I got aware of "Vogel's Tabakstube" (Tabakstube = tobacco barrack room), when a fellow pipe smokers recommended me "Massimo" as a "natural, Burley forward blend". Further more he said "Massimo is the definition of a good Burley blend" ! So I diddn't hestitate and ordered it as a sample to try it out, as I like Burleys from any sort.
Massimo's (=italian for the Maxium/ultimate/utmost) the apperance is appetizing and intensly brown, with brighter spots to it. The smell from the sample-baggie isn't that much Burley forward. It has a underlying sourness, just a whiff of sugary-sweetness, as well as nutty scent. Decent spice is already lurking in the smell of the backy.
Handling the tobacco is a joy. Ribbons, mixed with ready-rubbed pices. Comes rather moist and needs 30-60 minutes of drying. Some may prefer ever longer drying times.
Lighting Massimo up reveals it's genuine, very tobacco-ey taste. A gentle, almost Oriental-ish sourness is present throughout the whole smoke and the first thing I notice when lighting the bowl. You definetly notice the Perique in this mixture, with it's slightly peppery spice that also shares hints of (sour-)fruits. Kentucky adds body to the blend, as well as offering decent spice and forms together with rich and intense nutty, molasses Burley the core of the flavour-profile. Earthy- and woody notes are lurking and come through by times. A honey-ish sweetness helps balancing the power of this tobacco. It's not overwhelmingly strong, but more on the strong than the medium side.
A top-notch Burley-forward blend! Even tho the smell from the sample-bag diddn't hint towards it having such a rich and intense Burley and Kentucky flavour, but once under fire Massimo shows it's feral nature. The name is really suitable, as it has a fiery character with intense flavours.
No artificial flavouring I could find in this blend - very natural and tobacco-ey taste!
I have to agree to my fellow pipe smoker who recommended me this one - this is a true Burley-forward blend, that's far from being monotonous or boring. It has enough depth and so much character....This one sets the standard for Burley-blends to me! Wow, where has this blend been all my pipe-smoking-life?
4/4 stars, and it really deserves every one of them! A must-try for anyone who likes Burley-forward blends, or anyone whom prefer a full-bodied tobacco with intense flavours, but no artificial flavourings added.
