Peterson - 2017 Special Reserve.

As you can see from the picture on here it's supplied in the standard Peterson Ltd. edition tin, which is always a good start as where there's usually a strong seal instead it uses a push-clip fastener, thusly allowing some breathing. The blend looks a lot more like a mixture than a straight ribbon, there's more than one piece of flake in there. The black cavendish accounts for only about 20% of the blend, the majority's medium, and light brown pieces.

The smoking: it isn't the slowest burning of blends, so fast puffers may be a bit disappointed! But with a more tentative technique it's a cracking smoke. Where the aromatics are concerned I get lots more caramel than vanilla. It isn't too heavily added, but nor is it too light: medium to strong. It never seems clumsy; just sweet and tasty. I get a dominance of burley at first, but after a short while it becomes an even amount of burley to Virginia, the black cav always comes last. Although the burn can be a touch fervent, the consistency of it's flawless; a light, sit back, and relax smoke.

Room-note: very pleasant. Nicotine: mild.

I'll happily highly recommend 2017 Special Reserve:

Four stars.

Smell: Very strong pleasant aroma. Greeted by a wonderful scent of caramel & a mild hint of vanilla.

Moisture content: Decent amount. No need to let it dry before smoking.

Pipe packing: Easy to pack. Just pick it and stuff in your pipe as you like.

Lighting: No relighting required.

Taste: A strong yet pleasant taste of caramel and vanilla but it doesnt kill the original flavour of the tobacco. Nicely mixed. It is a luxurios blend. A soft smooth smoke and i like it very much.

Tongue bite: None

Ash: White - grey

Room note: Nice room note. No problem for indoor smoking.

Re-purchase: Yes

Daily smoking: Yes

This is a weird one for me, but something I was really looking forward to. I enjoy a good aromatic from time to time and I have liked the other Peterson offerings so far, so I had pretty high hopes for this.

The smell out of the tin is pretty incredible. You can get the caramel and vanilla right off the bat. These two also translate into the actual smoke, but they are in the background - they never take a front seat. Which means you can taste the actual tobacco. The smell reminds me a lot of Mac Baren's Vanilla Cream. Even the texture of the tobacco with some broken flakes thrown in there, is very, very similar.

It's an enjoyable and relaxing smoke for when I'm in the mood for an aromatic, which honestly, isn't that often. But top notch tobaccos were used here, and the casing isn't offensive at all.

I must mention that this didn't play well with any of my briar's, though. I kept getting this offensive floral note for some reason, and I never smoke Lakeland blends. Corncob and meerschaum all the way for this blend.

Quite good.

Peterson’s Special Reserve LTD 2017

This 100gr tin arrived from a good friend ... I’ve recently been enjoying it ... it is a ribbon cut aromatic that offers a sumptuous aroma & consistent flavour. The VA & Burleys are always present & the black Cavendish is never masked by the additives... I get a Carmel & vanilla taste... has a mild N effect and arrived w/no drying necessary. It smokes rather quickly so I ‘siped’ the smoke; had no bite. If you can find it... try it. As one who enjoyes The Gwaith Hogarth Lakeland blends this is an Aro I really enjoy.
