I found a sealed can of unknown age for sale so i bought it, similar to another piper i figured this was a sliced flake or ready rubbed flake. Its more of a broken flake and It looks like Carter Hall in the can but smells musty, pungent and a bit like a barn's hayloft. It leans to the English side of things if i had to choose, I reckon as the commercial pipe tobacco industry progressed over the years and smokers began to have a greater selection on the shelves this one got lost as its almost unsmokable. I imagine some oldtimer cursing me saying "thats all we had to smoke back then, and we liked it that way" Its a walk down pure Nostalgia Lane as far as tin art, design and aroma is concerned, almost like burning Pecan wood (if you know what that smells like) It burned hot, bitter and dry leaving my mouth warm to the touch. I blended it with some Middleton Cherry (which is equally as bad,but i had to use that up too) and it seemed to round out the bitterness, kinda like turning the lights out when getting down to business with a homely girl..........doesnt make it good, just gets it over and done with. There is a reason why this gone and forgotten.

Pipe Used: Bonnie Briar sandblasted Dublin

Age When Smoked: old.....probably older than me

I think I jumped the gun on this one, folks. I loved this tobacco the first few months of smoking it. Now, some months later, I find it barely fact the only reason I continue to smoke it is to try to get rid of what I have left (Daddy always taught me not to be wasteful). The room note is very strong and, to many, unpleasant. The taste that I not long ago found earthily spicy has taken on a sour yet muddy flavor after prolonged use. I no longer recommend this smoke to anyone.

This old blend was written about in older issues of the Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris as an alternative to the cheap Virginia American tobaccos of the time as a richer, more flavorful smoke. That may be true, but Schermerhorn did not ramp up the taste much to me. I had fun opening the old lever top tin that was in my cellar, and the smell was quite good. It all went downhill from there though. You can always tell whether a Virginia was top shelf when you crack open an old tin and discover the aging had not darkened the leaf much and I found no sugar crystals to tantalize me.

Don't know what the aroma is . Comes in a great can ! This stuff to me is way to hot ! Maybe if ya mixed this with bestoval it would be the missing component of each blend being great ! ? ....LOL... Anyway , comes in a great can and if you enjoy pain like fire then this is off the map !

I made the mistake of ordering this blend without any research or recommendation. The 'flake' in its name was not what I expected since the cut of the tobacco is more like a confetti. Its moisture content was also about like paper. Being extremely dry in the 14 oz. can, it smoked very hot. I even ruined some better blends while attempting to use it as a blending tobacco. I've had better smokes as generics from the drug store.
