No. 13's components remind of No.4 from Kontor. Only difference is that No. 13 has DARK FIRED Kentucky, instead of simple Kentucky - and you notice that in the smoke! At first I was concerned, if this would taste the same as No. 4, and they both have the same "core" taste-wise, yet No. 13 is more full-bodied, more tangy-spicy.
The ready rubbed mixture comes in flawless condition but you want to dry it out for at least 30 mins as it's more on the moist side. After that packing, lighting and keeping lit are no problems at all and it needs average relights, while burning cool, slow and steady to the bottom.
The unburnt scent is very inconspicious and mild. Slight fruitiness, a whiff of sweetness, a tad woody-smoke, that's it. But again - the more mild a tobacco smell, the more natural it will most certainly taste! That's my experience at least.
This mixture has a full-bodied character and is very satisfying for anyone looking for a blend that's on the upper half of medium-strenght. On first light I instantly perceive a pleasing, yet rather mild smokiness from the dark fired Kentucky, before the very fruity, slighly sour Perique kicks in to offer flavours reminiscent of tangerines, figs and apricot. Periques genuine peppery spice boosts the woody-tanginess of the dark fired Kentucky to a point where it can be considered "full-bodied" tastewise. A slightly toasted/fermented quality is also there. The Dark Fired Kentucky also adds a bit of earth that's set in the back. The dark Virginias are adding a mild sweetness, which harmonizes well with Periques fruit-notes, slight citrus-notes and helps balancing/harmonizing the power of the Dark Fired & Perique.
I'm hestitating to say No. 13 is better than No. 4, as I think it's just personal preference. No. 13 being the darker, spicier version and No. 4 being the more mild one with more fermented-/stoved-fruits qualities one. Both are high-quality blends, that don't have to fear a comparison to similar blends like Scottish Cake or Old Gowrie.
Highly recommended for anyone, who likes a full-bodied, tangy and spicy Va/Per with some noticeable Dark Fired Kentucky in it. Also a fine change of pace for Kentucky fans, who look for a more mild filler for their daily rotation. Lovers of Scottish Cake or Old Gowrie will also love this blend!
