(2.50)
Rich, rounded, in dark, intense colors. Best Virginias and perique, digestible and full-bodied, rounded off with a pinch of Kentucky. Rich, strong in character, but not too bulky. A golden autumn-evening in your pipe.

What a lovely plug! After I was so thrilled by "Kieler Freu(n)de Alte Hasen Plug", I was really looking forward to try the this month (Sept. 2017) new introduced VP Plug No. 3.

VP No.3 looks just as delightful as Alte Hasen Plug, as it's again layered and you can really see the different ingridients. Medium Brown at the top and bottom, a small layer of dark black and in the iddle a medium- to bright brown core layer. Those guys know how to present tobacco...!

I instantly cut it in half and took a deep sniff. Motzeks typical Perique aroma, musty (in a good way), fruity, slightly sour is what hits me first. Smooth, tobacco-y, with a nice nutty, earthy undertone and hint of honey-ish Virginia sweetness. Comes perfectly conditioned and ready to smoke, but can make use of 30-60 mins of drying time.

Within the first few puffs I was sold...THIS is some tobacco, oh my! Full-bodied spice, tartness and most natural tobacco goodness. This boy has got some Perique in it, not too much, but enough to make it's presence easily known. A very earthy, decently nutty and minor sweet base of the Kentucky is extended by a very peppery, a bit fruity and slightly sour Perique aroma. The Perique has the same qualities as the one in their "Tom´s Dark Twist", but more mellow and digestible than the powerhouse "dark twist". They have some fine, fine Perique, I love it. The Virginias sport a minor sweetness that's only lurking in the back, but balancing and flattening the edges to make this a very well rounded blend.

After the first half the Kentucky steps a bit forward, intensifying the nuttiness, a little more sweetness comes through, making the smoke a tad more mellow (it's not overwhelming at any time tho).

I really fell in love with this plug..! This is the perfect complement to the more mild, and Oriental-forward "Kieler Freu(n)de Alte Hasen)-Plug. Alte Hasen being the exotic, mysterious and very complex "1001 nights" beauty...VP Plug No. 3 being the bold, honest, no-nonsense and bold Viking speaking in metaphors. VP Plug No. 3 is far from being one-dimension tho! It has its complexity, but can easily be enjoyed while not taking your mind on it.

You like a full-bodied blend with decent spice, that's most natural? VP3 is definetly for you! You like a nice share of Perique in your blend? VP3 is for you! You (like me) love the "Trinity of Pipe Tobacco" (Va/Per/Ky)? VP3 is your holy grail! A must try for anyone who likes a bold, honest and most natural blend. The plug cut makes it even more delightful.

You guessed it....4/4 stars!

**Update:** After having this blend stored for several months in a mason jar the flavor(s)/flavor profile has dramatically changed, if not to say: The flavors are lost! (This one turned sour) I've noticed the same phenomenon (that quite baffles me..) with several other Motzek/TAK blends. A pity, as I have 200-400g of several TAK-Blends jarred up.. half of which I had to dump in the trash, as they taste totally different.. some of them are fructous-ish sweet, nothing else.. some have lost their flavors and are "flat"... some turned sour... sorry, but I'll have to downrate and recommend: If you smoke this within a short period of time (1-4 months) this is just fine and a wonderful Burley Cake that lacks competition in Germany imho.... but sadly this 'flaw', the loss/dramatically change of aroma/flavors foreces me to downrate..

Very compactly pressed plug with a nice structure of dark brown, almost black to golden brown leafs. Cold smell is sour and earthy with smoky tobacco notes but moderate over all.

I've cut it into cubes, I've cut and ripped off the layers and I've cut whole flakes off it to try different packing and it all worked very well. Needs a few relights when large pieces are packed and burns very slow.

Taste is of pure unscented tobaccos, wooden acidity, mossy with full earthy body; piquancy and hints of citrus and sweet plum or raisins. I'm kind of missing some more of that typical VA sweetness in there, sadly as it would make the smoke even more well-rounded.

All in all this plug contains well matured tobaccos with a rather dark wooden character. For me, it's not suitable for any situation and a glass of wine should be served as well. Moderate pricing makes it a recommendable tobacco for sure.
