tobacco, but certainly very good, solid stuff that I can recommend.

Wappen von Hamburg smells like Haribo Gold-Bears out of the tin, but the topping is surprisingly soft when smoked. It is fruity but doesn’t cover the tobaccos completely, definitely a crowd pleaser though. I can taste bright Virginias in the foreground providing some edge in the beginning accompanied by a little Burley. It will smoothen out after a few gentle puffs, letting you enjoy the creamy, fruity candy casing in nose and mouth, if you are into such an infantile thing. This blend does not need much attention and is perfectly suited for a smoke in public or even at the office. WvH is a very pleasant aromatic available at a fairly low price (in the EU) and therefore a delicious price-performance winner.

If it is not available for a reasonable price where you live, subtract a star. Of course I am prejudiced, because I live in Hamburg.

Extremely Mild Mild Very Mild Very Pleasant

This could be a great aromatic if the strength of the tobacco (nicotine) and the tobacco flavor (taste) was increased. It is just too mild for me. (There is a definite, but faint, taste of honey here.) The casing should not be increased as it would probably get too hot.

I could smell this somewhat but could barely taste anything. The room aroma is quite nice - my wife, unsolicited, said that this smelled really good.

If you prefer mild tobacco, this may be worth a try.
