Watch City Cigar Cap'n Boomer's

(1.67)
In chapter 100 of Moby Dick, Captain Ahab meets Captain Boomer of the British whaling ship "Samuel Enderby". Captain Boomer, too, was mauled by the white whale and lost a limb which was replaced by a whale bone, but unlike Ahab, boomer was able to maintain his sanity and put the episode behind him. He is more interested in telling Ahab of all the good rum he drank during his recuperation than the gory details of his amputation. This English-meets-American-blend salutes Cap'n Boomer's love for the demon spirit. Rich crumb cut burley, Carolina and latakia are cased with a measure of Ship's Rum and aged for several weeks under pressure. Delicious!

The final (so far) in the Moby Dick trilogy, along with Ahab's Comfort and Stubb's Pipe, this one adds a measure of latakia to Stubb's. The cut is more ribbony and the tobacco is darker. A sniff in the bag reveals a musty burley aroma on top with latakia riding shotgun.

In the bowl, the burley leads but the latakia and rum flavoring are a close second. There is a slight virginia sweetness as well but it's fleeting. Unfortunately for my tastebuds, the rum and latakia clashed and the presentation was wearing to the point where I did not finish my 2 oz sample. It worked best for me in a pipe with a less than fully open draw, which is also the case with Two Friends English Chocolate. My conclusion is that flavorings mixed with latakia don't fare so well with me. But my shortcoming may not be yours; give this a try if the concept of a burley-forward, light latakia'd, rum infused codger smoke appeals. It kind of reminded me of Middleton's Walnut with rum. And don't push this one - it got VERY cranky when I did so as a test. Consequently and as with Stubb's pipe, this is a front porch smoke. Relax and enjoy!

The nutty, woody, molasses sweet, earthy crumb cut burley takes the lead. The smoky, woody, musty, earthy, sweet Cyprian Latakia is a secondary player. The mildly grassy, citrusy Carolina is not forceful and plays a background role more often than not. The sweet, rich rum topping has a little spice, and does sublimate the tobaccos to a moderate extent. The strength is just past the center of mild to medium, while the taste falls a step short of the medium mark. The nic-hit is a little past the mild level. Won’t bite, but may have a harsh, rough edge if puffed fast. Burns fairly cool, clean and a tad slow with a very consistent flavor all the way to the finish. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires a few relights. Has a pleasantly lingering after taste and room note. Can be an all day smoke. Two and a half stars.

About all I can say for Watch City's Cap'n Boomer is that it's better than Watch City Slices (see my review). At least CB has some flavor, but I don't taste the Virginias or the latakia, and the burleys are nothing to write home about -- no sweetness or richness, just grassiness. As for the top note, if that is rum, it is very cheap rum.

Another disappointing blend from Watch City.
