Broad cut Virginia leaf and darker, heat fermented dark brown ready rubbed Virginia flake, rounded out with a goodly proportion of latakia. A full bodied but pleasantly smooth pipe mixture with a stout taste in the typical English vein. Slow burning with a nicely cool smoke.

Usually I don't like latakia mixtures made in Germany: light, acrid, unbalanced.

This one was a pleasant surprise, though. Sure, it's not perfect, and it doesn't have the rich complexity of my favourites (GL Pease, Squadron Leader, Skiff), but it's a really nice smoke if you want a medium English - style. IMHO it's better than all of Dunhill's current offerings in the same category...

What can I say except that's it's absolutely "Standard" as the name suggests? Don't be fooled by that "evening", though: this is lighter than Nightcap, Bill Bailey's Balkan or similar powerhouses. It's a good afternoon smoke.

Think Bill Bailey's Balkan light and you will have a rough idea. Or Timm 1000 with less finesse and more Orientals.

Though a bit unexciting, it's a blend that I do not regret buying at all.

This is not a lat bomb. This is a full english mixture on the oriental / spicy / earthy side. It's a well rounded, balanced mixture. There is a lot of dark leak. The smokiness is not overwhelming. Easy to pack and light you can reduce the bowl to ashes without any relight.

One of the best Dan Tobacco blends, if it's what you're looking for: a full english / balkan mixture on the sweet, spicy, smoky side.

I must be crazy. The name of this blend is "Evening Standard," and the previous (and so far only) reviewer had already noted this as a Latakia bomb. So I should be smoking this in the evening.

I opened the tin in the early afternoon one day after running out of another English blend. The tin note is, of course, smoky, with a bit of sweetness and a steamy- meaty note on the side. The leaf is very dark brown to black with some bright yellow VA highlights. The ready-rubbed mentioned in the description on DanPipe's website must be rubbed very well indeed; I cannot find any in the mix--but the dark VA is definitely there.

The leaf is ready to light straight out of the tin--no excessive moisture--lights up easily and burns slowly. The taste starts out smoky and sweet (my favourite combination...), satisfyingly full, and deepens a little throughout the smoke. Evening Standard has been compared to Bill Bailey's Balkan Blend, and yes, it compares. Favourably. I find more depth and sweetness in ES, and much more meatiness.

I definitely like, and will honour the name in the future. This is a full after-dinner mixture that should go well with a peaty Islay or Orkney Single Malt.

This is a full latakia blend. While it is full and smoky, it is just not very good.

Bailey's Balkan & Red Virginia Superb are far better.
