Motzek Tom-A-Hawk

(4.00)
Already the unburnt scent promises a fruity liveliness and ripe-sweet piquancy. A mix from choice Virginias and dark fired Virginias, enriched with 20% of precious perique and a whiff of latakia to round it off. A dream for fans of characterful Virginia/perique mixtures.

Tom.....a hawk! The name is most appropriate, because Tom managed to blend this mixture with the eye of a hawk, really! As mentioned before I don't like Latakia and only like very small amounts of it in my blends. So when Tom-A-Hawk was released this week I hestitated to buy a 100g bag and ordered a small sample....well.. I regret not getting a bag! Because the Latakia is barely noticeable, yet adds depth and a smooth smokiness to the blend without its typical musty-ish aroma.

If you dip your nose into the tobacco you get gentle spice, some smokiness and a lot of Virginia goodness adding some sweetness, hay. 20% Perique add a somewhat fruity and slightly sour dimension, whilst the dark fired Virginia supports the Latakias smokiness and makes it much more digestible to a non-Latkaia smoker like me.

The cut is varying from coarse cut, to fine ribbons and some broken flake-ish pieces (as Motzek doesn't produce flakes, I guess it's broken Plug!). The coloring is dominated by medium brown. Few black speckles and some brighter ones.

Its taste is delicious and dominated by the lovely Virginias and the Perique. They offer decent Virginia-sweetness, earth and hay, who are spiced with a good punch of Perique-pepper, as well as some fruitiness that is also slightly sour and rounded by the smooth, woodsy and little earthy smokiness of the Latakia and dark fired Virginias! This would even appeal to smokers who don't like Latakia at all I think, as the Latakia is barely noticeable in the taste and is balanced by the dark fired Virginia tht makes it digestible to me. Yet the Latakia gives this blend "that special something".

This is a environment-friendly alternative for the English-smoker, as well as great extension for any Virginia lover that loves some spice and smoke to their blends by times I suppose.

4/4 stars for this skillfully blended and "with the eye of a hawk" proportioned ratio of the ingridientts to create a blend with Latakia, that even smokers who don't like Latakia will find pleasure in! Edit: This is the first Latakia-containing blend, of which I bought a 100g baggie! Grew to be one of my favorites atm!
